ABSTRACT The use of insect design in the art of philately is analyzed from 80 postage stamps that are to be found in the Ethnobiology Laboratory Collection at Feira de Santana State University. These stamps come from 12 countries and insect species represented on them are distributed in seven taxonomic orders. Lepidoptera and Coleoptera are the two must represented orders with philatelic designs. The former contributes with 51 postage stamps, which are classified in 10 families and 46 identified species. The latter shows up with 17 postage stamps, which are classified in 8 families and 16 identified species. Through this entomophilatelic art Post Offices develop an environmental education by arousing in the public a liking for the study of entomology, as well as to make the presence of insects and other invertebrates more acceptable in daily life.

  • Insetti Incontrano Uomini La Collezione Entomologica Di Pietro Castellano

München, downloadISSN 0171-0079unter www.zobodat.at An annotated check-list of Ecuadorian Papilionidae (Lepidoptera, Papilionidae) by TOMMASO RACHELI & LORRAINE PARISET received 18.111.1992 Abstract: An up-to-date list of ecuadorian Papilionidae is given. Informations from litera ture, examination of specimens in museums or private collections, as well as brief field- notes on the eco-ethology of the species under consideration are presented. Introduction Ecuador, comparatively to its small extension (approx. 300,000 km2) has one of the richest faunas in the Neotropics. Ecuadorian lepidoptera are far from being thoroughly known and only few groups, mainly in check-lists or material included in revisionary studies, have been treated over the years. Many Papilionoidea coming from the collections made by Buckley and Simon were de scribed by Hewitson (1869, 1869-77). Dognin (1887-96) reported on collections made in the Loja area by Gaujon . Other lepidoptera, collected by Whymper and by Stubel , were described by Godman & Salvin (1891) and Weymer (1890), respectively. The collecting trips of de Mathan , Baron , Rosenberg and other entomologists gave some important in formations, mainly incorporated in the Rothschild & J ordan (1906) revision. Haensch (1903a, b) gave informations on his itinerary and a list of the Ithomiines he collected. Campos (1927) published a catalogue of ecuadorian Lepidoptera but his informations are very often misleading. Feyer (1933,1934-35) reported on his collections made mainly in the Macas area. An invaluable source of information about zoological and entomological expeditions as well as gazetteer of localities is found in Brown (1941).

Papilionidae)* ** by TOMMASO RACHELI & MARINA PISCHEDDA Abstract: The populations of Papilio zagreus occurring in western Venezuela are related to a new subspecies named motiiones. The distribution of the taxonomic units of P. zagreus-comp\ex is analized taking account of paleoclimatic events. Introduction In 1981 the senior author during a collecting trip in Venezuela had the oppor tunity to examine several private collections as well as that located in the Instituto de Zoologia Agricola, Maracay and to collect in Apure and Sierra de Perija. During 1985 the junior author collected in the Apure area and succeeded in obtaining one male of P. zagreus. The differences found in the populations of Tachira and Zulia, remove them from the nominal subspecies. Papilio zagreus was described in 1847 from a single female collected by DYSON and figured in DOUBLEDAY (1848). In the original description the provenience is indicated only as „Venezuela" and all subsequent literature sources report no exact locality. VANE-WRIGHT (pers. comm.) however, informs us that DYSONs material is likely to come from the Province of San Esteban, coastal area of N. Venezuela. Specimens from this area are very scarce in collections, nonetheless the few specimens examined are different from the populations of Apure and the females fitted well with the holotype. It is therefore necessary to restrict the type locality of the nominal subspecies to San Esteban, until a systematic revision of Papilio zagreus-comp\ex has been carried out (RACHELI & PISCHEDDA in prep.).
