Steering Through the Moral Fog Conclusion ONE The Consequences of Compromise A sophisticated college student was speaking to a missionary unmistakably identified by his proverbial pith helmet and shorts. Bewildered, the student asked, "But what do you do when you can't take the superstition and violence and immorality any longer?" "Simple," came the reply. "We get on a plane and go back to the mission field." Ouch! But every day the media shouts the message that we would rather not hear. The lights go out in a great city and an orgy of lawlessness results. The concrete canyons of our cities are filled with people living in fear, often barricaded within secure fortresses. A national magazine chronicles the awesome power of organized crime and follows it a few weeks later with the startling story of youthful crime and violence, carried out with a terrifying, cold eyed amorality. A major Canadian church issues a preliminary report which seriously considers putting to death severely retarded children, and a chief architect of the report suggests that such children are not genuine human beings. Homosexuality has become so widely accepted that one quarter of the population of a major American city is said to practice it, while biblical morality is ridiculed or dismissed as irrelevant by our most popular television programs. Divorce rates soar while the phenomenon of "living together" becomes standard operating procedure among a great part of the population. The list could be lengthened indefinitely. No serious observers can doubt that the Western world is experiencing an enormous moral crisis. Ours is a cut flower civilization. While a sign of life remains, we have cut ourselves off from our biblical roots, and the petals are beginning to droop and fall. It is not an exaggeration to say that we are a society without standards. The youthful rock star who told an interviewer, "I believe absolutely nothing," is, unfortunately, speaking for a good part of his generation. One thing seems obvious. There has never been a time like our time when God's people were overwhelmed by such a flood of immorality and amorality. It is perhaps more like a tidal wave than a flood, because it threatens to carry everything away before it, leaving only destruction in its wake. But is it really unprecedented? We do not minimize the present crisis by recognizing that significant parallels to our time are found in the past, and some of the most relevant are found in a neglected Old Testament book, the book of Judges. It is a part of Scripture which describes a time of moral, spiritual, and ethical anarchy, a society without standards whose life style is captured in a thoroughly modern phrase, found at the back door of the book: "Everyone did what was right in his own eyes" (Judg. 21:25). Judges is a book which speaks to our time because it presents us with living examples of people who served God in such a time and not only survived spiritually but flourished. At the same time, it presents us with people who did not survive, but who succumbed to the wave of sin. Judges vividly demonstrates to us the consequences of spiritual compromise and disobedience to God, as the world tries to squeeze believers into its mold. No other part of Scripture so emphatically declares that spiritual disaster occurs when a group of people draw back from a wholehearted commitment to the Lord Jesus. Our time is a dangerous and exciting one in which to serve the Lord Jesus Christ. The challenges and opportunities He has given to His Body in the last quarter of the twentieth century are unique and exhilarating. But Satan is on the march as well, and unless we grab hold of the great principles of spiritual living presented in the book of Judges, we may find ourselves to be spiritual dropouts, mere spectators at the climax of the invisible war between God and Satan. Judges begins by giving us a graphic reminder of the consequences of compromise and partial obedience in a time of spiritual anarchy. It is the fundamental principle that the Holy Spirit communicates about spiritual survival in a society without standards. Partial defense is no defense at all. As D. L. Moody once said, "The place for the ship is in the sea, but God help the ship if the sea gets into it!" When God's people begin to take on the water of the world, they go down fast, and in the opening verses of this great book we see that process vividly portrayed. AFTER THE DEATH OF JOSHUA - 1: 1 Now it came about after the death of Joshua that the sons of Israel inquired to the LORD, saying, "Who shall go up first for us against the Canaanites, to fight against them?" The first few words of the book of Judges may at first glance seem to be only a helpful historical notation. "After the death of Joshua," however, is a statement of drastic change in the spiritual health of the nation of Israel. Although the books of Joshua and Judges stand side by side on the pages of Scripture, they are poles apart in what they record of Israel's obedience to God. Joshua is the record of the exploits of Israel as they trusted their Lord and obeyed God. God brought His people into Canaan and gave them victory after victory over their foes. Joshua is a book of conquest, but Judges is a long, sad story of defeat. Joshua is a book of faith, Judges of unbelief and disobedience. Joshua depicts a people united in following God's man, but Judges is a book of division and anarchy, as every man "did what was right in his own eyes." In Joshua, God's Word is central and men submit to His authority, while in Judges, Scripture is neglected and rejected. There are two verses which clearly indicate the difference between the time of Joshua and the period of the Judges. As Joshua was about to die, he issued his famous challenge to the people to "choose this day whom you will serve." With one voice the people answered, "Far be it from us that we should forsake the LORD to serve other gods" (Josh. 24:16) . Under Joshua's leadership, there was a strong vocal commitment to the authority of the Lord in Israel. But early in Judges we have God's description of the time of the Judges: "And the sons of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the LORD, and forgot the LORD their God, and served the Baals and the Asheroth" (Judg. 3:7). In Joshua, "we will not forget the LORD." In Judges, "the people forgot the LORD." Why did that happen? How did a people who knew continuous victory by faith sink to be a nation experiencing constant failure due to compromise? And how can we guard against the same thing in our lives? We sing, Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it, Prone to leave the God I love. What happened in the time of Judges is sad, but it is not unique. Perhaps by seeing where the sons of Israel failed, we can guard against leaving the fount of blessing today. That is one important question the book of Judges answers, but it also confronts us on another level. This is not simply a dreary desert of defeat. There is failure, but there is also faith. Few other books give us such insight into the grace and long-suffering of our God. Side by side with compromise and apostasy runs the story of men and women who knew what it was to live for God by faith in difficult times. Many of the great heroes of faith enrolled in Hebrews 11 come from the book of Judges, and when their peers were being swallowed up by the temptations of the times, they were making a positive impact for their Lord. From a study of their successes and failures, and more significantly, from a recognition of God's gracious work in their lives, we can learn some great lessons of spiritual survival in a society without standards. We may be surprised to discover that the book of Judges covers about one-quarter of the historical period described in the Old Testament. About 300 to 350 years pass between Judges 1 and Judges 21, yet it remains one of the most neglected books in the Bible. Except for the stories of Gideon and Samson, most Christians know very little about the book, and even those stories are known only in the most superficial way. But to neglect it is to rob ourselves of significant truths the Holy Spirit wants to teach us. The outline of Judges is a very simple one, as the book falls naturally into three sections: THE PREVIEW OF THE JUDGES 1:1-3:6-The Cycle of Sin THE PERIOD OF THE JUDGES 3:7-16:3 1-The Downward Spiral THE PICTURE OF THE JUDGES 17:1-21:25-Spiritual Anarchy Who wrote Judges we are not told.

