Dear Hevre,

Welcome to Newport Beach and the 43rd JRF Convention! Over the next four days we will engage in a new kind of California Dreaming — Visioning our Jewish Future.

As Reconstructionists, we know that conceived of Judaism as the evolving religious civilization of the Jewish people. My hope is that during this Convention each of you will gain a deeper un- derstanding of Kaplan’s words. We will have the opportunity to explore the evolution of Judaism generally and Reconstructionism in particular as we look to the future. As we engage with our speakers, participate in workshops, enjoy our entertainers and artists, sing, and join together in worship, we will experience the multi-faceted aspects of our religious civilization. And, finally, connecting with old friends and making new ones, sharing our stories, we will appreciate the sense of belonging to the Jewish people.

This Convention could not have happened without the dedicated work of the JRF staff and many, many volunteers. Rabbi Erin Hirsh, JRF’s Director of Education and our Convention Director, was the glue who held it all together. Thank you, Rabbi Erin, for being a wonderful partner.

L’shalom,

Sandy Goldman Convention Chair

he Torah being used for our Shabbat Torah service is the Women’s Torah of TKadima Reconstructionist Community in Seattle, WA. Created by the Women’s Torah Project (www.womenstorah.com), “It is the first woman-scribed Torah commis- sioned in modern times; the first Torah to be intentionally scribed by a partnership of women; and the first Torah to be supported, written and adorned by an international community of women and men sustaining one another through the hard work of transforming ideals into reality. But the WTP is already about more than creating a Sefer Torah, although that would be enough. It is about more than opening doors for women called to meaningful work that has been denied to them for millennia because of their gender, although that, too, would be enough. It is about transformation, about building connections, about bringing people closer to Torah by bringing Torah closer to them.”
