Key Findings

Junge Was A Wanderer With Few Michigan Ties

Junge Was Raised In And Spent The Vast Majority Of His Life Outside Of Michigan. Junge claims roots in the State of Michigan, but has spent the vast majority of his life outside the state. Junge’s family moved to California when he was 8 years old and he attended high school, college, and law school there. In total, Junge only spent 10 years of his life in Michigan (mostly as a young child) and 43 years outside of it. Junge’s father later established a scholarship at the University of Michigan, his alma mater, which Junge would not have been eligible for as a Californian. One of Junge’s first jobs was the office manager for Senator Pete Wilson, which he began shortly after his father contributed $2,000 to Wilson’s 1988 reelection bid.

Junge Was A Failed California Lawyer Who Endangered Victims Of Domestic Abuse. Junge became a Deputy District Attorney in Ventura County, CA in 1994. Junge’s incompetence became the subject of news coverage in the Los Angeles Times later that year when he barged into a meeting between a public defender and a victim of domestic violence to serve a subpoena. Junge’s rash action caused the case to be ruled a mistrial and for charges to be nearly dropped against the victim’s accused abuser. While the case was ultimately retried in a new trial, Junge was removed from the case and ended his employment with the Ventura DA’s Office in early 1995.

Junge Was A TV Anchor Who Spent Little Time In Michigan. After his debacle at the Ventura DA’s office, Junge decided to take his talents elsewhere and proceeded to begin a decade of wandering from state to state, working as a local TV anchor in Colorado, Arkansas, Missouri, and even for a short time in Michigan.

Junge Continued To Wander From Job To Job, Working The Chamber Of Commerce In California, Which Opposed The ACA. Junge decided once again to change his career path, and took a job with the Oakland (California) Chamber of Commerce where he supported outsourcing manufacturing to Canada and supported heavy State law enforcement presence on the streets of Oakland. Junge took a job with the California Chamber of Commerce next, which had recently opposed the state ACA Exchange signed into law by Governor Schwarzenegger. Junge then found himself on the other side of the country, serving as the President of the St. Mary’s County, Maryland Chamber of Commerce in an exurb of Washington, DC.

Junge Spread Misinformation During A Pandemic

Junge Helped Perpetuate Dangerous Misinformation Regarding COVID-19. As part of a virtual campaign event, Junge hosted Michigan GOP operative and doctor Robert Steele to discuss the COVID-19 Pandemic. In this event with the attentive ear of Junge, Steele proceeded to peddle a series of falsehoods regarding the pandemic. Steele equated COVID-19 to the seasonal flu, despite the overwhelming scientific consensus that this was not the case. Steele downplayed the important role of testing in getting states reopened, again flying in the face of accepted scientific reality. Steele also accused frontline medical professionals of inflating COVID-19 statistics, something Dr. has categorically stated is not occurring.

Junge Expressed Skepticism Regarding Immunizations And Showed Ignorance Of Medical Fact. Just before COVID-19 lockdowns in early 2020, Junge expressed skepticism at a campaign event about the effectiveness of some vaccines and stated that there should be some exceptions for making them mandatory. Junge also falsely claimed that HPV is not a communicable disease and that universal immunization for that disease did not make medical sense.

[…] Both sides missed the first tossup question, asking for the Italian word for ‘slow down’ in music, which is ‘ritardando’ or ‘ritard.’ But both teams settled down, although one could see the anxiety in the Escondido team of Busse, Jose Duarte, Jeff Hobbs, Velina Underwood and Vinka Valdivia as Torrey Pines jumped to its big, early lead. Then the nervous looks and squirming came from the Torrey Pines team of Ensign, Mike Maheu, Paul Junge, Ted Cox and James Schwall as Escondido climbed back and into the lead. Junge’s Father Later Created A Scholarship At The University Of Michigan That Junge Would Not Have Been Eligible For As A Student

Junge’s Father Created The Junge Family Scholarship At The University Of Michigan-Dearborn. “When John Junge was applying to college as a teenager in Jackson, Michigan, he assumed he would have to go to community college first because of financial constraints. But he won a scholarship to the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor instead. After learning about the Dearborn campus's cooperative education program, he transferred so he could earn money in his chosen profession while finishing his studies. Now he's giving back. Junge, '64 BSE-IE, '67 MBA, established a scholarship for high school students who want to attend the University of Michigan- Dearborn College of Engineering and Computer Science.” [University of Michigan, accessed 5/12/20]

The Scholarship Was Only Available To Students Who Attended High School In Michigan Or Transferred From Local Community Colleges. “The Junge Family Endowed Scholarship Fund, established by a gift of $350,000, provides scholarships to undergraduate students in the Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering at the College of Engineering and Computer Science. Students must have attended a Michigan high school or have transferred from Jackson Community College, Henry Ford Community College, Calvin College, or Hope College. ‘We are honored that John Junge and his family chose to give back to the College of Engineering and Computer Science,’ said Dean Subrata Sengupta. ‘Mr. Junge's generosity ensures that another generation of engineers will have the opportunity to follow his path. We are very grateful for that.’ Since 1985, Junge has owned All-Star Inc., a San Diego-based company that provides management and operations service to certain government and military facilities in 18 states and Germany. The company earns about $250 million in gross annual sales and employs more than 1,200 people.” [University of Michigan, accessed 5/12/20]

1994: Junge’s “Highly Inappropriate” Actions In A Case Resulted In A Mistrial And The Near Dismissal Of Domestic Violence Charges Against A Defendant

Junge Was Assigned As A Prosecutor For A Case Against Someone Charged With Spousal Battery. “The judge's ruling means that Mitchell Blair, 38, of Oxnard, must stand trial on a misdemeanor spousal battery charge. The case is scheduled to return to court today for assignment to trial.” [Los Angeles Times, 11/23/94]

Junge Barged Into A Meeting Between A Public Defender And The Defendant’s Wife, The Alleged Victim In The Case. “Blair's case was in trial last month when Junge saw Blair's wife, the alleged victim in the case, enter a conference room in the public defender's office, according to court records. Moments later, he and a district attorney's investigator entered the room without knocking and gave the woman a subpoena, Brodie said.” [Los Angeles Times, 11/23/94]

prosecutor's conduct. […] The judge declared a mistrial when he learned what happened, and Assistant Dist. Atty. Kevin J. McGee apologized to the public defender's office. [Los Angeles Times, 11/23/94]

Junge Was Removed From The Case. “Deputy Dist. Atty. Kevin G. De Noce, who said Junge has been removed from the case, argued against dismissal of the charge. He said Junge's actions were improper, but dismissal was too severe a sanction.” [Los Angeles Times, 11/23/94]

