Section five of this act, A.RS. 41-1352, directs the Commission to: * Advise the legislature and state agencies on historic preservation matters; * Recommend measures to the legislature and state agencies to coordinate or improve the effectiveness of historic preservation activities of state agencies and agencies of the political subdivisions of this State and other persons involved in historic preservation; * Advise the legislature and state agencies on dissemination of information about historic preservation activities; * Encourage, in cooperation with appropriate public and private agencies and other persons, historic preservation training and education; * Submit a report to the Governor and the legislature annually. The report must include the performance of state agencies in their historic preservation activities; * Maintain an Historic Sites Review Committee as mandated by State and National Historic Preservation Acts that is appointed by the State Historic Preservation Officer to provide advice and to review nominations to State and National Registers. Membership on the Arizona Historical Advisory Commission can vary from ten to not more than twenty persons who have expertise in historic preservation, the disciplines of history, architecture, and archaeology; also librarians, archivists, and others involved in interpretation, research, writing, or teaching of the State's heritage. Ex-officio commissioners include the Directors of the Arizona Historical Society, the State Museum, and the State Parks and the State Historic Preservation Officer. The Director of the Department of Library, Archives and Public Records appoints other members of the Commission for staggered, three-year terms. 1 In addition to the mandated Historic Sites Review Committee, the Commission also maintains a standing committee on historic markers. The AHAC Chair appoints this Committee to review and approve the text on commemorative markers for historic sites that is submitted through local historical agencies to either the Arizona Historical Society or the Arizona Department of Transportation historic markers programs. Committees on Historic Sites and Historic Markers continued to function and our regular meetings provided an opportunity for those involved in historic preservation to coordinate programs and compare notes on historical and archaeological activities around the state. In 1987 /1988 a major effort to establish goals and objectives produced an excellent report and resulted in establishment of a new Standing Committee on Goals and Objectives. This new committee report will be included in the standing committee section in future reports, but will
