YEATS TO THE MEMBERS OF THE NATIONAL LITERARY SOCIETY OF DUBLIN AND THE IRISH LITERARY SOCIETY OF LONDON PREFACE I HAVE not found it possible to revise this book as completely as I should have wished. I have corrected a bad mistake of a copyist, and added a few pages of new verses towards the end, and softened some phrases in the introduction which seemed a little petulant in form, and written in a few more to describe writers who have appeared during the last four years, and that is about all. I compiled it towards the end of a long indignant argument, carried on in the committee rooms of our literary societies, and in certain newspapers between a few writers of our new movement, who judged Irish literature by literary standards, and a number of people, a few of whom were writers, who judged it by its patriotism and by its political effect; and I hope my opinions may have value as part of an argument which may awaken again. The Young Ireland writers wrote to give the peasantry a literature in English in place of the literature they were losing with Gaelic, and these methods, which have shaped the literary thought of Ireland to our time, could not be the same as the methods of a movement which, so far as it is more than an instinctive expression of certain moods of the soul, endeavours to create a reading class among the more leisured classes, which will preoccupy itself with Ireland and the needs of Ireland. -

First edition of Algren’s rare first book which served as the genesis for A Walk on the Wild Side (1956). Signed by Algren on the title page and additionally inscribed by him at a later date (1978) on the front free endpaper: “For Christine and Robert Liska from Nelson Algren June 1978”. Algren has incorporated a drawing of a cat in his inscription. Nelson Ahlgren Abraham was born in Detroit in 1909, and later adopted a modified form of his Swedish grandfather’s name. He grew up in Chicago, and earned a B.A. in Journalism from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 1931. In 1933, he moved to Texas to find work, and began his literary career living in a derelict gas station. A short story, “So Help Me”, was accepted by Story magazine and led to an advance of $100.00 for his first book. -

NEWS Number 26: Winter 2006 2006 marked the centenary of the death of the Norwegian poet and playwright Henrik Ibsen. In September, the Library, along with cultural institutions in many countries around the world participated in the international centenary celebration of this hugely influential writer with a number of Ibsen-related events including Portraits of Ibsen, an exhibition of a series of 46 oil paintings by Haakon Gullvaag, one of Norway’s leading contemporary artists, and Writers in Conversation an event held in the Library’s Seminar Room at which RTÉ broadcaster Myles Dungan interviewed the acclaimed Norwegian writer Lars Saabye Christensen. During both September and October, the Library hosted a series of lunchtime readings by the Dublin Lyric Players exploring themes in Ibsen’s writings, and drawing on his Leabharlann Náisiúnta na hÉireann poetry and prose as well as his plays. A series of lunchtime lectures looked at Ibsen’s influence on Irish writers and his impact upon aspects of the Irish Revival. National Library of Ireland The Portraits of Ibsen exhibition coincided with the 4-day State Visit to Ireland by Their Majesties King Harald V and Queen Sonja of Norway. On 19 September, Her Majesty Queen Sonja visited the Library to officially open the Portraits of Ibsen NUACHT exhibition, to visit Yeats: the life and works of William Butler Yeats and also to view a number of Ibsen-related exhibits from the Library’s collections; these included The Quintessence of Ibsenism by George Bernard Shaw (1891), Ibsen’s New Drama by James Joyce (1900); Padraic Colum’s copy of the Prose Dramas of Ibsen, given as a gift to WB Yeats, and various playbills for Dublin performances of Ibsen. -