The Defense Argued For Dismissal Of Charges, Jeopardizing The State’s Entire Case. “However, the public defender's office argued in court that Junge's behavior was so inappropriate, it justified dismissal of the case. Deputy Public Defender Randolph Tucker said the incident interrupted Blair's wife as she was about to recant her earlier statements to police about being beaten by the defendant.” [Los Angeles Times, 11/23/94]

The Judge Ultimately Declined To Dismiss Charges Outright. “A prosecutor who barged into a defense attorney's office to subpoena a witness did not behave so badly that criminal charges should be dismissed against the defendant, a Municipal Court judge ruled Tuesday.” [Los Angeles Times, 11/23/94]

2010: The California Chamber Of Commerce Opposed The Bill Creating California’s ACA Exchange. “When Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed two laws establishing a health reform exchange Friday, it was a historic moment. It was also, more subtly, a defiant moment, as the governor drafted into law concepts that some health insurers and the California Chamber of Commerce bitterly opposed. On Tuesday, the Chamber of Commerce ran a full-page ad in the Los Angeles Times, urging Schwarzenegger not to sign the law. “The devil’s in the details,” the ad said. ‘We respectfully ask you to veto AB 1602 and SB 900.’ The ad, also signed by California Taxpayers' Association and the National Federation of Independent Business, said the bills would levy fees on the cost of the health care exchange that would be passed to patients. Steele Claimed That Earlier Projections Regarding COVID-19 Were “Completely Wrong.” “JUNGE: ‘We’re seeing record unemployment and that’s because orders from the government saying you must shut down economic activity and those impacts are real. […] You wrote an editorial that was published, I think it was in The Detroit News not much more than a week ago with some really useful information about what we’ve learned. Maybe it wasn’t unreasonable back in March or even earlier to say gosh what could happen and take action but we’ve learned a lot since then, haven’t we?’ […] STEELE: ‘What we see from the beginning is that the initial projections

Paul Junge (MI-08) Research Book | 23 of everything having to do with both worldwide and having to do with various countries and for various things, mortality, infections, disabilities and so forth, we found that the original theories and projections, hypotheses were completely wrong and now we have a lot of data to show that’s the case” [COVID Q&A Happy Hour With Dr. Rob Steele, 4:12, 5/14/20]

Steele Claimed, “Testing Is No More Important For Opening Up The Economy Than It’d Be In A Bad Flu Season.” This Was False.

Steele Claimed “Testing Is No More Important For Opening Up The Economy Than It’d Be In A Bad Flu Season. “JUNGE: ‘Speaking of tests, you mentioned just a moment ago that out in LA whether it was the mayor or somebody else said that we can’t open until we have a vaccine and you’ve already addressed why that’s just nonsensical. People talk about the important role testing will play opening back up, some people have suggested until we can test everybody all the time. What’re your thoughts about the role testing will play in opening back up economic and all kinds of activity? STEELE: ‘Well the most important role for testing is in protecting the people who’re higher risk and the health care workers who are in contact with the higher risk people. Testing is no more important for opening up the economy than it’d be in a bad flu season.’ JUNGE: ‘Mhm-hm.’” [COVID Q&A Happy Hour With Dr. Rob Steele, 28:13, 5/14/20]

According To Robert Redfield, The Trump-Appointed Director Of The CDC, Widespread Tracing Is Needed For Reopening To Occur. “I want to spend a moment to focus on several key elements. First testing, rapid, extensive and widely available timely testing is essential for reopening America.” [Robert Redfield, Senate Health Committee, 5/23/20]

Formed CDC Director Tom Frieden Stated That Widespread Contact Tracing And Testing Is Necessary For Reopening. ““In order to go back out, we need to box the virus in. After , the next step is to box the virus in by implementing four essential actions – test, isolate, contact trace, and quarantine. All are crucial; if anyone is weak, the virus can escape and spread explosively again.” [Tom Frieden, House Appropriations Committee, 5/6/20]

Caitlin, Rivers, With The Johns Hopkins University School Of Public Health, Echoed These Comments. “These three capacities – testing, contact tracing, and healthcare – are what will enable us to transition safely from staying home to slow the spread into a gradual reopening.” [Caitlin Rivers, House Appropriations Committee, 5/6/20]

Steele Suggested That COVID-19 Was No More Severe Than The Seasonal Flu In Spite Of The Unequivocal Conclusions Of Public Health Officials To The Contrary

Steele Said The Media Was Scaremongering Over A Disease That Was “In Essence” The Flu. “STEELE: We have the media trying full time to make people afraid of something that in essence, in a general way, you should be thinking about it being a severe flu.” [COVID Q&A Happy Hour With Dr. Rob Steele, 21:11, 5/14/20]

Steele Said That COVID-19 “Approximates The Flu.” “We have enough information to know now that it approximates the flu.” [COVID Q&A Happy Hour With Dr. Rob Steele, 21:36, 5/14/20]

Testing Has Reinforced The Scientific Consensus That Steele’s Statements Are False. “‘Results from coronavirus antibody tests have started to trickle in, and they bolster the consensus among disease experts that the virus is significantly more lethal than seasonal flu and has seeded the most disruptive pandemic in the past century. ‘I think it is the worst pandemic since 1918,’ said Cecile Viboud, an epidemiologist at the National Institutes of Health’s Fogarty International Center, alluding to the ‘Great ’ pandemic that claimed an estimated 675,000 lives in the United States.’” [Washington Post, 4/28/20]

Steele Accused Hospitals And Physicians Of Inflating Their COVID-19 Death Tolls

Steele Accused Frontline Medical Staff Of Misattributing Cases To COVID-19 To Receive Higher Payouts. “STEELE: ‘I know hospitals right now are working their tails off looking at every chart that might have COVID attached to it and turning it into the primary diagnosis so they can get a higher payment. That’s unequivocally true.’” [COVID Q&A Happy Hour With Dr. Rob Steele, 35:44, 5/14/20]

Steele Also Claimed That Overall Deaths In The U.S. Were Lower Than Average. “To see that it’s really different you would have to say that the total death rate in the United States should be quite in excess over previous years, and it’s in the range, it’s less than the average of the last few years actually. It’s in the range.” [COVID Q&A Happy Hour With Dr. Rob Steele, 38:47, 5/14/20]

