Million Word Challenge This year, all students are participating in the Million Word Challenge, a reading campaign that promotes a culture of literacy at school and at home. The campaign encourages students to read ONE MILLION WORDS, inside and outside of school. Progress toward the goals will be monitored quarterly. The 1st quarter incentive for students that meet their quarterly book goal is a Books and BBQ picnic on November 13th (Grades K-2) and 14th (Grades 3-5)! Parents, help your child reach their goal by having them read 20 minutes every night and log the books they read. See your child’s teacher for a breakdown of quarterly goals.
Math Fluency Challenge In addition to our reading challenge, all students are participating in the PFOSTA math fluency challenge! Math fact fluency is the ability to recall the answers to basic math facts automatically and without hesitation. Fact fluency is gained through significant practice. Without the ability to retrieve facts directly or automatically, students are likely to experience frustration as they perform a range of complex math tasks. Accurate and efficient retrieval of basic math facts is critical to a student’s success in mathematics. More information regarding the grade-level math fluency benchmarks by quarter will be sent home by your child’s math teacher!
