But, as the organisation continues to grow, can it maintain the necessary process and production efficiencies to remain competitive? This has been the main task of the four members of the newly strengthened Executive Board – Chief Executive Officer René Berkvens, Chief Commercial Officer Arnout Damen, Chief Financial Officer Frank Eggink and Chief Products Officer Jan-Wim Dekker. Here, they share their views about Damen’s performance and its future. 10 Q. We will continue our research into ship motion and fuel efficiency, which reduces operating costs as well as helping the environment. Seeing our first hybrid ASD tug at work proves the benefits of our R&D programme, and this year we’re delivering the first Damen air lubrication system on a new Damen vessel. Jan-Wim: The fact remains that many sustainability solutions are still on the edge of economically viable operation, largely depending on the exact operational profile. You can develop great fuel-saving technologies, but if they cost more than you can ever save on fuel, then you’re not really reducing the Total Cost of Ownership. This is the biggest challenge we face in these types of innovation projects. Q. What are your main priorities as you develop the Damen organisation? The azure sky with slight traces of pure white from thin clouds and the matching white foam and white sails with a touch of pale blue contrast with the dark, but vibrant blue waves. The ship, Ariel does not seem to plough through the waves so much as conquer them through 2 sleek cuts, while her billowing sails soar like clouds. The scene gives a feeling of optimism, even exuberance: clippers often did that. They were loved by owners, passengers and crews, by those who depicted them, artists, photographers and writers, even tattooists and their customers; everybody had obvious reasons. They epitomise the age of sail, but their peak years only came to two decades, 1849 to 1869. The years of their emergence and decline came to several decades. Their essential hull design was first used in Chesapeake Bay late in the eighteenth century, but these were smaller ships, closer to schooners than the later larger great clippers of the late 1830s and after. In both their sleek hull design, their narrow cutting bow, the outlay of their sails and their size they had much in common with schooners. There were strong and obvious differences: schooners were much smaller and usually had only two masts which were not even half the height of those on clippers. Schooner sails were smaller and fewer in number, and were positioned parallel to the hull, not crossways to it, as on clippers These early clippers would take part in military operations in the American Revolution and the War of 1812, sometimes as privateers, more often as smugglers and messengers.1 In peacetime they would be involved in Chesapeake trade and transportation.

Dans notre ville, la voile et les sports nautiques sont pratiqués avec passion à tous les âges et sur un plan d’eau exceptionnel. Les Grandes Voiles du Havre sont une occasion unique de célébrer cette identité maritime forte qui caractérise notre ville depuis sa création par François Ier en 1517. C’est aussi une grande fête pour la jeunesse originaire d’une trentaine de pays différents et pour les 60 jeunes de notre agglomération engagés dans cette course de grands voiliers. Plus que jamais, les Havrais auront à cœur de montrer leur sens de l’accueil, notamment nos associations maritimes et les 500 bénévoles qui répondent présents pour recevoir les 1 200 membres d’équipage et les milliers de visiteurs attendus sur les quais. Que cette fête soit belle, qu’elle montre à quel point Le Havre est une ville ouverte sur le monde et déterminée à regarder vers l’avenir avec enthousiasme. Nr 3/2018 KAPTEN HAR ORDET Rydbergsgastar! Sverige kan vara stolt över det stora antalet segelfartyg. Under vinterhalvåret är det lättast att studera dem vid kaj för på sommarhalvåret seglar de! Briggen Tre Kronor af Stockholm, Shamrock, 3-mastskonaren Vega, Constan- tia med fler finns i Stockholmstrakten. På västkusten har barken Gunilla, Svenska Kryssarklubbens Atlantica, Gratia och Gratitude och fler därtill. Alla har det gemensamma att vara traditionsbärare och utbildar oftast ung- domar. Gladan och Falken, inte att förglömma, som kombinerar utbildning av marina elever med elever från sjömansskolor. I år återvände vi till briggen Tre Kronor af Stockholm vid Kolkajen på Kastellholmen för Årsmönstringen. Brig- gen var nyrustad inför seglingssäsongen och var ”Ship shape and Bristol fashion” när Rydbergsflaggan hissades. Gastarna gjorde uppställning runt storluckan med våra gäster på kajen som åhörare och medsjungande i visorna. Sölve Larsby och Ragnar Westblad dekorerades med Jubelgastmärket med fanfarer av Flottans Musikkårs Kam- ratförening i Stockholm. Årsmötet hölls i Kolskjulet innan vi samlades ombord för den sedvanliga lunchen.