Dr. Anthony Fauci Of NIH Has Stated That COVID-19 Deaths Are Undercounted, Not Inflated. “A month ago, the government’s top infectious disease expert, Anthony S. Fauci, appeared on the ‘Today’ show to discuss the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Asked whether experts were overstating the number of deaths from covid-19, the disease caused by the virus, Fauci said that was unlikely. He was then asked whether the deaths were being undercounted. ‘I think there’s more of a chance of missing some that are really coronavirus deaths that are not being counted,’ he said, “but I don’t think that number is significant enough to really substantially modify the trends that we’re seeing at all.’ […] A version of the same question was posed to Fauci during his testimony before the Senate on Tuesday. ‘The official statistic, Dr. Fauci, is that 80,000 Americans have died from the pandemic,’ Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) said, referring to the current death toll. ‘There are some epidemiologists who suggest the number may be 50 percent higher than that. What do you think?’ ‘I’m not sure, Senator Sanders, if it’s going to be 50 percent higher,’ Fauci replied. ‘But most of us feel that the number of deaths are likely higher than that number.’” [Washington Post, 5/12/20]

Steele Claimed That COVID-19 Was “Low Risk” For Most People

Steele Claimed That COVID-19 Was “Low Risk” For Most People. “STEELE: ‘I mean it’s literally…for some reason people don’t want to look at it for what it is. It’s a widespread disease in the community with moderate risk, well very low risk. For people who get it it’s moderate. But even older people who get this disease their death rate is still low, I mean low, 10% or whatever. [COVID Q&A Happy Hour With Dr. Rob Steele, 28:53, 5/14/20]

Steele Said That A Death Rate Of 10% For Older People Was Low “Or Whatever.” “STEELE: ‘But even older people who get this disease their death rate is still low, I mean low, 10% or whatever if you’re over 80.’ JUNGE: ‘Mhm-hm Mhm-hm.’” [COVID Q&A Happy Hour With Dr. Rob Steele, 29:06, 5/14/20]

Steele Called The Idea That The Economy Could Not Be Opened Without Testing “Nonsensical.” “STEELE: ‘The idea that we can’t reopen without testing, it’s nonsensical. It doesn’t make any sense whatsoever. When you think about it, would we do that for the flu? No we wouldn’t.’” [COVID Q&A Happy Hour With Dr. Rob Steele, 29:16, 5/14/20]

Junge Expressed Skepticism Regarding Immunizations, And Showed Ignorance Of Medical Fact

2020: Junge Supported “Some Exceptions” For Immunization Against Communicable Disease

2020: Junge Supported “Some Exceptions” For Immunization Against Communicable Disease. “Q: ‘I was wondering, what’s your position on mandatory immunizations?’ […] JUNGE: ‘There’s a couple different parts I think to immunizations. I think, If you look at what modern medicine was able to do in eradicating polio, eradicating, or eradicating… I forget them because they’re basically gone… yeah all of these deadly diseases that killed hundreds of thousands of people, there, as a matter of public health, with some exceptions for conscience, or for medical reasons.” [Larry Parsons, YouTube, 3/7/20]

2020: Junge Said That HPV Vaccines Needed A “Careful Looking”, And That They Shouldn’t Necessarily Be Mandatory

2020: Junge Said That HPV Vaccines Needed To Be “Carefully” Looked At. “JUNGE: ‘Some of the problems that are occurring with other types of immunizations do deserve some careful looking. I don’t have children of my own, so I am not as personally involved with this.’” [Larry Parsons, YouTube, 3/7/20]

Junge Claimed That HPV Is Not A Communicable Disease And That The Vaccine Should Not Be Mandatory. “I understand that for cervical cancer that they are requiring immunizations and I’m like wait a minute that’s not a communicable disease where we necessarily need to have immunization for everyone.” [Larry Parsons, YouTube, 3/7/20]

HPV, Which Causes Cervical Cancer, Is A Communicable, Sexually Transmitted, Infection. “Most cervical cancers are associated with human papillomavirus (HPV), a sexually transmitted infection. Widespread immunization with the HPV vaccine could reduce the impact of cervical cancer worldwide.” [Mayo Clinic, accessed 5/7/20]

Junge Was A Member Of The Torrey Pines Academic Team. “Torrey Pines High School defeated Escondido High School 84-64 last night to win the North County Academic League championship. But Torrey Pines, backed by some loud supporters, took control in the waning minutes. The semifinal matches lasted 25 minutes each.” [SDUT, 5/11/84]

Junge’s Father Created A Scholarship For The University Of Michigan That Junge Himself Would Have Not Been Eligible For As A Student

Junge’s Father Supported A Scholarship At The University Of Michigan-Dearborn That Paul Junge Would Not Have Been Eligible For

Junge’s Father Also Provided $2 Million For An Athletic Events Facility At The University Of Michigan In Ann Arbor

Junge’s Father Also Provided $2 Million For An Athletic Events Facility At The University Of Michigan In Ann Arbor. “As a high school student in the late 1950s in Jackson, Mich., John Junge thought he would attend community college due to personal financial limitations. But after earning a scholarship to the University of Michigan, he was able to graduate with two degrees -- a bachelor's in industrial engineering in 1964 and an MBA in 1967 -- and enjoy a successful career in business. Over the next 37 years, as the CEO and president of Champions of the West, Inc./All Star International in San Diego, Junge had more than realized the value of his investment. When Junge and his family learned in 2002 that the Michigan Athletic Department sorely needed an events center for recruiting, banquets, press conferences and meetings, the family donated more than $2 million toward the construction of an 11,400-square-foot facility. The $4.5 million facility was completed in 2005 and named the Junge Family Champions Center and Mortenson Family Plaza.” [University of Michigan, 1/22/13]

The Judge In The Case Called Junge’s Actions “Highly Inappropriate” And Declared A Mistrial. “Paul Junge were ‘highly inappropriate,’ Judge Edward F. Brodie ruled that the defense was not harmed by the prosecutor's conduct.

