Annual Report FY 2007 Robin Boehler Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle Annual Report FY 2007 Robin Boehler Richard Fruchter From the Leadership 2006 was the year no organization wants to have. Late in the afternoon of July 28, an armed gunman forced his way into our offices, leaving destruction and fear in his wake. Within minutes, our campaign director Pam Waechter was dead, five others seriously wounded, and our community was unimaginably and forever altered. Emergency and medical personnel, donors and strangers, volunteers and partner agencies, elected officials and corporations all came to our aid generously, quickly and selflessly. Thankfully the healing was made easier by the heartfelt and generous response from the community locally, nationally and internationally. Recovery was slow but steady. By the end of the fiscal year, we had much to feel blessed about. WITHIN HOUrs, Richard was on the scene from Minneapolis, two weeks before his tenure as CEO was to begin. Thanks to the commitment and caliber of our volunteer leaders, led by Robin and our committed staff, who worked seemingly 24 hours a day for the next few weeks, Richard was able to hit the ground running and respond effectively to this chaotic situation. AFTER MUCH SOUL-SEarCHING, we decided to rebuild our Third Avenue offices. The Brick by Brick Building Campaign was launched and ultimately raised over $1 million for rebuilding. OUR COMMUNITY DINNER in September, just two months after the attack, attracted 1,300 people, nearly doubling any previous attendance record. We were especially blessed with the attendance of survivors and their families who were still physically and mentally recovering. STATE ELECTED OffICIals noted the seriousness of this hate crime and the threat of others and allocated $900,000 for security improvements in the Jewish community. THE REOPENING of our offices just seven months later—after a down-to-the-studs rebuilding— was incredibly heart-warming and healing. The space continues to provide our extraordinary staff a productive environment that enables us all to continue our important work. AND DESPITE the greatly diminished staffing and through the generosity of the community, we raised our annual campaign total to $6.2 million, ensuring that our dire straits did not detract from Federation’s ability to meet the needs of others in our community. Saying, “When given lemons, make lemonade,” seems trite and understated, but it contains the right sentiment. This community made lemonade like you wouldn’t believe. And after this troubling year, we are looking to the future for continued healing, community understanding, growing partnerships and moving together from strength to strength within this community. Warmly, Robin Boehler Richard Fruchter 2007 Board of Trustees, Chair President & CEO 1 Board of Trustees and Awards Board of Trustees Albert Israel Jewish Federation of Greater Chair Naomi Newman Robin Boehler Seattle Board Chair’s Award: Peter Rettman Ron Leibsohn Bernice Rind The Board Chair’s Award for Executive Committee Tana Senn Outstanding Service is the Secretary David Ellenhorn Federation’s most prestigious Ex Officio recognition.
