Elected Officials and Activists Cite Brewer’s Hard Work, Progressive Values, and Tenacity

(New York) Council Member Gale Brewer announced today that she has been endorsed by Assemblymembers Dick Gottfried and Brian Kavanagh, feminist writer and activist Gloria Steinem, former Council Member and Manhattan Borough President Ruth Messinger, former Lieutenant Governor , and former Assemblymember Ed Sullivan in her campaign for Manhattan Borough President.

“Gale is a unique and prodigious worker. She has a long and consistent record of activism and involvement in a broad range of community issues,” Dick Gottfried said. “I have seen this personally in our work together over so many years. She will make a great Borough President.”

“After working with Gale in the City Council and now as an Assemblymember, I have seen first-hand the kind of hard work and ethics she brings to her job,” Brian Kavanagh said. “She is the most accessible member of the City Council, and will continue to be as our Borough President.”

Assemblymember Dick Gottfried represents parts of the , Clinton/ Hell’s Kitchen, , Chelsea, and the Flatiron neighborhoods. He is the Chair of the Assembly Health Committee.

Assemblymember Brian Kavanagh represents parts of the Lower East Side, East Village, Gramercy, Stuyvesant Town, Murray Hill, and Midtown East.

Gloria Steinem is a journalist, a catalyst for the women’s movement, and co-founder of Ms. Magazine.

Ruth Messinger is a third-generation New Yorker and a liberal Democrat with an extensive career in city politics. She served as a Councilmember from the Upper West Side for three terms and as Manhattan Borough President for two. Today she serves as CEO of the American Jewish World Service, running a worldwide network of over 500 economic and social programs in over 25 countries.

Mary Anne Kruspak served as the first female Lieutenant from 1974-1978 after serving in the New York State Senate and the Assembly.

Ed Sullivan represented the Upper West Side in the New York Assembly, where he chaired the Higher Education Committee in the Assembly.

Gale Brewer has represented the Upper West Side and northern Clinton on the City Council since 2002 where she is the champion of the protecting domestic workers, with the Paid Sick Leave bill. She has passed a landmark Open Data law, a law banning smoking in city parks and beaches, and many other important laws. Gale routinely receives 80% or more of the vote. Prior to the City Council, Gale was a member of Community Board 7, Deputy Public Advocate, Director of the Mayor's Federal Office and chief of staff to Councilmember Ruth Messinger. She has also worked to create affordable housing, help non-profits and has a Master’s Degree from Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government. Gale teaches Urban Policy at Barnard, Baruch, Hunter, and other colleges. She and her husband, Cal Snyder, live on the Upper West Side where they have helped raise and foster 35 children, several of whom they have adopted. -30-
