As the Orchestra for the Next Generation, the MO is dedicated to ensuring diversity is considered at every opportunity, including through our musicians, our staff, our board and our patrons. Located in Montclair, New Jersey, 12 miles west of Manhattan, The Montclair Orchestra is uniquely positioned to collaborate with several professional orchestras, and serves as a training orchestra for highly advanced students preparing for a professional career. There is no other orchestra like The Montclair Orchestra anywhere in the country, and we are proud of the role we play in the development of young orchestral musicians. The Montclair Orchestra is made up of approximately 60% student “Fellows”, and 40% professional “Mentors”. Fellowships are awarded to undergraduate and graduate students at some of the most well-known music schools in the industry, participating in one-week intensives alongside some of the best orchestral musicians in the world. Mentors from the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra and Orchestra of St Luke’s teach through example, helping to advance a student’s playing and ensemble preparation in a way that can not be replicated in school. MO’s highly coveted Fellowships are the closest thing to a paid internship that students can experience in the music world. MO Fellows have gone on to win positions with National Symphony Orchestra, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, San Diego Symphony, New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, MET Opera Orchestra and more.

For the past four years of my undergraduate education, experiences with the Montclair Orchestra have provided me with musical sustenance, and a sense of learning and joy that I look forward to throughout each year. As an aspiring orchestral and chamber music violinist, the opportunity to learn and perform with some of the best professionals in the world and fellow college students has been crucial in my development as an artist. Njioma Grevious, Undergraduate Student, The Juilliard School

The Montclair Orchestra is led by esteemed David Chan. Maestro Chan is widely recognized around the globe as a pre-eminent violinist, and holds the position of Concertmaster for the prestigious Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. In addition to his roles with the MO and the MET, David is also highly sought after as a soloist around the world, and participates in several international music festivals including Pacific Music Festival and Aspen Music Festival. Maestro Chan oversees the artistic development of the orchestra, and through an intentional effort to balance expectations of today’s diverse audience with the traditional training requirements of orchestral students, the programming is designed to include a mixture of traditional composers with more unusual and modern works. The combination of seasoned veteran professionals and energetic, hard-working students creates a dynamic that is exceptionally enthusiastic, vibrant and engaging.

The Montclair Orchestra is a wonderful program that combines professional musicians and students in an inspiring, nurturing environment. I have grown so much as a musician through Montclair Orchestra and made wonderful friends and connections that I will have for the rest of my career. The Montclair Orchestra has been a large, valuable part of my education in NYC and an ensemble where I look forward to every concert we play! Katherine Gilger, Graduate Student, Mannes School of Music