2011: Junge Backed The Oakland Police Chief After His Resignation Following A Dispute With The Mayor

2011: Oakland Police Chief Anthony W. Batts Resigned Following Disputes With The Mayor And City Council. “Oakland Police Chief Anthony W. Batts, who clashed with Mayor Jean Quan and the City Council over staffing and resources amid a rise in violent crime, announced his resignation Tuesday in a letter to Police Department employees. Batts, who joined the department in 2009 after being recruited away from Long Beach by

Paul Junge (MI-08) Research Book | 42 then-Mayor Ronald V. Dellums, did not say why he was leaving or what he planned to do next. In his resignation letter, the chief said he believed when taking the job that he was answering ‘the call for a reform-minded chief; a leader with a focus on community policing and high professional standards.’” [Los Angeles Times, 10/11/11]

Junge Expressed Regrets At Batts’ Resignation. “In an interview Tuesday, Oakland Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce public policy director Paul Junge expressed regret at Batts' resignation and said, ‘it did appear that there was some disconnect between the police chief and the mayor.’ Junge added that Quan "does show good energy and interest" in public safety. An Oakland ballot measure passed years ago is supposed to guarantee a minimal police force of 803 officers, but the numbers have plummeted into the mid-600s. Junge said Batts had addressed the chamber just six or so weeks ago and "he spoke with a good deal of passion and conviction about curfews and anti- loitering measures. ‘But at a recent council meeting on the topic he ‘seemed very muted. We did kind of wonder if he didn't feel supported at the higher levels of the city.’” [Los Angeles Times, 10/11/11]

Anthony Batts Later Served As The Baltimore Police Chief Until His Firing In 2015 In The Wake Of Protests In That City. “The Baltimore mayor fired the troubled city's police commissioner Wednesday, saying that a recent spike in homicide rates weeks after a black man died of injuries in police custody required a change in leadership. Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake thanked Police Commissioner Anthony Batts for his service and announced that she was appointing Deputy Police Commissioner Kevin Davis as interim commissioner. 2011: Junge Expressed Concern About The “Negative Ramifications” On The Business Community Of Occupy Wall Street Protests In Oakland

2011: Junge Expressed Concern About The “Negative Ramifications” On The Business Community Of Occupy Wall Street Protests In Oakland. “Oakland employers braced on Tuesday for a planned general strike by the Occupy Oakland movement, with some deciding to stay open, others opting to close, still others letting employees work from home -- and some closing in sympathy with the aims of the protest. […] The Oakland Chamber of Commerce raised alarms about the continued economic impact. ‘There are a number of negative ramifications from these protests,’ said Paul Junge, director of public policy with the chamber.’ A number of local businesses are seeing sales drop off dramatically.” [Contra Costa Times, 11/1/11]

Junge Claimed That The Protests Called Commercial Real Estate Deals In Oakland To Fall Through. “The revived Occupy Oakland movement has called for a citywide general strike Wednesday that has garnered nationwide support from activists and the philosophical backing of labor unions, while triggering growing consternation that the city's strained economy could suffer further. […] Meanwhile, some merchants in the plaza say business has plummeted. And Paul Junge, public policy director for the Oakland Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce, said two commercial landlords had nearly inked deals fall through.” [Los Angeles Times, 11/2/11]

Junge Claimed That The Rescinded Agreements Amounted To At Least 35,000 Square Feet Of Office Space. “Paul Junge, the chamber's public policy director, said three companies have rescinded their plans to move into at least 35,000 square feet of office space, citing the safety issues brought on by the protest. Junge said he hears complaints from business owners who are facing 40 to 50 percent reductions in sales and an increase in shoplifting. He added that the protest is also undermining the city's recent ‘renaissance’ and bout of optimism, and current shop owners now say they would not sign leases with the city because of the protest.” Oakland is not a city without its challenges Junge said, but this protest has brought the city ‘10 steps back.’” [International Business Times News, 11/11/11]

Junge Said The Protests Added To The “Uphill Battle” For Oakland. “‘There are real business consequences to this occupation, to this agitation, to the protest," said Paul Junge, the Oakland Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce policy director. ‘Oakland is a great place, and there's so much positive to sell about it, but we are fighting an uphill battle.’” [Los Angeles Times, 11/5/11]

Paul Junge (MI-08) Research Book | 43

Junge Blamed Some Of The Protesters Actions On Oakland Councilwoman Jean Quan, And Said That She Shouldn’t Let “Kids” Override “Law And Order.” “A year ago, lifelong progressive activist and Oakland Councilwoman Jean Quan linked arms with protesters and faced off against a phalanx of officers in riot gear near this city's graceful civic center. On Thursday there she was as mayor, police chief by her side, trying to explain her response to Occupy Oakland. Quan had ordered police last week to dismantle the tent city. Then she let the protesters rebuild. A general strike Wednesday started out peacefully but turned violent. Amid the unrest, residents have launched a mayoral recall effort. Business owners are demanding the encampment be shut down for good. Protesters vow to stay. […] ‘There are real business consequences to this occupation, to this agitation, to the protest,’ said Paul Junge, the Oakland Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce policy director. ‘Oakland is a great place, and there's so much positive to sell about it, but we are fighting an uphill battle. ‘With parenting, you don't let the kids set the rules and the agenda,’ he said of Quan's approach. ‘Too much of the language is, 'We're asking them to do this.' Hey, you have to establish law and order.’” [Los Angeles Times, 11/5/11]

Junge Claimed That Oakland Businesses Saw A 40%-60% Decline In Sales As A Results Of Occupy Protests. “The effects of Occupy Oakland have rippled beyond the city plaza, said Paul Junge, public policy director of the Oakland Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce. ‘We are seeing serious losses of business,’ Junge said. ‘People have lost 40 percent, 50 percent, 60 percent of their sales’ Occupy Oakland representatives responded that small merchants are among those the movement aims to help.” [San Jose Mercury News, 11/8/11]

Junge Also Claimed Similar Figures In A Letter To Mayor Quan. “Owners of some small Oakland, Calif., businesses are urging Occupy protesters to pack up and go home, saying the encampments are killing business. "The impact of the urban encampment has been very negative," said Paul Junge, public policy director for the Oakland Chamber of Commerce. ‘We are aware of dozens of small businesses in and around Frank Ogawa Plaza where the tents are, reporting 40 percent to 50 percent losses in the past three or four weeks, including clothing stores, coffee shops, and conference spaces.’ Junge said people are avoiding demonstrators in Oakland, where protesters shut down the port and clashed with police downtown, resulting in more than 100 arrests. Store windows were broken and buildings were spray-painted with graffiti. ‘They don't like walking around down there, it makes them nervous, they are taking their business elsewhere,’ he said in a three-page letter to Mayor Jean Quan, The Christian Science Monitor reported.” [UPI, 11/10/11]

Junge Said That Local Politicians’ Sympathy For The Occupy Protests Caused The City To Become “A Magnet For Lots Of Folks Who Aren’t From Oakland In Creating Problems For Lots Of Regular Folks.” “PAUL JUNGE: In their anxiousness to show some sympathy to the cause and not be the bad guys, it ends up being a magnet for lots of folks who aren't from Oakland in creating problems for lots of regular folks just trying to go about their day to day business who really weren't part of the problem in the first place.” [NPR, All Things Considered, 11/9/11]

