Dear Friends of LEAH Schools, Lutheran Education Association of Houston When Hurricane Harvey hit our area, our LEAH Schools team, with many people from the Houston region, waited several days for the rain to stop so we could assess the damage at our three campuses. Board of Directors 2018-2019 During the waiting period, a good friend called to wish us encouragement, and he shared with me two important pieces of advice. Mr. Kurt Rosenhagen, Chairman Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, Nassau Bay The first thing he told me was, “Embrace the Chaos”. He shared that over the next few days, weeks, and months we would be faced with things that we will have to learn how to handle on the fly. The roads were clear throughout the day and in the evening, we decided to go to the house of some friends. By the time we drove home that night, the rain was so severe that my wife, Our Flood Story Sherry, pulled out her phone and recorded the drive. At about 1:00am, while my attention was directed to the front of the house and the street, I was un- aware momentarily that water had begun pouring into the house from the back. Within an hour, the water was three feet deep throughout the house. Our home is one story but we have a portion of the attic that is finished and we moved upstairs into that room with our dog and cat and hoped the water would recede. Throughout the night, the water continued to climb and we anxiously watched the water line move up the stairs. By about 11:00am the next morning we made the decision to try and find a way to leave the house. While the water was a little over four feet deep in the house by that time, it was much deeper out at the street. We could hear boats out and about but none came down our street. My son, Stefan, swam out of our house to flag down a boat (see photo). Our students had opportunities to be involved in many successful programs throughout the year. Through these programs they learned to work with fellow students, and adults. They learned how to be part of a team, and that it is the parts that contribute to the whole. In I Corinthians 12:21 Paul, through the Holy Spirit, emphasizes the importance of being a part of the whole in Christ’s church on earth.

What creates success in a program? When students learn to work together for the good of the team, cast or crew. From girls basketball going to the playoffs again, to our boys basketball team going for the first time in several years, or the soccer team winning district again, success came through the dedication of working hard together. To watch our Spring Musical “Honk” bring in so many from our community, one knew growth was taking place among those who participated and then celebrated another successful production. Even putting together a successful “Praise Band” took dedication to a skill that when combined with others, made beautiful music. (And our Praise Band truly did!)

In the classrooms, our students spent time in their studies, reading and doing research, preparing for tests, and working individually and collaboratively on projects, and eventually the semester final.
