APRIL 2021 Why Should We Go to Confession Day? NEPSIS

Several years ago, I stopped scheduling Lenten retreats for our parish. Frankly, I 2021 didn't think we were getting our money's worth: it was expensive to bring speakers here, and not many of us attended the retreats. In their place I decided to focus on Parish Council the essential element of Lent, repentance. Why not give everyone a chance to attend to the of confession? This is the meaning and purpose of Lent, Peter Manolakos President why not do it rather than hire someone to talk about it? Thomas Anthis Jr. Why should we go to Confession Day? Because of the great opportunities! Vice President

Christopher Shiomos, OD Confession Day gives us the opportunity to live the gospels and commemorations Secretary we have at this time of year. When we look at the gospels and commemorations around Lent - the Pharisee and the Publican, the Prodigal Son, the Holy Cross, Michael Copanas Saint Mary of Egypt - we see that they all point to one thing, repentance. The Treasurer

Prodigal returned to the father, and we should too. Mary of Egypt went into the desert to repent, and we should too. The paralytic (read on the second Sunday of Robert Allen Lent) received healing when his sins were forgiven by our Lord. Repentance. Nicholas Anastasiou Repentance is the removal of the layers between you and God, and confession is Joy Weatherup Anthis the naming of those layers, which brings about their removal. The layers are the Stephanie Armatas enemy, and it is never a bad thing to destroy the enemy of our souls. Dimitrios Kiritsis Eleni Kosmas, MD Confession Day gives everyone an opportunity to talk to a priest one-on-one. We George Nardone James Telonis, MD rarely get a chance to do that. What bothers you? What have you always wondered about? What sin comes back to your memory again and again? When I go to confession I always have something on my mind, and confession gives me a chance Honorary to talk about it with my spiritual father. Sure, I talk about my sins (that's why I'm Board Member there, after all), but there are always other issues that I want a second opinion James Sakezles about.

Confession Day gives everyone the opportunity to talk to a different priest than me. I invite a native Greek-speaking priest to join me that day - not only for those who would like to confess in Greek, but also for those who don't want to come to me. That makes sense. When I was a layman I was very friendly with our priest. I didn't VISIT THE like going to him for confession, so I told him I wanted to go to someone else. Why? It wasn't that I was embarrassed about the sins I had to confess, but that our PARISH WEBSITE relationship was different than I would have with a confessor. stsophias.org

Confession Day gives everyone the opportunity to feel the weight of sin lifted away. It's about drawing closer to God, and the joy of forgiveness.

Confession Day is April 3 from 10 am - 1 pm. There will be plenty of space for safe distancing, and please remember to bring your mask. I look forward to seeing you Saturday!

Your affectionate servant, Father David P a g e 2 N E P S I S

PRESIDENT ’ S M E SS AGE

Dear Parish,

At 5:27 am this morning, Spring arrived. The sun is shining in a cloudless sky, the temperature is 63 degrees, and it is the Sunday of . There were 96 people at today's , and we have not seen so many people receive the Eucharist since before Covid.

After church, parishioners wearing masks lingered on the steps and in the driveway. Despite all the conflicting noise coming from the "experts", a sense of relief filled the air. Yes, we will continue to abide by all the official mandates and guidelines to keep people safe. But once given the clearance, we will also provide opportunities for our parishioners to engage with each other in meaningful activities that support our Church.

To that end, June 10 - 13 are the dates of our second drive thru festival. This year we have more time to prepare for our event so we are expanding the menu in order to accommodate demand. Net income from the full festival has been averaging $160,000 over the last three years. Last year's drive thru generated $40,000. The difference of $120,000 was replaced by the $130,000 we raised in our Carry Us Across Campaign. So we enter 2021 financially unscathed by Covid.

On a much brighter note, St Sophia's has received a very substantial legacy gift. Eleanor Theodore ,who recently went to sleep in the Lord, loved this church. She served on the Parish Council for decades working tirelessly for its benefit. She provided pro bono legal counsel to the church and was a generous steward and donor while she lived.

Eleanor, to no great surprise, remembered St Sophia's upon her passing. She left us a gift of $250,000 which is legally restricted for capital improvements to our building and grounds. While we cannot use this money to offset any operating costs, it will provide us the wherewithal to repair and improve our physical plant without taxing our annual income. This stunning gift of love from a person who was dedicated to St Sophia's is an example to ponder.

Holy Week comes in late April. As I mentioned early in this message, more people are now coming to church. Palm Sunday, Good Friday, and Pascha are usually well attended. Right now we have capacity in the nave of the church of 100. We may be able to increase that to 125 by opening up the choir loft. But registration becomes VERY IMPORTANT when church attendance soars. You must register for services. If our registration list is at full capacity, anyone who comes who is not registered will not be seated in the church. We will have overflow capacity in the chapel and the lobby. We will do our BEST to accommodate everyone. But please register, either online or by calling the office, so that we can create sufficient overflow space.

Lent, as you know, is a time of preparation. We prepare for the singular event of human history. We prepare to witness the Resurrection of our Lord. The Great Passion unfolds in front of us in the Holy Week services. From the Hosannas of Palm Sunday to the Lamentations of Good Friday, we try to fully grasp what happened 2000 years ago. In May we will sing the Hymn of the Risen Christ. But first we must walk along what is now called the Via Dolorosa, carrying the tree they hung him on, anticipating God's Glory on earth.

