This is the second record for Mariaplax Rahayu and Ng from the Pleistocene deposits of Japan. Hexapus anfractus (Rathbun) recorded from the Holocene Nanyo Formation is re-evaluated and identified with the extant species, Mariaplax chenae Rahayu and Ng. By Mart J. Rathbun, Associate in Zoology, United States National Museum. INTRODUCTION. Fifty-eight species of Decapods are enumerated from the collec- tions examined by the author. Three species described by other authors are inserted in systematic order, thus making the list com- plete to date for the Panama region. All the available material in the United States National Museum from Panama and Costa Rica is included; it ranges in age from the Oligocene (Culebra formation) to the Pleistocene. In the list of stations and the table of distribution the data relat- ing to Cirripedia from Dr. H. A. Pilsbry's report are included for convenience of reference. The literature on Panama Tertiary Decapods is so scanty that it is not surprising that nearly all of the forms now examined prove to be new. -
New Hexapodid Crabs from the Eocene of Vicenza (NE Italy) (Crustacea, Decapoda, Brachyura, Hexapodidae)

Milano, 151 (I): 51-75, Gennaio 2010 Antonio De Angeli *, Danièle Guinot ** & Alessandro Garassino *** New hexapodid crabs from the Eocene of Vicenza (NE Italy) (Crustacea, Decapoda, Brachyura, Hexapodidae) Abstract - The Hexapodidae was known to date from the Cenozoic of Veneto by Stevea cesarii Beschin, Busulini, De Angeli & Tessier, 1994, from the middle Eocene of Chiampo Valley (Vicenza), and Palaeopinnixa sp. from the upper Eocene of Possagno (Treviso). Recent discoveries from the Eocene of Vicenza area allowed to describe three new genera and four new species of hexapodids. Bellhexapus granulatus n. gen., n. sp., Eohexapus albertii n. gen., n. sp., and Eurohexapus lobatus n. gen., n. sp. from the middle Eocene of “Albanello” quarry at Nogarole Vicentino (Vicenza), and Palaeopinnixa alontensis n. sp. from the upper Eocene of Alonte (Vicenza). Bellhexapus granulatus n. gen., n. sp. and Eurohexapus lobatus n. gen., n. sp. preserve the carapace, the ventral and abdominal male parts, while Eohexapus albertii n. gen., n. sp. preserves the carapace, the ventral and abdominal female parts. Palaeopinnixa alontensis n. sp. preserves instead only the carapace. Key words : Crustacea, Decapoda, Hexapodidae, Eocene, NE Italy. Riassunto - Nuovi crostacei hexapodidi dell’Eocene di Vicenza (NE Italia) (Crustacea, Decapoda, Brachyura, Hexapodidae). Zoosystema 28 (2) : 553-571. ABSTRACT Th e hexapodid genus Paeduma Rathbun, 1897 (replacement name for Amorpho- pus Bell, 1859) was established without fi gure for a species from an unknown locality, P. cylindraceum (Bell, 1859) (described as Amorphopus cylindraceus Bell, 1859). Paeduma cylindraceum was never reported ever since, and the holotype was considered lost. Th e examination of the holotype of Paeduma cylindraceum permits to know its provenance (the Galápagos Islands or alternatively some- KEY WORDS where on American Pacifi c coast) and the exact nature of the supposedly rudi- Crustacea, mentary fi fth ambulatory leg (P5) described by Bell (1859). Th e “rudiment” Decapoda, Brachyura, is in fact the external and exposed portion of the apodeme of P4 and not an Hexapodidae, “aborted” pereopod. Th e two other species subsequently attributed to Paeduma Amorphopus, Paeduma, are referred to Hexalaughlia n. gen. A new diagnosis for Paeduma is provided, Stevea, and the status of the extant and fossil Stevea Manning & Holthuis, 1981 is Hexalaughlia n. gen., re-considered. Evaluation of Paeduma has prompted some new views on the vestigial coxa, male gonopore, family Hexapodidae, and the presence for the fi rst time of two genera of the new genus. -

As a result, a total of 21 ant species representing 13 genera and 3 subfamilies and 26 aphid species belonging to 13 genera from 37 host plant species were collected and identified. Among the recorded ant species, the genus Crematogaster with four species had the highest species richness. The three most frequent aphid attendant ants were Lepisiota nigra (Dalla Torre, 1893), Tapinoma erraticum (Latreille, 1798) and Crematogaster inermis Mayr, 1862 associated with 11, 10 and 9 aphid species, respectively. Eleven ant species were recorded from the colonies of one aphid species. Among the recorded ants, the species Crematogaster sordidula (Nylander, 1849) is new to Iranian ant fauna. This record increases the recorded ant-fauna of Iran to over 171 species. Among the identified aphid species, Aphis craccivora Koch, 1856 had the highest ant attraction. -

We have been extracting energy, materials and organisms from nature and altering landscapes at a rate that cannot be a sustainable one. Our nature is an essential partnership; an 'essential', because each living species has its space and role', and performs an activity vital to the whole; a 'partnership', because the biological species or the living components of nature can only thrive together, because together they create a dynamic equilibrium. Nature is further a dynamic entity that never remains the same- that changes, that adjusts, that evolves; 'equilibrium', that is in spirit, balanced and harmonious. Nature, in fact, promotes evolution, radiation and diversity. The current biodiversity is an inherited vital resource to us, which needs to be carefully conserved for our future generations as it holds the key to the progress in agriculture, aquaculture, clothing, food, medicine and numerous other fields.
