“When my first guide dog, Courage died, I wasn’t able to even consider another guide dog for over a year. I just couldn’t imagine replacing him. In hindsight, that wasn’t my best decision, and I realized that the moment I met my second guide, Nick. Courage and Nick are very different but both fill a very important role in my life.

Nick not only keeps me out of trips and falls and getting lost, he reconnects me with the world. With a cane I always felt unapproachable and marginalized. People just did not seem to know how to approach or start a conversation, so I was just ignored. Nick makes sure this doesn’t happen.”

“When I’m at home a lot, I feel like a big loser and I start to get really depressed. With her helping me get out, I feel like I’m not going to have those days anymore. I really like the ‘Check’ and ‘Watch’ commands and I thought about how many times I could have used them over the last few years. 14 STRATEGIC PRIORITY 2: SERVICES THAT TRANSFORM LIVES SOUTHEASTERN GUIDE DOGS 15 “HE’S CHANGED EVERYTHING FOR ME. I WOULDN’T TRADE HIM FOR ANYTHING.”

“I was 34 days into my deployment to Afghanistan when I was blown up by two anti-armor mortars and shot in the abdomen. I was sitting up against the compound wall when we were attacked. My injuries sustained included shrapnel through the forehead into the brain; shrapnel to both eyes, and also to my cheek and chin; a flayed shoulder from my armpit to the top of my shoulder; and shrapnel scattered down my right arm. My right hand was mangled. A bullet from an AK47 went clear through my abdomen. I had a chunk of shrapnel in my rib cage and scattered shrapnel in both legs. I lost four and a half inches from my tibia.

I woke up in Walter Reed a week later. I had a traumatic brain injury but wasn’t instantly blinded. I lost my sight a year later and they still don’t know why. That’s the million-dollar question.

From the first moment I met Zak, I couldn’t describe it in words. If I need to go somewhere, he takes me there. He’s changed everything for me. I wouldn’t trade him for anything.”

“Duchess is the sixth puppy we’ve raised. We decided to puppy raise before we had our daughter. We were attracted to the change that we could make when we saw these guide dogs actually working and changing the lives of a visually impaired person. “Thirteen years ago I was volunteering here when the kennel manager asked if I’d like to work here. I was just 18, and now I’ve been here almost half my life. I am now a certified guide dog instructor, first training dogs and then training our students how to navigate with their new guides.

It can be unsettling and stressful for our students to leave home and stay here for 26 days, and as trainers, we do all we can to help them get comfortable so they can learn and grow. That’s why I’m so excited about our new Student Center. To watch this facility come to life is amazing, and it’s going to maximize our ability to provide a world-class experience for our students. It will be a beautiful home-away- from-home and will transform the learning experience. It’s going to be great!”
