Junge claims roots in the State of Michigan, but has spent the vast majority of his life outside the state. Junge’s family moved to California when he was 8 years old and he attended high school, college, and law school there. In total, Junge only spent 10 years of his life in Michigan (mostly as a young child) and 43 years outside of it. Junge’s father later established a scholarship at the University of Michigan, his alma mater, which Junge would not have been eligible for as a Californian. One of Junge’s first jobs was the San Diego office manager for Senator Pete Wilson, which he began shortly after his father contributed $2,000 to Wilson’s 1988 reelection bid. Junge Was A Failed California Lawyer Who Endangered Victims Of Domestic Abuse. Junge became a Deputy District Attorney in Ventura County, CA in 1994. Junge’s incompetence became the subject of news coverage in the Los Angeles Times later that year when he barged into a meeting between a public defender and a victim of domestic violence to serve a subpoena. Junge’s rash action caused the case to be ruled a mistrial and for charges to be nearly dropped against the victim’s accused abuser. While the case was ultimately retried in a new trial, Junge was removed from the case and ended his employment with the Ventura DA’s Office in early 1995. Junge Was A TV Anchor Who Spent Little Time In Michigan. After his debacle at the Ventura DA’s office, Junge decided to take his talents elsewhere and proceeded to begin a decade of wandering from state to state, working as a local TV anchor in Colorado, Arkansas, Missouri, and even for a short time in Michigan. Junge Continued To Wander From Job To Job, Working The Chamber Of Commerce In California, Which Opposed The ACA. Junge decided once again to change his career path, and took a job with the Oakland (California) Chamber of Commerce where he supported outsourcing manufacturing to Canada and supported heavy State law enforcement presence on the streets of Oakland. Junge took a job with the California Chamber of Commerce next, which had recently opposed the state ACA Exchange signed into law by Governor Schwarzenegger. Junge then found himself on the other side of the country, serving as the President of the St. Mary’s County, Maryland Chamber of Commerce in an exurb of Washington, DC. Junge Spread Misinformation During A Pandemic Junge Helped Perpetuate Dangerous Misinformation Regarding COVID-19. As part of a virtual campaign event, Junge hosted Michigan GOP operative and doctor Robert Steele to discuss the COVID-19 Pandemic. In this event with the attentive ear of Junge, Steele proceeded to peddle a series of falsehoods regarding the pandemic. Steele equated COVID-19 to the seasonal flu, despite the overwhelming scientific consensus that this was not the case. Steele downplayed the important role of testing in getting states reopened, again flying in the face of accepted scientific reality. Steele also accused frontline medical professionals of inflating COVID-19 statistics, something Dr. Anthony Fauci has categorically stated is not occurring. Junge Expressed Skepticism Regarding Immunizations And Showed Ignorance Of Medical Fact. Just before COVID-19 lockdowns in early 2020, Junge expressed skepticism at a campaign event about the effectiveness of some vaccines and stated that there should be some exceptions for making them mandatory. Junge also falsely claimed that HPV is not a communicable disease and that universal immunization for that disease did not make medical sense. 1 A Compendium of the Findings of the Obama PCAST Ad Hoc Subgroup on Pandemic Preparedness and Response December 23, 2020 Introduction A subset of the former members of President Obama’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (here OPCAST)—ten individuals who played particularly important roles in producing the six OPCAST reports between 2009 and 2016 that dealt with issues related to pandemic preparedness and response1—came together starting in March of this year to consider how insights from those studies might be combined with more recent research and current observations to develop suggestions about how the U.S. response to the COVID-19 pandemic could be improved. The Subgroup has produced six reports, addressing • the national strategic pandemic-response stockpile (May 20) • the role of contact tracing (June 18) • the role of public health data in controlling the spread of COVID-19 (July 28) • testing for the pathogen (August 18) • recommendations for the coming COVID-19 commission (September 21) • needs for improved epidemiological modeling (September 28) Each report was distributed, upon completion, to selected members of the Trump COVID-19 team and the Biden campaign staff, selected governors and members of Congress, selected public health experts outside government, and the media. The reports have also been posted on the OPCAST team’s website, http://opcast.org, together with a few opinion pieces based on them. In the current volume, we have assembled all six reports in full, preceded by a set of brief summaries. Four of the reports are followed by short updates taking account of developments since the reports first came out.