Yours in Christ, Peter Manolakos Parish Council President P a g e 6 N E P S I S

Agia Lavra

The Tale of two Georges From Dimitsana

Built on the mountainous slope in central Pelloponese, Dimitsana played a vital role in the revolution of 1821 being a major supplier of gunpowder to the Greek cause with its fourteen gunpowder plants.

Born Georgios Gotzias on March 25, 1771 Germanos III of old Patras (Παλαιών Πατροών Γερμανός) was Metropolitan of Patras in 1821 when on March 25, 1821, on the Feast of the Annunciation, he proclaimed the national uprising against the Ottoman Empire. At the monastery of Agia Lavra near Kalavrita he raised the banner and performed the swearing in of the revolutionaries to the adage of “Freedom or Death’ (Ελευθερία ἥ Θάνατος).

Gregory the V, born Georgios Angelopoulos in 1746 in Dimitsana, was Patriarch of Constantinople in 1821 when the news of the revolt in Greece became known to the Ottoman Sultan Mahmud II. He immediately blamed the Patriarch and forced him to condemn the Greek revolutionary activities in order to protect the large Greek population in Constantinople and surrounding areas.

The Greek rebels scored several successes in the Pelloponese, infuriating the Sultan who ordered the abduction of Patriarch Gregory from the Patriarchal cathedral after the Pascha Sunday Celebration of April 22, 1821. He was martyred two days later and a bloody massacre of the Greek population in and around Constantinople ensued.

The brutal execution of Gregory the V, especially on Easter Sunday, infuriated people around the world and stimulated the Philhellenic movement that proved crucial in the following decade.

The brave actions of Metropolitan Germanos ironically resulted in the tragic martyrdom of his Patriarch. Both were heroes from the small town of Dimitsana. Patriarch Gregory was commemorated as an ethno martyr and later canonized by the Greek Orthodox Church; his Name Day is celebrated on April 10th.

St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Bicentennial Committee for the Celebration of Greek Independence Day

Below is the correction of The Krifo Scholio article which appeared in the March 2021 Nepsis

Where appeared as “Amartolous” the correct word is “Armatolous. In Greek is Αρματωλοί

The word Armatolous is the plural of Armatoles. They were Christian irregular militia under the Sultan’s authority in areas of Greece which were difficult for Ottoman authority to govern.

They were enforcing the law according to their desires and eventually together with the Kleftes, they became the nucleus of the Greek fighting forces for the war of Greek Independence. N E P S I S P a g e 9

PHILOPTOCHOS NEWS

Dear Members of Philoptochos, Parishioners and Friends of St. Sophia,

Repentance – that’s what Lent is all about. Sounds like a bit of a bummer. But it’s really not. Repentance is simply turning toward God. I think we all know that turning toward God is literally a saving grace!

Forgiveness – is the release of resentment or anger. Without forgiveness we can have no peace.

St. Nicholas of Cabasilas says on speaking of forgiveness,

“Of the many things which impede our salvation, the greatest of all is that when we commit any transgression we do not at once turn back to God and ask forgiveness. Because we feel shame and fear we think that the way back to God is difficult, and that He is angry and ill-tempered towards us, and that there is need of great preparation if we wish to approach Him. But the loving-kindness of God utterly banishes this thought from the soul. What can prevent anyone who clearly knows how kind He is and that, as it is said, while you are speaking He will say, ‘Here I am,’ from approaching Him at once for pardon of the sins which he has committed?”

Take advantage of St. Sophia’s Confession Day, Saturday, April 3 from 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

High school seniors! Philoptochos, St. Sophia and Armatas Scholarship applications are now available. Please call the church office to have the applications emailed or sent to you. You may also download the application from the church website, www.stsophias.org. The completed application along with all required documents must be received on or before Friday, June 4 by 5:00 p.m.

The Philoptochos has tried, during this pandemic, to continue its mission to reach out to our church community and our local, national and international communities, as we are able. The Lord is clear in His direction on inheriting the Kingdom:

“Come, you blessed of my Father inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: for I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited me; I was in prison and you came to Me . . . inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren you did it to Me.” Matthew 25.35-40

We pray that the pandemic is waning and that we may all be together again in the not-too- distant future. We look forward to the time when we might hug each other again and chat with each other during coffee hour and to continue living in the fullness of this life which God has granted us.

Kali Sarakosti. Have a blessed Lent.

GREAT LENT HOLY WEEK & PASCHA

Μεγάλη Τεσσαρακοστή Μεγάλη Εβδομάδα & Πάσχα

If the Son of God had not come down from heaven we should have had no hope of going up to heaven. If He had not become incarnate, suffered in the flesh, risen and as- cended for our sake, we should not have known God's surpassing love for us. If He had not taken flesh and endured the passion while we were still ungodly, we should not have de- sisted from the pride which so often lifts us up and drags us down. Now that we have been exalted without contributing anything, we stay humble, and as we regard with understand- ing the greatness of God's promise and benevolence we grow in humility; from which comes salvation.
