JSC National Company “KazMunayGas” (KMG) is a vertically integrated national oil and gas company that operates across upstream, midstream and downstream segments, representing the interests of the state in the oil and gas industry of Kazakhstan. Outside of Kazakhstan, KMG has more than a thousand fuel sales points in Romania, Moldova, Bulgaria, and Georgia. KMG International N.V. is a strategic enterprise for oil refining and marketing in Romania and the countries of the Black Sea and Mediterranean basins with the access to the end-user market with a population of more than 300 million people. The company accounts for 26% of the total oil and gas condensate and 15% of natural and associated gas production in Kazakhstan, 56% of oil transportation via oil pipelines and tankers from the port of Aktau, as well as 79% of natural gas transportation via main gas pipelines and 82% of oil refining in Kazakhstan with a share of oil products retail market amounting to 17%. Out of a total CDN$61.5 billion in M&A’s, approximately half – or CDN$30.3 billion – involved foreign companies taking an ownership stake. These funds were invested in in situ projects, integrated projects, and land leases. As indicated in Figure 1, US and Chinese companies made the most concerted efforts to increase their profile in the oil sands, investing 2/3 of all foreign capital. The US and China both invested in a total of seven different projects. The French company, Total SA, has also spread its capital around several projects (four in total) while Royal Dutch Shell (UK), Statoil (Norway), and PTT (Thailand) each opted to take large positions in one project each. Table 1 provides a list of all foreign investments in the oil sands since 2004.     INVENTORY OF ENVIRONMENTAL WORK IN CHINA In this fifth issue of the China Environment Series, the Inventory of Environmental Work in China has been updated and we made extra effort to add many new groups, especially in the Chinese organization section. To better highlight the growing number of U.S. universities and professional associations active in China we have created a separate section. In the past inventories we have gathered information from U.S. government agencies; from this year forward we will be inventorying the work done by other governments as well. This inventory aims to paint a clearer picture of the patterns of aid and investment in environmental protection and energy-efficiency projects in the People’s Republic of China. We highlight a total of 118 organizations and agencies in this inventory and provide information on 359 projects.
