Hiking Through the Tuscan Apennines: Abetone Mountain Hiking through the Tuscan Apennines: Abetone Mountain Enjoy a full day hiking in the Gomito Mountains region. Begin in Abetone, a municipality in the Province of Pistoia located about 80 kilometers (50 mi) northwest of Florence and about 49 kilometers (30 mi) northwest of Pistoia. Located at 1388m., it is the most famous ski destination in central Italy, thanks to its 50 km of ski slopes and trails on Monte Gomito, Monte Cimone and Libro Aperto, which attract mountain hikers and cyclists that use the chair lifts. From the Gomito Mountain we will board the cableway and reach Monte Dente della Vecchia and two famous glacial lakes of the Apennines, Lago Nero and Lago Piatto. Located at 1730m, Lago Nero is surrounded by the imposing Apennine mountains which reach 2000m and owes its name to the gloomy reflection emanating from its waters. The Lago Piatto is a small lake of glacial origin located at an altitude of 1823 meters. In its clear waters the peak of the Alpe delle Tre Potenze is reflected. There are no permanent fish in the lakes, but there are two species of newts, protected amphibians: the alpine and the crested. Around the lake you can see marmots and the golden eagle as well as the partridge and the buzzard. Among the flora are blueberry, the raspberry, the mountain pine, a variety of garlic, juniper, mountain pine, the mezzereo and the beech. After exploring the lakes we will make our way back to the cableway, enjoy a typical Tuscan lunch at a local restaurant and then transfer back to Montecatini Terme arriving in the evening. ● Take a cableway ride to reach two famous glacial lakes, Lago Nero and Lago Piatto ● Enjoy lunch in a local restaurant ● Explore the flora, fauna and search for the golden eagle which calls these mountains home Schedule: 07:00: Depart from Teatro Verdi in Montecatini Terme and transfer to the ski village of Abetone 09:30: Arrive to Abetone and take the cableway 10:00: Begin trekking around the two lakes 14:00: Return to the cableway and enjoy lunch at a local restaurant 16:00: Transfer back to Montecatini Terme 18:00: Arrive to Montecatini Terme Map of Itinerary Difficulty: (2) Easy active (i.e., Beginner level, physical activity; ~2-4 hours activity/day) ● Length: 7 kms/4.3 miles total ● Total difference in elevation is 400 mt. for the one way and 400 mt. for the return ● Total travel time: 4 hours ● Please note, this itinerary reaches moderate elevation ● Please note, this itinerary includes a transfer by cableway and may not be suitable for delegates with vertigo (climbs vertically 700m /2296 feet in only 7 minutes) Inclusions: ● English speaking tour leader / trekking guide ● Lunch (local restaurant) ● Bus Transfer Montecatini – Abetone and back Not Included: ● Gratuities (guide/driver) ● Personal items such as souvenirs ● Anything not explicitly included in the tour What to Wear/What to Bring: ● T-shirt ● Comfortable athletic pants or shorts ● Hiking boots ● Hat or cap ● Scarf ● Sunblock with high SPF ● Camera ● Light windproof jacket or sweater ● Rain jacket ● Polarized Sunglasses ● In addition, we highly recommend bringing a small backpack to carry your water bottle (at least 2 liters), sunscreen, snacks, etc. ● Trekking poles (optional) Cost: ● 60,00 per person € Group Size: 10 - 20 Contact Information: [email protected] .

  • The Impacts in Real Estate of Landscape Values: Evidence from Tuscany (Italy)
sustainability Article The Impacts in Real Estate of Landscape Values: Evidence from Tuscany (Italy) Francesco Riccioli 1,* , Roberto Fratini 2 and Fabio Boncinelli 2 1 Department of Veterinary Science—Rural Economics Section, University of Pisa, 56124 Pisa, Italy 2 Department of Agriculture, Food, Environment and Forestry, University of Florence, 50144 Firenze, Italy; roberto.fratini@unifi.it (R.F.); fabio.boncinelli@unifi.it (F.B.) * Correspondence: [email protected] Abstract: Using spatial econometric techniques and local spatial statistics, this study explores the relationships between the real estate values in Tuscany with the individual perception of satisfaction by landscape types. The analysis includes the usual territorial variables such as proximity to urban centres and roads. The landscape values are measured through a sample of respondents who expressed their aesthetic-visual perceptions of different types of land use. Results from a multivariate local Geary highlight that house prices are not spatial independent and that between the variables included in the analysis there is mainly a positive correlation. Specifically, the findings demonstrate a significant spatial dependence in real estate prices. The aesthetic values influence the real estate price throughout more a spatial indirect effect rather than the direct effect. Practically, house prices in specific areas are more influenced by aspects such as proximity to essential services. The results seem to show to live close to highly aesthetic environments not in these environments. The results relating to the distance from the main roads, however, seem counterintuitive. This result probably depends on the evidence that these areas suffer from greater traffic jam or pollution or they are preferred for alternative uses such as for locating industrial plants or big shopping centres rather than residential Citation: Riccioli, F.; Fratini, R.; use.

  • The Northern League in the 'Red Belt' of Italy
Bulletin of Italian Politics Vol. 4, No. 2, 2012, 277-294 The Northern League in the ‘Red Belt’ of Italy Giovanni Barbieri University of Perugia Abstract: In recent years the Northern League has begun to acquire growing support in the regions of Central Italy (the so-called Red Belt). With the principle objective of clarifying the reasons for the League’s expansion here, an investigation was undertaken to assess the hypothesis that growing concern generated by the phenomenon of immigration, as well as the inability of the red sub-culture to supply adequate responses to the demands of the peripheral territory, have given the League greater chances for success. In this way I proceed to a quantitative analysis aimed at reconstructing the electoral evolution of the League and at identifying its strongholds within the Red Belt; the analysis is enriched by in-depth interviews with national and provincial secretaries from the party. Results confirm the hypothesis and highlight the importance of a third aspect: the League’s constant effort to put down territorial roots. Keywords: Northern League, Red Belt, ethno-regionalist parties, political sub- culture Since the end of the 1980s, ethno-regionalist parties, among which, with the necessary care, one can also include the Northern League, have acquired a position of particular importance throughout Europe, achieving in many cases extraordinary election results. Examples include the recent successes of the Nieuw-Vlaamse Alliantie in Belgium, of the Scottish National Party in the United Kingdom and of the League itself in Italy. Various factors have contributed to this success: growing disaffection towards the current élite and the traditional political parties; new migratory flows towards the European continent; the European integration process, experienced, in many regions, as a threat to the realisation of greater autonomy, etc (De Winter and Türsan, 1998; Gómez-Reino Cachafeiro, 2002; De Winter et al., 2006).
