A June 2019 Dear NEW YORK-PENN LEAGUE Fans: The 2019 season is the 81st consecutive year of the NEW YORK-PENN LEAGUE – the oldest, continuously-operated CLASS A® league in professional baseball. During the 2018 season, the Mahoning Valley Scrappers (a Cleveland Indians affiliate) fought hard to win the NEW YORK-PENN LEAGUE’s PINCKNEY DIVISION with a record of 42-33 (a .560 winning percentage) and slipped past second place Auburn Doubledays (a Washington Nationals affiliate), which earned the wild card spot in the playoffs with a 41-35 record (a .539 winning percentage). The Hudson Valley Renegades (a Tampa Bay Rays affiliate) seized the McNAMARA DIVISION title with a League-best 45-30 record (a .600 winning percentage) and the Tri-City ValleyCats (a Houston Astros affiliate) topped the STEDLER DIVISION with a 42-33 record (a .560 winning percentage). The Renegades, which claimed the 2017 NEW YORK-PENN LEAGUE championship, was seeking its 3rd championship in 6 years. In the semi-finals, the Renegades and ValleyCats swept the Doubledays and Scrappers in two games. The final championship ending was exciting. In the top of the 12th inning, ValleyCat’s Alex Holderback hit a two-run game winning RBI single to take the lead 4-2. In the top of the 12th, ValleyCat’s relief pitcher Jacob Billingsley held off a bases-loaded Renegade rally to earn a save and to win the 2018 NEW YORK-PENN LEAGUE championship for the Tri-City ValleyCats. The Staten Island Yankees (a New York Yankees affiliate) will host the 2019 NEW YORK-PENN LEAGUE All-Star Game at Richmond County Bank Ballpark (Staten Island, NY) on Wednesday, August 20th. The NYPL Scholarship Program is open to any graduating senior from a public or private high school within the league’s footprint, who has been accepted at any two or four-year college or university, vocational or technical education institution. Applicants will be judged based on academic performance, volunteer and extracurricular activities, and the impact their local NYPL club and Minor League Baseball has had on their lives. The Scholarship Program consists of two stages - a local round and the league round. Students apply directly to their local NYPL team in the local round and one applicant is chosen by each of the 14 clubs to advance to the league round. The 14 local winners compete for three $2,500 scholarships and the other eleven local winners receive $250 each for books. “The New York-Penn League Charitable Foundation initiated the scholarship program in 2009 as a way to assist high school seniors from within our league’s footprint who not only meet and exceed traditional scholarship criteria, but have also demonstrated the positive benefits their local NYPL club has had on their life,” said Ben J. Hayes, President of the New York-Penn League. “The Foundation is pleased to have this scholarship program in place and to support our 14 member clubs in their year-round community outreach efforts.” Students must have a 3.0 GPA (on a 4.0 scale) and participate in extracirricular activities. Applicants should also be involved with community service and must provide letters of recommendation, a copy of their high school transcript, and letter of acceptance to the college or university that they will attend.