Junge Called The Impact Of A Protester Encampment “Very Negative.” “‘The impact of the urban encampment has been very negative," says Paul Junge, public policy director for the Oakland Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce. Three businesses with commitments to new leases in the downtown area, which would have brought in some 350 jobs, backed out of their agreements in the past three weeks, he says. ‘We are aware of dozens of small businesses in and around Frank Ogawa Plaza where the tents are, reporting 40 to 50 percent losses in the past three or four weeks,’ including clothing stores, coffee shops, and conference spaces, Mr. Junge says. ‘People don't like walking around down there, it makes them nervous ... they are taking their business elsewhere.’” [Christian Science Monitor, 11/10/11]

2011: Junge Supported The City Of Oakland’s Action To Clear The Occupy Protestor Encampment

2011: Junge Supported The City Of Oakland’s Action To Clear The Occupy Protestor Encampment. “Oakland police, acting early Monday morning, have now cleared the Occupy Oakland encampment for a second time. But it is still not clear whether the municipality and protesters are drawing up hard battle lines or if these local skirmishes have implications for the overall Occupy movement. What is clear is that in Oakland, city and business

Paul Junge (MI-08) Research Book | 44 leaders are on one side, with protesters and a variety of supporters, such as unions, on the other. According to a city statement Monday morning, ‘lodging will be strictly prohibited’ in the Frank Ogawa Plaza near City Hall, where protesters have been ensconced since Oct. 10. And, says Paul Junge, director of public policy for the Oakland Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce, ‘we are pleased with the action the city took.’” [Christian Science Monitor, 11/14/11]

Junge Backed A City Council Resolution To Police The Port Of Oakland Against Protestors. “Councilmember Ignacio De La Fuente said Wednesday he will reintroduce a resolution aimed at averting another protester-driven port shutdown, one day after his council colleagues chose not to vote on it. ‘Like I said last night, we have to be responsible for our actions,’ he said. ‘The mayor and the City Council have to be on record on this.’” […] Port of Oakland Executive Director Omar Benjamin and the Chamber of Commerce's Paul Junge backed the resolution, warning that repeated protests could hurt the port's ability to measure up with competitors along the West Coast. ‘You of course are the legitimate authority for the people of Oakland,’ Junge told the council. ‘It is absolutely appropriate that you should direct your police chief and city administrator to uphold the laws of Oakland.’” [San Jose Mercury News, 12/21/11]

2011: Junge Supported An Injunction Against An Oakland Gang, Despite Evidence That It Did Not Reduce Violent Crime

2011: Junge Supported An Injunction Against An Oakland Gang, Despite Evidence That It Did Not Reduce Violent Crime. “The North Oakland gang injunction has not reduced violent crime, according to a report by the Oakland Police Department that shows homicides, assaults and other serious crimes have risen in the safety zone area defined by the injunction, and arrests for weapons and drugs are way down. […] Before the gang injunction went into effect there were 123 violent crimes, including two homicides, between April 4, 2009, and June 1, 2010. After the injunction was implemented, there were 176 violent crimes, including three homicides, between June 2, 2010, and Oct. 6, 2011. Weapons arrests dropped 58 percent, and drug arrests fell 71 percent. […] But Paul Junge, public policy director for the Oakland Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce, said the business community supports the injunction, despite the statistics that show that violent crime has not decreased. ‘It's a reasonable conclusion that it seems to be effective if only because 15 gang members did not commit crimes in the safety zone,’ he said.” [San Jose Mercury News, 11/8/11]

2012: Junge Worked With The Group Stand For Oakland, Which Was Formed To Express Opposition To The Occupy Oakland Protestors

Junge Was A Part Of Stand For Oakland, Who Led A Demonstration To The Oakland Courthouse Opposing The Occupy Protests. “Occupy Oakland protesters got a taste of their own medicine Monday. Occupiers marched from a courthouse to Frank H. Ogawa Plaza for a noon rally only to find about 40 people protesting them. The group, calling itself Stand for Oakland, was organized by several neighborhood leaders to show public opposition to Occupy Oakland's recent costly demonstrations and its focus on Oakland police, rather than the travails of the poor and middle class. ‘I think this will make them see that the citizens are concerned and that the citizens are tired of the actions that they are taking,’ said Angela Haller, a Neighborhood Watch leader who helped organize the rally. Among those participating in Stand for Oakland was Councilwoman Desley Brooks, several neighborhood leaders, developer Phil Tagami and Oakland Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce official Paul Junge.” [Contra Costa Times, 2/6/12]

The Group Was Outnumbered By Occupy Oakland Protestors. “They were outnumbered in the plaza by about 150 Occupy supporters, who had scheduled their own rally to decry police violence. Members of the dueling rallies intermingled, but the Occupiers' only skirmish was with police.” [Contra Costa Times, 2/6/12]

Stand For Oakland Was Ridiculed By Occupy Oakland For The Presence Of Junge, As A Representative Of The Chamber Of Commerce, In Their Demonstration. “Peg and other citizens, of all political stripes, have formed an anti-Occupy group called Stand for Oakland. At the recent anti-repression rally, they staged a silent counter-protest, standing on the steps of City Hall, staring down the shouting Occupiers right in front of

them. Occupiers gleefully pointed me to one official from the Oakland Chamber of Commerce, Paul Junge, in the crowd, as good reason to dismiss the counter-protesters as corporatists and agents of the 1 percent.” [National Review, 3/5/12]

2012: Junge Opposed A Proposed Alameda County Ordinance To Force Drugmakers To Dispose Of Unused Drugs

2012: Junge Opposed An Alameda County Ordinance To Force Drugmakers To Dispose Of Unused Drugs. “After a week of intense eleventh-hour lobbying by drug companies, Alameda County supervisors decided to delay an ordinance that would have made it the first local government to require pharmaceutical companies to take back their products. A 4-0 vote in favor of the ordinance was expected. Instead supervisors decided to postpone a vote until no later than June. […] Paul Junge from the Oakland Municipal Chamber of Commerce also warned that thousands of drug companies might decide not to do business in Alameda County because of the ordinance. ‘That would be bad for all our residents,’ Junge said.” [Contra Costa Times, 3/13/13]

The Proposal Was Introduced To Combat Prescription Drug Addiction. “There already are 128 drug drop- off sites in the Bay Area, used by residents in 2009 to dispose of 60,000 pounds of unwanted pharmaceuticals. Alameda County's ordinance, which estimates costs at $200,000, would have required manufacturers to come up with detailed plans for financing and collecting prescription and over-the-counter drugs. Companies could not pass on the cost to consumers.” [Contra Costa Times, 3/13/13]