  • IHP News 559 : “Public Enemy Number One”
IHP news 559 : “Public enemy number one” ( 14 February 2020) The weekly International Health Policies (IHP) newsletter is an initiative of the Health Policy unit at the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp, Belgium. Dear Colleagues, I know, I know, it’s Valentine today, so I probably shouldn’t talk about the eerily sounding “Covid- 19” in this short intro, let alone about the even more dreaded “P word” but WHO and dr. Tedros were clearly in no mood for Valentine earlier this week, when describing the virus as “a global threat, potentially worse than terrorism”. “The world must wake up and consider this enemy virus as public enemy number one,” Tedros said. With world media and public opinion going berserk all around the world for a few weeks now, I think that shouldn’t be too much of a problem. The other part of his message, however, that it’s about "solidarity, solidarity and solidarity", might prove much harder in the weeks and months to come, given how Sapiens is wired. When thinking of pandemics, in this visual culture of ours, we probably all have (subconsciously or not) a particular movie in mind when considering some of the most dire scenarios. For some of you, that might be “Contagion”, for me, it’s no doubt “Twelve Monkeys” (1995), with among others, Bruce Willis, a stunning Madeleine Stowe and a young Brad Pitt. Back in the innocent ‘90s, it all felt a bit surreal, even the obligatory rogue scientist popping up towards the end. But what a great movie! Now in the year 2020, with the scary ongoing public health experiment (aka ‘the coronavirus cruise ship quarantines’), occasionally I get the feeling that “Twelve Monkeys” is being mixed up with “the Poseidon Adventure” .

“GUTTURAL GERMAN”: HERBERT MARCUSE, THE MEDIA, AND STUDENT RADICALISM IN SAN DIEGO DURING THE 1960S _______________ A Thesis Presented to the Faculty of San Diego State University _______________ In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts in History _______________ by Beauregard B. Bennett Spring 2017 iii Copyright © 2017 by Beauregard B. Bennett All Rights Reserved iv DEDICATION For all the women in my life. The ones who raised me, nurtured me, supported me, loved me and endured me. Thanks for believing in me, even when I don’t believe in myself. And a special dedication for the young lady who I haven’t met yet, this work is for you all! v ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS “Guttural German”: Herbert Marcuse, the Media, and Student Radicalism in San Diego During the 1960s by Beauregard B. Bennett Master of Arts in History San Diego State University, 2017 Many university campuses in the United States experienced increased levels of unrest during the 1960s. San Diego universities also contributed to facets of student rebellion nationally and globally. Arguably, no one figure became such a polarizing and inspiring icon of the 1960s as UCSD’s Professor Herbert Marcuse. Guttural German seeks to uncover the roots of Marcuse’s controversial dismissal from UCSD while exploring the factors motivating his most vocal critics. Guttural German utilizes secondary source material that contextualizes the detractors of Marcuse and traces their history of opposition towards contrarian thought in the region. Additionally, Guttural German relies heavily primary sources from The San Diego Union, as well as archival material originating from SDSU Library Special Collections, letters and transcripts from (Dean of San Diego Journalism) Harold Keen’s collected papers; and documents from the Gwartney American Legion and Anti-Communism Collection at SDSU.

The BOH inclusion of an exemption for medical reasons provides an illogical loophole big enough for the Queen Mary. Nobody with an actual respiratory health issue is going to be maskless out in public and run the risk of encountering some asymptomatic anti‐masker. Responsible businesses include an option for curbside service for those who don’t want to comply with the mask requirement. The choice to enter a business includes the responsibility to adhere to the safety policies of that business. Smoking or going naked are not tolerated by businesses, going maskless shouldn’t be either. Employees maybe exposed to scores or hundreds of customers each day. Gallatin County’s positivity rate all but insures that the typical service industry employee will encounter people who are infected.

On Being Faithful Guidelines for a Shared Discernment on the Way Ahead in this Season of COVID-19 But now thus says the Lord, he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior. Do not remember the former things, or consider the things of old. I am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. [Isaiah 43:1,3,18-19] Preface Little did we know when the forty days of Lent began, that we would end the season in quarantine, either self-imposed, as if in a kind of strict Lenten fast, or enforced by guidelines promoted to protect public health and safety. From the forty (Latin: quaranta) days of Lent we have passed through the remembrance of Christ’s saving death and glorious resurrection into the fifty days of the Easter season, sure that Jesus Christ is risen, but still wondering when it might be safe for us to emerge from our own ‘tombs’ into the light of a new day. The new day has come, but we would do well to acknowledge that it is of a different kind and order, and one which no longer holds any certainty in this COVID-19 world. In this unwelcome season of the COVID-19 virus, we find ourselves living through a period of volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity, or, for short, a VUCA season.