H. van den Beuken 15 June 2017 Engelse Taal en Cultuur Radboud University Nijmegen Romp /2 Abstract This research will answer the question: in what ways does the poetry written by Francis Ledwidge in the wake of the Easter Rising reflect a changing stance on his role as an Irish soldier in the First World War? Guy Beiner’s notion of triumphalist memory of trauma will be employed in order to analyse this. Ledwidge’s status as a war poet will also be examined by applying Terry Phillips’ definition of war poetry. By remembering the Irish soldiers who decided to fight in the First World War, new light will be shed on a period in Irish history that has hitherto been subjected to national amnesia. This will lead to more complete and inclusive Irish identities. This thesis will argue that Ledwidge’s sentiments with regards to the war changed multiple times during the last year of his life. He is, arguably, an embodiment of the conflicting loyalties and tensions in Ireland at the time of the Easter Rising. The opening chapter is entitles “The Peot and the Milieu, in which his early friends like Daniel Jones, E.W.Ted Lock, Pamela Hangfold Johnson, George Baker, G.S. Prasad, Edith Sitwell, Henry Gibson, Elder Olson who were to find a place and their impact on his writings. The second chapter entitled “The Creative Genius of the Poet” attempts to examine Thomas’ achievement as a poet. The third chapter is entitled “Dylan Thomas’ Imagery and Symbolism”. His writings are interspersed with myths and allusions from classical as well as Renaissance Literature through the present day. The fourth chapter of Dylan Thomas is ”The craftsmanship and the Poet”, attempts to examine the influence of the Bardic tradition. The concluding chapter sums up the observations made in the preceding chapters. The chapter deals with my assessment of the poet’s work besides certain evaluations made by significant writers. I. The Poet And The Milieu Dylan Thomas expresses not only his poignant ideas but also displays the milieu and spirit of Welsh region through his verse. The long shadows of two World Wars of 1914-18 and 1939-45 left an indelible impression on the minds of sensitive readers. Science and Technology have transformed our lives. The Second World War split the world into two blocks, the East dominated by Russia and the West by America. -

Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. 2 ABSTRACT This thesis identifies science as Ezra Pound’s first extended extra-poetic interest. This reference to science in Pound’s poetic theory and poetry is portrayed as rhetoric, with its emphasis on the linguistic signifier or word rather than the actual concepts and data of science. The material covers over two decades between 1901, when Pound entered university, and 1922, after he left London. Beginning with Pound’s exposure to philology, the thesis establishes a correlation between his educational background and his use of scientific rhetoric in his prose. As he attempted to establish a professional status for the poet, he used metaphors linking literature to the natural sciences and comparisons between the poet and the scientist. Additionally, Pound attempted to organize poetic movements that resembled the professional scientific organizations that were beginning to form in America. In his writings promoting these movements, Pound developed a hygienic theory of poetry— itself an extensive rhetorical project—which produced a clean, bare poem and further linked Pound’s poetic output with the sciences. Beyond his rhetorical use of science, Pound attempted to study the sciences and even adopted a doctor persona for his friends with illnesses—both diagnosing and prescribing cures. -

164 205 SIR CHARLES GAVAN DUFFY (1816-1903) His New Gate Prison cell lock cover plate. The rectangular metal plate painted on both sides with white numerals ‘22’, 12.8 x 10.1 cm. Sir Charles Gavan Duffy, Irish nationalist, politician, journalist and 8th Premier of Victoria. He was arrested in 1846 following an attempt at insurrection in Tipperary and was imprisoned in Richmond Prison on a charge of sedition based on his involvement with ‘Young Ireland’ and articles that had appeared in The Nation, which he edited and co-founded with Thomas Davis and John Blake Dillon. Duffy was first imprisoned in New Gate, which served as a holding facility for prisoners, prior to his conviction and removal to Richmond prison. He was later released in April 1849. In 1856, disheartened by the political atmosphere in Ireland, he emigrated with his family to Australia and later became the 8th Premier of Victoria in 1871. This unique item bears a typed clipping attached to the rear of the number plate, though not entirely readable, it recounts the return of Sir Charles Gavan Duffy to New Gate prison prior to its demolition in 1893 wherein he visited his old cell and asked the new owner of the property for the lock so that he might return to Australia with it. The transcription of this text is as follows: Mr. T Byrne… sends us the… “After the purchase of Newgate Jail… by my father, the late Mr. ____ Byrne b____ 38 and 39 J_____ street. In the course of his taking down the old building, the late Sir Charles Gavan Duffy called into the jail and asked to be shown the cell he was confined in.