2012: Junge Supported BART’s Purchase Of Over A Billion Dollars In Rail Cars From Bombardier, A Canadian Corporation

2012: Junge Supported BART’s Purchase Of Over A Billion Dollars In Rail Cars From Bombardier, A Canadian Corporation, Over Union Objections. “BART's board of directors voted unanimously Thursday to buy 410 new train cars for $896.3 million from a Canadian firm, over objections that not enough of the contract will be fulfilled by U.S. workers and suppliers. This marks the first time in 40 years that the Bay Area Rapid Transit district is buying vehicles with entirely new technology, without needing them to be compatible with an older fleet. The board is expected to buy more cars from Canada-based Bombardier later on, for a total of 775 cars at a total cost of $1.54 billion. […] James Beno, directing business representative for an Oakland-based International Association of Machinists union lodge, urged the board to "take a few months to let this go back out to your best bidders." Representatives from the BlueGreen Alliance and the Courage Campaign said they've gathered thousands of petition signatures from BART riders and taxpayers urging the same. But many speakers from the business community urged the board to honor its own bid process, accept Bombardier's bid and move ahead without further delay. ‘Take the best product at the lowest price, that your process has determined will serve the riders of the Bay Area,’ said Paul Junge, the Oakland Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce's public policy director.” [Oakland Tribune, 5/10/12]

2013: Junge Was Somewhat Critical Of A Proposed Municipal Worker Strike, Saying “Times Have Been Difficult For More Than Government Workers.” Labor strikes may wreak havoc across the Bay Area this week,

Paul Junge (MI-08) Research Book | 48 but this is only a glimpse of the chaos to come, say union leaders representing tens of thousands of municipal and transit workers in Northern California. After five years of pay cuts, furloughs and reductions in vacation, sick time and pensions, union members who work for cities, counties and special districts say they're fed up and prepared to walk off their jobs, even at the risk of losing pay or getting fired, labor officials said. […] ‘Nobody's unsympathetic to people's desire to get pay increases. We all want that,’ said Paul Junge, who directs public policy for the Oakland Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce. ‘But I think it would be a mistake to say that only government workers have had hard times or made sacrifices over the past few years,’ he added. ‘Thousands of businesses have failed, thousands more have seen their profits and revenues decline, thousands of employees have lost their jobs in the private sector, or seen their hours cut back. Times have been difficult for more than government workers.’ The public should remember that Local 1021 members are part of the Bay Area, as well. They're neighbors, friends, relatives - all of whom pay taxes and contribute to their communities in myriad ways, he said. By paying them decent salaries, the entire community benefits, he said.” [San Francisco Chronicle, 6/30/13]

Early 2013: The City Of Oakland Was Considering Paying The California Highway Patrol To Police The City Of Oakland After An Initial Was Set To Expire. “The California Highway Patrol is willing to help police some of Oakland’s most dangerous streets for another three months, but this time it wants to be paid for its services, city officials said Tuesday. The CHP’s initial 90-day agreement to help Oakland’s undermanned police force expires at the end of this week. City officials had hoped that the CHP would continue providing officers free of charge, but those hopes were dashed last week when the City Council agreed to pay for similar help from the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office. ‘They do want to be paid because the (the sheriff’s office) is going to be paid,” OPD spokeswoman Johnna Watson said. CHP officials could not be reached for comment late Tuesday. Mayor Jean Quan said she was hopeful that state grants could be used to help cover some of the patrol costs going forward and that she would soon meet with the CHP about preserving the Oakland patrols. ‘This assistance came in a time of need, and this need still exits,’ she said in a prepared statement. Highway patrolmen began policing high-crime sections of Oakland in early November after city officials and a prominent minister asked Gov. Jerry Brown for help to combat the city’s surging crime rate.” [Mercury News, 1/29/13]

November 2019: Junge Launched His Campaign For MI-08. “The race to try to take on Democratic U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin in next year's general election grew by two candidates on Thursday, both of whom attacked her support of the impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump. Junge Accused Rep. Slotkin Of Supporting The More Liberal Wing OF The Democratic Party With Little Evidence. “Like Junge, she accused Slotkin of supporting the more liberal wing of the Democratic Party, even though Slotkin has voiced concerns about the potentially wide-reaching effects of sweeping environmental initiatives proposed in the House as well as throwing her support behind a program that would allow Medicare-style coverage to be made available as a public health care option rather than requiring a single government-run system for all Americans.” [Detroit Free Press, 11/14/19]

November 2019: The Detroit Free Press Noted That Junge Was Born In Michigan But Raised In California

November 2019: The Detroit Free Press Noted That Junge Was Born In Michigan But Raised In California. “Before returning to Michigan this year, Junge, who was born in Michigan but raised in California, served as a deputy district attorney in Ventura, California; a TV anchor on Fox 47 in Lansing; an investigative counsel for U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, and an external affairs adviser for U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services throughout 2018.” [Detroit Free Press, 11/14/19]

December 2019: The New York Times Noted That Junge Moved To Michigan To Run For Congress. ‘And Ms. Slotkin knew what to expect on Monday. In September, after she and six other so-called national security freshmen wrote an opinion article in The Washington Post calling for an impeachment inquiry, she faced much the same reception. She has already drawn several Republican challengers, including Paul Junge, a former TV anchor in Lansing, Mich., who worked for the Trump administration before moving back to Michigan to run.” [New York Times, 12/16/19]

December 2019: Junge Said That Impeachment Was Increasing Opposition To Rep. Slotkin

December 2019: Junge Said That Impeachment Was Increasing Opposition To Rep. Slotkin. “Slotkin said Monday that she was aware her choice may cost her reelection, but said the issue was too important to only do what is ‘politically expedient.’ The freshman Democrat has yet to draw a high-profile challenger for next year's election, though a number of lesser known contenders have already jumped in. One of them, former local television anchor Paul Junge, said impeachment was galvanizing discontent toward Slotkin, who had campaigned in 2018 as a moderate problem-solver. ‘She's not focusing on the things she said she would,’ Junge said. ‘As I travel around the district, I find that impeaching the president is something that people actively oppose. They want their votes to be respected.’” [Washington Post, 12/16/19]

January 2020: Junge Claimed His Campaign Had Raised Over $250,000; This Was Not True