The fear of the other is mirrored in the stories we tell. Fantasy worlds allow the author to create a world separated from the real one, where we can meet new conceptions of the other. This thesis examines which others we encounter within the Watch sequence, part of the Discworld series by Terry Pratchett, answering the research question: What Others do we encounter in the Discworld series, and how does Terry Pratchett use humour and fantasy to interrogate our conceptions of the Other. The theoretical part will first discuss who the other is, and how she has been theorised, then define Fantasy as a genre, and explore why it is suitable for examining social questions. The theoretical part ends with an exploration of humour, including the types of humour used within the Discworld series. This thesis then analyses three different types of others that are encountered on the Discworld: the Racial Other, the Nonhuman Other, and the Dehumanised Other. Origins and Meaning of Some of the Recurrent Characters in Terry Pratchett’s Discworld ABSTRACT Nominative symbolism in fantasy is a tool to attribute certain traits to literary characters and thus to convey meaning which enriches the readers’ comprehension of the fictitious personality. Proper names in the English naming tradition are not generally seen as means of alluding to the character of a person, yet they have sometimes been chosen purposefully by writers so as to reveal the idea that a symbolic name tries to convey. The paper therefore aims at investigating the origin and author’s intended meaning behind the names of some recurrent literary characters in Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series from the viewpoint of their structure and the allusions they evoke in the reader’s imagination. The analysis includes five names presenting three different structures: neologisms based on syntactic composition, imitations of borrowed structures that are foreign to the English model of naming, and typical English naming models where name symbolism is due to the lexical choice of the components in the name. Samuel Vimes is the main protagonist of the Watch sub series of Pratchett’s Discworld book series. Vimes is the head of the police force, which is called the Watch, in Ankh-Morpork, the largest city on the Discworld. The first part of the essay examines Vimes’s character traits and personality, focusing on the three-part split in his personality and how it corresponds to the Freudian three part model of the psyche. The analysis of Vimes’s personality is an important foundation for further analysis in the essay as throughout the Watch series Vimes moves from being simply an alcoholic policeman in dented armor to being a respected and feared pillar of the community. The essay also deals with the beginning of Vimes’s growth as an established authority figure due to the recognition of his unique abilities when it comes to influencing and controlling Carrot Ironfoundersson, the secret heir to the throne of Ankh-Morpork and a fellow policeman.

    CHAPTER 5 DWARFS, HERMAPHRODITES, LOVERS: FANTASTIC SEX The preponderance of strong female leads in the novels of the three Fantasy authors under discussion (Pratchettʼs Angua, Granny Weatherwax and Tiffany Aching; Pullmanʼs Lyra Silvertongue and Marisa Coulter; Miévilleʼs Bellis Coldwine and Ann-Hari) is merely the tip of the iceberg of their interest in sexual politics; for these authors utilise the full Fantasy ʻarmouryʼ in their attempt to make us look at gender issues again. On the simplest level, they frequently map the domain of the (historical/ongoing) struggle for sexual equality onto their Fantasy worlds. In Pratchett, there is the struggle for equal opportunity in Equal Rites and the battle against gender stereotyping in the ʻdwarfen arcʼ;1 in Pullman, there is the combating of religiously justified patriarchy; in Miéville, there is the fight for sexual liberation that is one of the battlegrounds in Iron Council. And moved against a new background, the Pragmatikos, we can see, of course, these struggles in a new light... However, it is when these maps are combined with gender transformed by the power of the Allos that the deepest insight is gained. 'Sounds like someone wants to get rid of it in a hurry . .' GOLEM MUST WORK. GOLEM MUST HAVE A MASTER. 'Yeah, right, but you hear stories . Going mad and making too many things, and that.' NOT MAD. EIGHTY DOLLARS. 'It looks . new,' said the man, tapping the gleaming chest.
