Zogby Poll Finds the Internet Today’S Most Trusted News Source
For Immediate Release ZOGBY POLL FINDS THE INTERNET TODAY’S MOST TRUSTED NEWS SOURCE Majority of Those Polled Trust FOX News Over Any Other Televised News Source Rush Limbaugh Leads in MostTrusted News Personality, Followed by Bill O’Reilly and Tom Brokaw 89% of Conservatives, 58% of Liberals Describe News Coverage as Biased NEW YORK, NY – November 20, 2008 – The Independent Film Channel (IFC) today disclosed the results of a newlycommissioned study conducted by Zogby International that gauges attitudes towards the American news media. The results of this study underscore the importance of understanding the truth behind the news, the mandate of IFC’s new original series, The IFC Media Project, which premieres Tuesday, November 18 at 8:00 p.m. The Zogby Interactive survey was conducted November 5 and 6, 2008. Results indicate that the Internet is the most trusted news source among all age groups, and overall, more trusted than newspapers and television news combined. FOX News is the most trusted news source on television and The New York Times is the most trusted national newspaper outlet. Three out of four people feel that news coverage is biased, and that media coverage influenced the outcome of the Presidential election. “What is interesting about these results is that they show a general distrust of the mainstream media among Americans,” said Jennifer Caserta, EVP and GM of IFC. “The IFC Media Project aims to tackle that very issue, helping people understand how inaccuracies and biases in news reporting have a great impact on our perception of what’s going on in the world.” Other Key Results: • Overall, 74.8% agree that media coverage of the Presidential election influenced the outcome. -

Media Partisanship and Bias in the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict
Partisanship and Bias 1 ` Running head: PARTISANSHIP AND BIAS Partisanship and Bias in the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict: A Comparative Study of Four International Media Outlets Nevet Basker University of Washington COM 497 (Honors Thesis), Department of Communication, November 2009 Partisanship and Bias 2 Abstract Partisans, sometimes exhibiting a ―hostile media‖ phenomenon (Vallone, Ross, & Lepper, 1985), often complain that media coverage is biased against their side in a conflict or dispute. Academic researchers, on the other hand, have struggled to identify empirically such bias. These studies often have focused on domestic political issues—typically, presidential elections (e.g., D'Alessio & Allen, 2000)—and compared actual coverage to an ―objective‖ balanced or even-handed treatment. In the area of international affairs, however, the ideal of ―objective‖ or ―even-handed‖ treatment is itself debatable, and ―balance‖ is not automatically desirable; partisans always see their side as ―right‖ and therefore justifying favorable coverage. This study compares coverage of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in four international media outlets—the New York Times, the Guardian (U.K.), the Jerusalem Post (Israel), and the English-language Web site of the pan-Arab cable TV network, Al Jazeera. A content analysis of a sample of 200 articles from each outlet over five years (2004-2008) demonstrated clear differences between the four outlets, while avoiding having to establish what would constitute a ―correct‖ or ―fair‖ treatment. The Jerusalem Post, clearly a partisan outlet, favored the Israeli side of the conflict, while AlJazeera.net presented a pro-Palestinian viewpoint. The New York Times treated each side approximately equally, while the Guardian sympathized with civilians on both the Israeli and Palestinian sides, and harshly condemned violence against civilians, regardless of the identity of the perpetrator or the circumstances. -

(December 2009) Andrea Schweikhard Robison, B.A., Texas A&M University Chair of Advisory Committee: Dr. Antonio La Pastina Project Runway premiered on Bravo TV on December 1st, 2004, and is now in its sixth season, which aired on Lifetime. On Project Runway, designer contestants live together in apartments in downtown New York for the duration of filming and work on weekly challenges at Parsons The New School for Design. I am interested in determining the ways in which reality shows like Project Runway both allow and restrict the display of gender and sexual identity for contestants through the construction of a social order. This study is a textual analysis of all five currently released seasons of Project Runway. I draw from theories of social interaction to provide the interpretive framework for this study. -
