Fantasy Fiction Field
E4NTASW FICTION HELD Founded by Julius Unger Volume 1 ... BI-WEEKLY ... Number 12 June 18, 1963 The National Fantasy Review Whole Number 12 PALMER, SHAVER in Pornography Probe The Milwaukee area recently had itself a real l'who-done-it’* mystery. In the confusion the finger of suspicion was pointed at former AMAZING STORIES editor Raymond A. Palmer and ''Shaver Mystery" author Richard S, Shaver. Seems the whole thing developed as a result of Cleveland * Amory's article in SATURDAY EVENING POST on the subject of pornography, _ wherein Freedom Publishing Company was cited as "the worst of the worst" among the paperback companies peddling alleged pornography. Amory listed the publisher’s address as Milwaukee, which put the Milwau kee County District Attorney in the position of having to do some inves tigating. THE MILWAUKEE JOURNAL, who gave the story several days of feature coverage, said the DA received a complaint about the books from a New York Roman Catholic priest. As the mystery unfolded, it was discovered that the address the company listed was actually that of a Milwaukee attorney who said he did some legal work for them and used his office as an address for service of papers, as the law requires an address for that purpose for corpora tions. He said he had earlier resigned, and another lawyer had taken over his functions. This attorney said all he did was handle financial statements and foreward mail to the man he said was the-firm's presi dent, Richard Shaver, who lives in Lanark, near Amherst, Wisconsin. -

There Are Various Ways of Sourcing Books to Read During the Lockdown
There are various ways of sourcing books to read during the lockdown. You may have borrowed a lot from the school library, or may have lots at home. I’ve listed a selection of suggested good reads: some brand new, some classics, some long, some short. I hope there will be a good selection, with something for everyone. I’ll send five more each week. Next to each book, I have shown its price on Amazon. Any classics should be able to be downloaded on to a Kindle App for free. It is possible to join Buckinghamshire Libraries from home: https://buckinghamshire.spydus.co.uk/cgi-bin/spydus.exe/MSGTRN/WPAC/JOIN from which you can download books using the Libby App: https://www.overdrive.com/apps/libby/?utm_origin=lightning&utm_page_genre=tout&u tm_list=meet_libby&utm_content=libby_tout_learnmore_06019018 This is another good way of accessing books for free. Very few things are held sacred in this twisted, corrupt, heartless—and oddly familiar— universe, but the Hogfather is one of them. Yet here it is, Hogswatchnight, that most joyous and acquisitive of times, and the jolly, old, red-suited gift-giver has vanished without a trace. And theres something shady going on involving an uncommonly psychotic member of the Assassins Guild and certain representatives of Ankh-Morporks rather extensive criminal element. Suddenly Discworlds entire myth system is unraveling at an alarming rate. Drastic measures must be taken, which is why Death himself is taking up the reins of the fat mans vacated sleigh . which, in turn, has Deaths level-headed granddaughter, Susan, racing to unravel the nasty, humbuggian mess before the holiday season goes straight to hell and takes everyone along with it. Terry Pratchett was brilliant and the master of a fantasy sub-genre that probably belongs to him alone. Mort is a novel set in Discworld. The Discworld novels fall into different categories: Tiffany Aching, Rincewind, the three witches, Sam Vines and the guards, and Death. -

The Virtue of the Stereotypical Antagonist in Terry Pratchett's
BY THE STRENGTH OF THEIR ENEMIES: THE VIRTUE OF THE STEREOTYPICAL ANTAGONIST IN TERRY PRATCHETT’S ‘WITCHES’ NOVELS BY CATHERINE M. D. JOULE A thesis submitted to the Victoria University of Wellington in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Victoria University of Wellington (2021) 1 2 Abstract The comic fantasy Discworld novels of Terry Pratchett (1948-2015) are marked by their clear and insightful approaches to complex ethical issues. This has been noted in academic approaches from the beginning, with Farah Mendlesohn’s chapter “Faith and Ethics” appearing in the early collection Terry Pratchett: Guilty of Literature (2000) and many others since touching on the issues Pratchett raises. However, this thesis’s investigation into the use of stereotypes in characterisation and development of the antagonist figures within the Discworld novels breaks new ground in mapping the course of Pratchett’s approaches across six Discworld novels. This argument will focus on the ‘Witches’ sequence of novels: Equal Rites (1987), Wyrd Sisters (1988), Witches Abroad (1991), Lords and Ladies (1992), Maskerade (1995), and Carpe Jugulum (1998). Unlike other sequences in the Discworld series, these novels have a strong metatextual focus on the structural components of narrative. In this context, stereotypes facilitate both the humour and the moral arguments of these novels. Signifiers of stereotypes invoke expectations which are as often thwarted as they are fulfilled and, while resulting in humour, this process also reflects on the place of the individual within the community, the nature of right and wrong, and how we as people control the narratives which define our lives and ourselves. -
