The Class of 2019 during their Passing Out Parade on 14th December 2019. Editor’s Note

It’s the year 2020, the visionary year where we embark into the new decade as a united country, a society with a liberated spirit, a just and democratic society, a morally ethical society, and above all a prosperous society. In this issue of Bulletin OPA (BOPA), we wish to focus on the key vision and that is UNITY. In this issue, we cover cross cultural festivities, gatherings and celebrations all in the spirit of brotherhood. Likewise, we highlight various OPA activities, updates as well as information related to RMC and OPA in the past year or so to our dear readers. We also feature a spread on our signature event The OPA Annual Dinner that was held in July 2019 and a column on OP of The Year, OP Tan Sri Mohamad Ariff, Speaker of Dewan Rakyat. Old Puteras also contributed their articles in this issue. They include our former OPA President OP Salleh Mohd Nor who writes on an unfortunate incident where he fractured his ankle and the journey towards recovery. OP Dr. Raja Shaharul shares his expertise on the importance of individualised health screening. OP Nawawi Mat Desa wrote on a historic gathering of 93 Budak Boys from intakes 1952 till 1961 at the old FMC camp in Port Dickson. OP Nawawi also wrote a piece on OP Bhajan’s Book Launch event at the Penthouse. OP Bhajan’s autobiography “Lucky By Chance” may be purchased from the OPA secretariat. Moreover, this issue also features the continuous humanity agenda run by a few of our OP brothers, the Food For Gelandangan (FFG) voluntary association. Funds are wholly donated by the public and they welcome volunteers and contributions. Finally my heartfelt appreciation goes to the president of OPA, OP Baha and the rest of my colleagues in the EXCO line-up as well as other OPs for their effort, advices, commitment and dedication in making this BOPA Magazine a real success. My thanks also to the team in Amanie Media and the Malaysian Business for their professional support. Happy Reading and Happy New Year Everyone!

Yours Truly,

Engagement with kids facing such organisations or individuals that do similar FFG has also taken the initiative to engage with kids of the charitable work like us. We are always careful and sensitive to urban poor. There has been story book distribution and the fact that with all the kindest intentions in the world, such reading sessions, the giving of new clothes and footwear, actions do give to problems like wastage due to irresponsible especially during the major festive seasons. food donations or excessive clothes donated resulting in them being not properly discarded. We find that our ‘walk and reach out’ approach to be a good ‘modus operandi’ in order to ensure help gets to those who need them most without contributing to the negative stigma associated with charitable deeds such as these. We welcome collaboration with any parties to improve our work and also in the long term to get these people of the streets. We work on a totally voluntary basis and our funds are donated wholly by the public.

Our ultimate goal is to help people end their homelessness.... InsyaAllah one day!!

In recognition for their ever generous contributions, OP Mohd Radzi then presented the book to the eleven Budak Boy who were major contributors for the visit, led by OP Ismail bin Ibrahim (B Coy; 1957-1960). After all the formalities in the Assembly Hall were over, those present moved to the classroom block for the group photo session. The photo session was followed by lunch at the Dining Hall. It was a sumptuous lunch indeed ala “nasi briyani” menu. Yes, those present, less a few fortunate ones had to line up to get their food, like the good old days when they were in the same dining hall, some 58 to 66 years ago. In addition to the “nasi briyani”, there were the roasted lambs. Also made available was the Army “compo ration”, but not as tasty as it used to be - maybe we have lost our taste after all these years. For dessert, there was the “ABC” and the famous “Cendol” from Teluk Kemang; and to top them all, the king of fruits “durian” galore, brought all the way from Kuala Kurau, . Good to see, how the old Budak Boys really enjoyed the “durian” on that afternoon. During the lunch, those present collected a copy of the Due to the continued rain, the trip to Teluk Kemang / book earlier launched, together with a copy of the “FMC Port Segenting Camp had to be cancelled. It was indeed nostalgic to drive through the old Port Dickson town but it was no longer the old home town Port Dickson that we knew in the 1950’s. Both buses arrived back to their respective RV Points at 1800 hours, in spite of the rain and the heavy traffic. After the “nasi briyani” and the “durian”, almost all had a good two-hour sleep on the bus! All in all it was a successful and memorable visit, worth the time spent in lieu of having a day with the “cucus” at home or a round of golf at the golf course. A good number came, postponing or cancelling their other arrangements for the day. They came, they met and they parted, not knowing when they would ever meet each other again!

• Remember that block up the hill? That mass of concrete which to the normal person is just an array of buildings, rooms to inhabit and operate from? • But to us it means much more than that. It is more often than not a chest of priceless shared memories, it journals a slew of experiences and it holds indescribable meaning for all of us Old Puteras. • It was a place where we were congregated and inseminated with the principles we hold dear until today. A place where thousands of young boys turned and evolved into men. • For many of us today, we still hold dear the brotherhood and camaraderie of being Old Puteras, of having a common trait with many others of different ages, races and religions. Some of us pine and long for a place we can go to and call our Boys’ Adult Wing, a place for Old Puteras where everybody knows your name and you theirs. • Look no further as we do have such a space we can call home. The OPA building is an asset owned by our alma mater alumni association. • The 3-storey building includes the Penthouse where the OPA facilities and offices are located as well as a second floor and a ground floor which is currently rented out. • The penthouse houses top notch facilities including an equipped sound system to cater for events such as festivities, weddings as well as batch gatherings. • Feel free to have a sneak peek at the area and its packages by contacting the secretariat team. They’ll be more than happy to assist you and your value for money!
