Lutheran Education Association of Houston Dear Friends of LEAH Schools,

Board of Directors 2017-2018 Welcome to our first combined bi-annual report for all of the LEAH Schools serving the Houston area. God has blessed us with three schools: Lutheran South Academy founded in 1949 (as Lutheran High Mr. Kurt Rosenhagen, Chairman School of Houston), Lutheran North High School founded in 1980, and Westlake Preparatory Academy founded in 2008. Gloria Dei Lutheran Each school campus has its own unique personality and distinctiveness, yet each is connected to a mission Mr. Mike Hergenrader, Vice Chairman that has guided and directed the Lutheran Education Association of Houston (LEAH) for nearly 70 years. Memorial Lutheran—Katy The mission we share is to operate and champion exemplary Lutheran schools in the Houston area to God Provides expand Christ’s kingdom. LEAH Schools — Fall/Winter 2017 Dr. Thomas Leimkuehler, Secretary/Treasurer Gloria Dei Lutheran The impact for the kingdom that we can make in the Houston area is far greater as a LEAH Schools system than as individual schools. In the years ahead, we look forward to the next campuses that will be started within this region. The Rev. Jeffrey Muchow Harvey & LSA Epiphany Lutheran— Copperfield These pages tell the story of many of the blessings that each of our campuses has experienced in the last year. Even the recent event of 2 Hurricane Harvey continues to show the goodness and grace of our God as He leads us through our reconstruction efforts. Our mantra Mrs. Anne Kieschnik since the devastation of Hurricane Harvey is God Provides. Jehovah Jireh. He used resources from around the world to help us rebuild and replace our facilities and meet the needs of several of our staff persons who were affected by the flood waters. Gethsemane Lutheran Lutheran South Academy Our God is good. Our God is faithful. Our God does more than we could ever think or imagine. Thank you for the partnership with 4 Mr. Albert (Al) Hoppe your family as together we share His love with the Houston region through theses schools. On the night of August 26, 2017, the rains came down and the floodwater started to rise at Lutheran South Academy. By the early hours of the morning, the school’s security cameras revealed that every building on campus had taken on water. It took until Wednesday, August 30th, for administration to be able to physically access the campus, assess the damages, and to start developing a plan for recovery. The LSA Hurricane Harvey Journey has been a perfect example of God’s provision in so many ways. Looking back over the days since the storm, it is evident to see how God provided for LSA every step of the way through His people both locally and around the world. Leaders? He led a construction manager from the LSA parent community to oversee the demolition and rebuild. He led a Head of School to organize, encourage, and rally her team to face the challenge ahead with joy. He led the faculty and staff to go above and beyond and stretch their flexibility to the limit! Workers? He led over 1,000 people to volunteer the first three days to demo, remove, haul, sanitize, clean, mop, catalog, etc. These volunteers did everything that was needed to get the drying out of the buildings in place by the evening of Sept 2nd. Equipment? He helped to secure huge dehumidi- fiers, the donation of clean up-supplies and food, construction supplies, and large refuse trailers. Resources? He has provided LSA with donations totaling over $505,000 from all over the world with a safe harbor from this storm. LEAH Fall Report 2017.indd 6-7 12/29/17 6:25 PM Hurricane Harvey

“The rains came down and the floods came up…” The old Christian children’s song (“The Wise Man Built His House”) took on much greater meaning in the late summer of 2017. Hurricane Harvey paid all of Houston a visit and wreaked great devastation on many throughout the area, including our sister school, Lutheran South Academy. As cleanup took place days after the event, it was truly amazing to see the number of people who were ready to come forward to help rebuild homes, schools and businesses. To witness the over 1,300 volunteers who aided LSA in their efforts to get up and going again, was inspiring. Lutheran High North, through the efforts of Admissions Director Kendra Benson, our Cheerleaders and LHN student and parent volunteers, held a food/ cleaning supply/toiletries drive which filled 7 trucks with loads of goods, which were then delivered to the Beaumont area.

Many people are still impacted by the hurricane, and will continue to be for what may be several years.