January 2020: Junge Claimed His Campaign Had Raised Over $250,000; This Was Not True. “In an online article, WHMI-FM Howell, MI (1/9, 1K) reports that ‘former Lansing-area TV news anchor’ Paul Junge (R), who is seeking to take on freshman MI8 Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D) this fall, says his ‘campaign raised over $250,000’ in the little over six weeks since launching his campaign in mid-November. The report says that Junge, who ‘most recently worked in the Trump Administration at US Citizenship and Immigration Services,’ faces five other candidates in the GOP primary.” [The Frontrunner, 1/10/20]

John P. Junge, Junge’s Father, Moved To San Diego In 1974 When Paul Junge Was 8 Years Old. “A job with Rohr Industries lured John Junge to San Diego in 1974. In 1976 he began working in the military family housing maintenance business where he would dedicate the bulk of his career, ultimately acquiring and operating his own company, All Star Maintenance, which he oversaw until his retirement a few years ago. John lived most of his adult life in California but never forgot his Michigan roots.” [MLive Obituaries, 7/29/19]

February 2020: Junge Was Attacked By GOP Primary Opponents For His Lack Of Roots In MI-08

Junge Bragged About His Financial Resources At A Candidate Forum. “Really, the only thing that separated the five Republicans seeking to face U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D-Holly) during tonight's Livingston County candidate forum was that Paul Junge has financial resources. And, as his opponents pointed out, lacks the roots in the district they have. Roughly 500 Republicans filled a Crystal Gardens Banquet Center ballroom to hear Junge flag the $273,000 he raised last year compared to the $12,000 the other four raised combined as the reason why he's in the best position to face the freshman Democratic congresswoman in November. The former TV personality also is the only Republican in the competitive 8th Congressional District to be a part of the National Republican Campaign Committee's Young Guns program for hitting certain goals. ‘I can tell you that I'm the only candidate up on this dais with the financial resources to answer the attacks to help us win this seat back,’ Junge said. ‘Ladies and gentlemen, we'd all be Republican votes, but we'll need financial resources to beat Elissa Slotkin.’” [Lansing City Pulse, 2/21/20]

Junge Was Criticized By Primary Opponents For His Sporadic Residence In MI-08. “The proclamation during yesterday's nearly two-hour forum put a target on his back. Real estate agent Mike Detmer called out Junge for being a sporadic resident of the 8th Congressional District. He also said whoever wins the primary will have money coming in from local, state and national Republican interests. ‘But to say, 'I'm the best candidate for the job because I raised $275,000 when $150,000 of that is his own money and the rest was frontloaded from family, friends and business associates in California?’ Detmer said. ‘You don't own a home. You don't have a business. You don't work here. You don't live here. You don't live here. It's absurd.’ The line got the loudest applause of the night from the decidedly pro-Detmer crowd. Attorney Kristina Lyke got in the final jab of the night when she said, ‘I didn't move here to run for this race. I am your neighbor. I built my business here and I'm dedicated to this district.’” [Lansing City Pulse, 2/21/20]

April 2020: Junge Claimed He Was No Longer Personally Soliciting Donations Due To The COVID-19 Pandemic

April 2020: Junge Claimed He Was No Longer Personally Soliciting Donations Due To The COVID-19 Pandemic. “Paul Junge of Brighton, who is running in the GOP primary in a bid to take on Slotkin, is still making calls to residents whose support he hopes to win but no longer soliciting donations. Some don't want to talk politics anymore, he said. ‘Personally, I don't make an ask anymore. I'm calling really to keep in touch with people, to hear how things are going for them. To express interest and support in what they're facing,’ Junge said. ‘...Some people, all their focus right now is, I've got to save my business, or I've got to save my finances, so I can make sure my family is in good shape.’ As a first-time candidate, Junge was planning on local party events such as pancake breakfasts and the Republican women's forum to help spread the word about his campaign. Those events have been canceled.” [The Detroit News, 4/15/20]

Junge Said That He Believed That Trump’s Conduct In Ukraine “Hardly Rises To An Impeachable Offense.” “He said he was a supporter of Trump's and that he took Trump's remarks to Zelensky as part of a ‘broad discussion about looking into corruption.’ He added that different people might have different views on that, but said even if Trump did something ‘mildly inappropriate, it hardly rises to an impeachable offense.’” [Detroit Free Press, 11/14/19]

2020: Junge Accused Gov. Whitmer Of Hiring “Partisan Democrat Firms” To Help With COVID-19 Response Efforts. “It is extremely alarming that the Governor ever thought it was permissible to hire not one, but two, partisan Democrat firms to help with Michigan's coronavirus response efforts. Through this scandal, Elissa Slotkin, who constantly criticizes President Trump has remained silent. Why? Because her campaign is using some of the same political firms under the guise of health check ups on seniors. We deserve better.” [Paul Junge for Congress, Facebook, 4/24/20]

Junge Accused Gov. Whitmer Of “Circumventing The Competitive Bid Process” In Awarding A Contract To A Data Firm. “Yesterday, Governor Whitmer cancelled the $200,000 contract with a data firm with strong ties to Democratic political campaigns. Whitmer hired the company circumventing the competitive bid process to collect data related to the coronavirus. Elissa Slotkin recently boasted on her accounts that she using the same firm to “transform” her campaign volunteers into “wellness checkers” for seniors. Slotkin has paid the firm over $20,000 in less than two years. Michiganders deserve elected officials who avoid any appearance of collecting sensitive healthcare data for political purposes. Abortion & Women’s Health Issues

Significant Findings

✓ Junge implied that he supported overturning Roe v. Wade and said that rights it protected were “made up.”

✓ Junge said that he was Pro-Life “At All Times”

✓ Junge claimed that Virginia Governor Ralph Northam supported killing children.

✓ Junge did not support any funding for Planned Parenthood.

✓ Junge did not support Oakland County, MI funding Planned Parenthood, despite the fact that the funds went toward Title X Activities, which do not include abortions.

