It was responsible for its own recruitment, billeting, supplies and training, overseen by a National Executive Committee. The Corps was disbanded in 1925. Owen William Owen was secretary to the National Executive Committee, and he prepared a final report on the history of the Corps, on their behalf, in 1921. He later worked in the Ministry of Labour (Wales), retiring in 1928. He had previously undertaken gold prospecting in South Africa in the 1890s. Dallow SWB Commemorated on Celynen Collieries Roll of Honour Family James David Dallow was born in 1895, the son of Charles and Margaret Dallow. The 1901 Census show six year old James to be the second of four children - Annie E Dallow (7) was born a year before him and he had younger siblings William C Dallow (4) and Mary S M Dallow (2). Charles was originally from Hereford and Margaret from Crickhowell, all the children were born in Abercarn. In 1911 the family were living at 42 Celynen Terrace in Newbridge. Charles and his two sons were all working as coal hewers in a local colliery whilst Mary was still at school. The family appear to have had a further son, Thomas, although the Census shows him as having died. The family had a lodger called John Knight who also worked at the colliery but was a boiler stoker working above ground. Military James David Dallow enlisted in the army and was posted as Private 23247 to the 11th Battalion of the South Wales Borderers, part of the 115th Brigade of the 38th (Welsh) Division. In December 1915 the 38th (Welsh) Division embarked for France, the 11th Battalion arriving at Le Havre on 4th December 1915. The following is an extract from a factsheet issued by the South Wales Borderers Museum, Brecon After spells in the Line at Givenchy in the spring of 1916 the Division moved to the River Ancre on 3rd July at the opening of the Battle of the Somme, and both battalions had their first real action in the attack on Mametz Wood.

    Welsh Association of Youth Clubs THE MOBILE YOUTH UNIT 1977 – 1980 Dennis Frost THE MOBILE YOUTH UNIT Background In the mid 1970s the Welsh Association of Youth Clubs, (WAYC) one of the foremost voluntary youth organisations in Wales, had a membership of 34,000 young people in 340 affiliated youth clubs encompassing church and chapel groups, village clubs, independent clubs, and local education authority youth centres. Established in 1934, and an autonomous division of the then National Association of Youth Clubs (NAYC) the WAYC is perhaps best described as a facilitating body. Its wide range of services incorporated training courses for leaders, potential leaders, and senior youth club members, festivals and competitions, members’ councils at local, county and national level, adventurous pursuits, and insurance schemes. An innovative organisation, among its several enterprises was the introduction of clubs for Physically Handicapped and Able Bodied young people (PHAB). Conceivably its most valued contribution at the time, and in keeping with its original concepts, was the advice and assistance readily available from members of staff who regularly visited affiliated clubs. The concern of the WAYC for the dedicated men and women who freely gave their time in the service of young people is perhaps reflected in a statement made at a meeting of the Executive Council when it was suggested that a simplified version of its aims and objects might be, ‘to support the untiring, and sometimes unacknowledged endeavours of individual youth workers by helping reduce their sense of isolation, and hopefully make their task a little easier’. Whilst the stated aim of the WAYC (1976) was focused on young people – ‘to help boys and girls to develop their physical, mental and spiritual capacities that they may grow to full maturity as individuals and members of society’, the suggestion served to confirm an awareness of the needs of youth workers, particularly those in the rural areas.

He was born in 1930 in Cardiff, his father being a Pilot in the Bristol Channel, who represented the Pilots on the Cardiff Pilotage Authority, was a senior Mason and was active in the Baptist Church. Brian attended Marlborough Road School, where one of his masters was George Thomas, later Speaker of the House of Commons, and then Cardiff High School. He was brought up monolingual in English and though he learnt Welsh in later life, especially while at Lampeter, no writings in Welsh survive in the archive. He served his National Service with the Welch Regiment, based in Brecon and it was in Brecon Cathedral that his conversion to Anglicanism from his Baptist upbringing, begun as he accompanied his future wife to Church in Wales services, was completed. Anglicanism remained a constant part of his life: he became a Lay Reader when in Reading, was a passionate advocate of the Book of Common Prayer and a fierce critic of Series Three and the New English Bible, as epitomised in the book he edited in 1990, Ritual Murder .

The Lord Lieutenant is thus the chief executive authority in that county, through whom the policy decisions of the central government would be directed. Conversely he would represent the considerations of the county at Court and to the government. Because of these exalted duties the honour was usually given to the principal aristocratic landowner in the county. Deputy lieutenants would be appointed to carry out the directions given by him. The office also had the power to recommend, and so thus constitute, the Commission of the Peace, the body of justices of the peace or magistrates who supervised the legal and administrative systems of the county though the medium of their Quarter Sessions court. The Lord Lieutenant also had responsibility for local defence and accordingly controlled the county militia forces. This aspect of his work is dealt with in more detail in the second introduction. The collection catalogued below contains some of the working papers, mainly correspondence, of four successive Lord Lieutenants of Caernarvonshire and one future Lord Lieutenant as a Vice Lieutenant.
