The pro- duction was a dramatization of Elvis Presley’s life, featuring Kurt Rus- sell as Elvis. His unexpected death the year before had revived the public interest in ‘The King,’ and countless biographies invaded the market. The movie spawned several fictional and/or biographical films about po- pular culture icons, such as Buddy Holly (The Buddy Holly Story, 1978) and The Beatles (Birth of The Beatles, 1979). In the 1980s and 1990s, only a handful of pop biographies were successful at the box office, i. e.
