Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106- 1346 ABSTRACT The application of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT- IR) to the characterization of materials in art and archaeology is evaluated. The diffuse reflectance accessory was used extensively and an infrared microscope was utilized for microscopic samples. The development and theory of diffuse reflectance FT-IR spectroscopy are given and a brief outline of previous use of infrared spectroscopy in archaeological and art conservation is included. The experimental procedures and sample handling used in the research are explained in detail. Diffuse reflectance spectra of several classes of organic materials available in antiquity are presented. The classes of organic materials include waxes, fats and oils, bituminous materials, resins, amber, shellac, pitch, gums and gum resins and proteins. The spectra of the reference materials are interpreted in the light of the known information on chemical structure. Several examples of archaeological specimens which have been characterized are included. Two large groups of modern materials, a group of plastic sculptures and a collection of early plastic objects were characterized. Areas for future work include an expanded reference collection of modern materials and 2 the use of J-CAMP-DX programming language for interlaboratory exchange of data which is independent of the A major breakthrough was recognizing Joseph and Moses lived during the reigns of several pharaohs, not just one. During the 18th dynasty in which Joseph and Moses lived, the average reign was about 15 years; and Joseph lived 110 years and Moses lived 120 years. The last third of Moses' life was during the 19th dynasty. Though Rameses II had a reign of 66 years, the average reign of the other pharaohs was only seven years. Biblical chronology is superior to traditional Egyptian chronology Joseph was born in 1745 BC during the reign of Tao II. Joseph was 17 when he was sold into slavery (1728 BC), which was during the reign of Ahmose I, for the historically accurate amount of 20 pieces of silver.1 Moses (1571-1451 BC) was born 250 years after the death of the Hebrew patriarch, Abraham. Moses lived in Egypt and wrote extensively about his conversations and interactions with the pharaoh of the Hebrews' exodus from Egypt; thus providing a primary source. The history of the Hebrews continued to be written by contemporaries for the next thousand years. These books (scrolls) were accurately copied and widely disseminated. The Dead Sea Scrolls contained 2,000 year old copies of every book of the Bible, except Esther, and the high accuracy of these copies to today's copies in original languages is truly astonishing.

All the authors were asked to follow the same basic pattern — an explanation in brief of their approach, followed by a discus- sion of three preselected decoration programmes. There was also the option to discuss a fourth tomb of their choice that may better illustrate their approach. The three tombs were chosen because they are well pub- lished and are spread out in time. They are, in chronological order, the chapel of Seshathotep, Giza 5150, the chapel of Kaiemnofret in Saqqara and the chapel of Kaihep Tjeti Iker, el-Hawawish H26. All authors were asked to deal with two main aspects of the decoration — the purpose/sense, and the factual information that can be derived from the decoration. There are a total of 8 articles, presented in alphabetical order, preceded by an introductory article, and all have a brief sum- mary in two languages in the front of the book. Four of the articles are in English, one is in French and three are in Ger- man, as are the Foreword and the introductory article. The contributions by individual authors are preceded by an introductory essay by Martin Fitzenreiter which may be sum- marized as follows. The essay starts with a brief paragraph on what gathering together eight different articles might achieve — we would expect eight similar essays if the authors are all ‘right’, but are those who maintain something different ‘wrong’? Does an approach like this open the door to ‘trivial Egyptology’ and ‘anything goes’? An examination of the meaning of ‘methodology’ and ‘interpretation’ may help answer this dilemma.