Roe v. Wade

Junge Called Roe v. Wade “That Federal Court Decision,” Implied That It Should Be Overturned, And The Right To Privacy “Made Up.” “And let me say one other thing, because of course one of our biggest obstacles is that federal court decision, which makes the reelection of President Trump, so that he can continue to appoint federal judges that will adhere to the Constitution instead of made up rights like we see in Roe v. Wade.” [Howell, MI Debate, 2/20/20]

Junge Said That That Reelecting Trump And Keeping The Senate Was Key For Federal Court Appointments, Implying They Were Essential To Overturning Roe v. Wade. And one more, besides the desperate need to reelect President Trump, the Senate has to confirm those judges. Let’s elect John James, so we have another vote to make sure we get those judges confirmed.” [Howell, MI Debate, 2/20/20]

Junge Falsely Claimed That Virginia Governor Ralph Northam Supported Killing Children

Junge Claimed That Virginia Governor Ralph Northam Supported Killing Children. “I said in my opening statement that we can see what happens Democrats take control. We see in Virginia where’s there’s a governor who says after a live birth he would have a discussion with the mother whether to end the life of that baby. The question

Paul Junge (MI-08) Research Book | 90 talks about not providing medical care to help a baby that has survived an attempted abortion. [Howell, MI Debate, 2/20/20]

These Claims Were False. “Trump was talking about comments Northam made in late January, when he was asked during a filmed radio interview about an abortion bill before the Virginia House of Delegates. The governor’s comments were confusing, and some took them, at the time, as an endorsement of infanticide. But the governor has said that he was ‘absolutely not’ talking about infanticide — and in any case, the Virginia bill would certainly not allow doctors to ‘execute’ a baby after it’s born.” [Vox, 2/12/19]

Junge Categorically Stated That He Did Not Support Funding For Planned Parenthood. “If I am a Federal legislator, I will support life, I will not be funding Planned Parenthood.” [Howell, MI Debate, 2/20/20]

Junge Said That He Opposed The Oakland County, MI Commission From Funding Planned Parenthood To Provide Reproductive Health Care Services

Junge Said That He Opposed The Oakland County, MI Commission From Funding Planned Parenthood. “We can see what Democrats do when they take control even right here in the State of Michigan. The Oakland County Commission just last election cycle, for the first time in a long time, by just one vote flipped to 11-10 control by the Democrats. What did they do? They took $500,000 of Oakland County taxpayer money and gave it to Planned Parenthood. If I am a Federal legislator, I will support life, I will not be funding Planned Parenthood.” [Howell, MI Debate, 2/20/20]

The Funding Was Provided Under Title X, Which Provided Reproductive Health Care Services, Not Including Abortion, To Low Income Individuals. “The Oakland County Board of Commissioners has approved $500,000 for Title X reproductive health care services in Oakland County through Planned Parenthood. The board says it took the action as a result of new rules imposed by the Trump Administration. Title X is a federal program that provides family planning and reproductive health care services to low-income individuals, including preventative services, breast and cervical cancer screenings, treatment of STIs, education, counseling and contraception.” [WXYZ Detroit, 12/18/19]

The Judge In The Case Called Junge’s Actions “Highly Inappropriate” And Declared A Mistrial. “Paul Junge were ‘highly inappropriate,’ Judge Edward F. Brodie ruled that the defense was not harmed by the prosecutor's conduct.

2013: Junge Supported An Agreement That Would Contract The California Highway Patrol To Provide Law Enforcement For The City Of Oakland

Mayor

Jean Quan said she was hopeful that state grants could be used to help cover some of the patrol costs going forward and that she would soon meet with the CHP about preserving the Oakland patrols.

May 2013: The Oakland City Council Voted To Pay Over $500,000 For The CHP To Continue Its Patrols Of Oakland. “The short-staffed Oakland Police Department will continue to get help patrolling the streets from the California Highway Patrol. Late Tuesday night, the Oakland City Council voted to pay more than $500,000 for the CHP to continue its extra patrols in high crime areas. Not only will the extra patrols continue, but the presence of the CHP will actually increase. 10 officers and two sergeants will be deployed four days a week instead of two.” [LPIX, 5/8/13]

2011-2012: Junge Was A Staunch Opponent Of Occupy Oakland Protests While Working At The Oakland, CA Chamber Of Commerce

‘We are seeing serious losses of business,’ Junge

Paul Junge (MI-08) Research Book | 103 said.

What is clear is that in Oakland, city and business leaders are on one side, with protesters and a variety of supporters, such as unions, on the other.

At the recent anti-repression rally, they staged a silent counter-protest, standing on the steps of City Hall, staring down the shouting Occupiers right in front of them. Occupiers gleefully pointed me to one official from the Oakland Chamber of Commerce, Paul Junge, in the crowd, as good reason to dismiss the counter-protesters as corporatists and agents of the 1 percent.” [National Review, 3/5/12]

The idea that you can sic the police on your neighbor because you think they shouldn’t get a gun, it’s kinda scary. I would look at a proposal I suppose, but it’s just hard to imagine. Steele Claimed That Earlier Projections Regarding COVID-19 Were “Completely Wrong”

Paul Junge (MI-08) Research Book | 111 of everything having to do with both worldwide and having to do with various countries and for various things, mortality, infections, disabilities and so forth, we found that the original theories and projections, hypotheses were completely wrong and now we have a lot of data to show that’s the case” [COVID Q&A Happy Hour With Dr. Rob Steele, 4:12, 5/14/20]

Earlier Projections Were Partially Inaccurate Due To The Strong Effects Of Social Distancing And Preventative Measures Put In Place. “Banning gatherings, having people stay at home, closing schools, and other measures to reduce the spread of Covid-19 are working so well that an influential model of the pandemic’s course now projects that the number of U.S deaths from the new coronavirus by early August will be 60,415 rather than the minimum of 100,000 that it forecast last month. […]The earlier projection of Covid-19 deaths — 100,000 — from modelers at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington assumed there would be broad adoption of “social distancing,” which is also how China broke the back of the epidemic that began in . But the effect of that social distancing has been greater than the IHME team expected.” [STAT News, 4/9/20]

Steele Claimed “Testing Is No More Important For Opening Up The Economy Than It’d Be In A Bad Flu Season; This Was False

After flattening the curve, the next step is to box the virus in by implementing four essential actions – test, isolate, contact trace, and quarantine. All are crucial; if any one is weak, the virus can escape and spread explosively again.” [Tom Frieden, House Appropriations Committee, 5/6/20]

‘I think it is the worst pandemic since 1918,’ said Cecile Viboud, an epidemiologist at the National Institutes of Health’s Fogarty International Center, alluding to the ‘Great Influenza’ pandemic that claimed an estimated 675,000 lives in the United States.’” [Washington Post, 4/28/20]

But even older people who get this disease their death rate is still low, I mean low, 10% or whatever. [COVID Q&A Happy Hour With Dr. Rob Steele, 28:53, 5/14/20]

2013: Junge Was Somewhat Critical Of A Proposed Municipal Worker Strike, Saying “Times Have Been Difficult For More Than Government Workers.” Labor strikes may wreak havoc across the Bay Area this week, but this is only a glimpse of the chaos to come, say union leaders representing tens of thousands of municipal and transit workers in Northern California.
