COMPTES RENDUS BOOK REVIEWS Gerald Dawe, The Wrong Country: Essays on Modern Irish Writing, Newbridge, Irish Academic Press, 2018, 294 p. The title of Gerald Dawe’s new collection of essays on modern Irish writing is taken from Hugo Hamilton’s famous novel, The Speckled People. Dawe opens his book by quoting “You can’t be afraid of saying the opposite, even if you look like a fool and everybody thinks you’re in the wrong country, speaking the wrong language” (p. vi). This opening sentence is a relevant guide to Dawe’s essays, in which the TCD professor Emeritus tries to lead a quiet combat to conjure up forgotten authors (such as Joseph Campbell, George Reavey, or Ethna Carbery) and bring a diversity of perspectives on more renowned Irish writers of the last two centuries. -

Bachelor Thesis Charlotte Romp Supervisor: dr. R. H. van den Beuken 15 June 2017 Engelse Taal en Cultuur Radboud University Nijmegen Romp /2 Abstract This research will answer the question: in what ways does the poetry written by Francis Ledwidge in the wake of the Easter Rising reflect a changing stance on his role as an Irish soldier in the First World War? Guy Beiner’s notion of triumphalist memory of trauma will be employed in order to analyse this. Ledwidge’s status as a war poet will also be examined by applying Terry Phillips’ definition of war poetry. By remembering the Irish soldiers who decided to fight in the First World War, new light will be shed on a period in Irish history that has hitherto been subjected to national amnesia. This will lead to more complete and inclusive Irish identities. This thesis will argue that Ledwidge’s sentiments with regards to the war changed multiple times during the last year of his life. He is, arguably, an embodiment of the conflicting loyalties and tensions in Ireland at the time of the Easter Rising. Shots Were Fired | norient.com 1 Oct 2021 02:06:01 Shots Were Fired MIXTAPE by Bernard Clarke War is the biggest and most horrible drama of human kind. Yet the noises of war – everything from swords clanging to modern machine guns and bombs – have fascinated musicians and composers for centuries. For his mix «shots were fired» for the section «war» from the Norient exhibition Seismographic Sounds the Irish radio journalist Bernard Clarke combined radio news samples with musically deconstructed war sounds. «shots were fired» is a deeply personal response to a tragedy and farce played out in a Paris dripping with blood and a media whipping up a frenzy; to and of the forgotten victims in France and around the world; and of and to the so-called world leaders who seized on this outrage for a media opportunity, a «selfie». Western societies are not the havens of rationalism that they often proclaim themselves to be. The West is a polychromatic space, in which both freedom of thought and tightly regulated speech exist, and in which disavowals of deadly violence happen at the same time as clandestine torture. And yet, at moments when Western societies consider themselves under attack, the discourse is quickly dominated by an ahistorical fantasy of long- suffering fortitude in the face of provocation. Yet European and American history are so strongly marked by efforts to control speech that the persecution of rebellious thought stands as a bedrock of these societies. Witch burnings, heresy trials, and the untiring work of the Inquisition shaped Europe, and these ideas extended into American history as well and took on American modes, from the breaking of slaves to the genocide of American Indians to censuring of critics of «Operation Iraqi Freedom». -

Irish Working-Class Poetry 1900-1960 In 1936, writing in the Oxford Book of Modern Verse, W.B. Yeats felt the need to stake a claim for the distance of art from popular political concerns; poets’ loyalty was to their art and not to the common man: Occasionally at some evening party some young woman asked a poet what he thought of strikes, or declared that to paint pictures or write poetry at such a moment was to resemble the fiddler Nero [...] We poets continued to write verse and read it out at the ‘Cheshire Cheese’, convinced that to take part in such movements would be only less disgraceful than to write for the newspapers.1 Yeats was, of course, striking a controversial pose here. Despite his famously refusing to sign a public letter of support for Carl von Ossietzky on similar apolitical grounds, Yeats was a decidedly political poet, as his flirtation with the Blueshirt movement will attest.2 The political engagement mocked by Yeats is present in the Irish working-class writers who produced a range of poetry from the popular ballads of the socialist left, best embodied by James Connolly, to the urban bucolic that is Patrick Kavanagh’s late canal-bank poetry. Their work, whilst varied in scope and form, was engaged with the politics of its time. In it, the nature of the term working class itself is contested. This conflicted identity politics has been a long- standing feature of Irish poetry, with a whole range of writers seeking to appropriate the voice of ‘The Plain People of Ireland’ for their own political and artistic ends.3 1 W.B. -

164 205 SIR CHARLES GAVAN DUFFY (1816-1903) His New Gate Prison cell lock cover plate. The rectangular metal plate painted on both sides with white numerals ‘22’, 12.8 x 10.1 cm. Sir Charles Gavan Duffy, Irish nationalist, politician, journalist and 8th Premier of Victoria. He was arrested in 1846 following an attempt at insurrection in Tipperary and was imprisoned in Richmond Prison on a charge of sedition based on his involvement with ‘Young Ireland’ and articles that had appeared in The Nation, which he edited and co-founded with Thomas Davis and John Blake Dillon. Duffy was first imprisoned in New Gate, which served as a holding facility for prisoners, prior to his conviction and removal to Richmond prison. He was later released in April 1849. In 1856, disheartened by the political atmosphere in Ireland, he emigrated with his family to Australia and later became the 8th Premier of Victoria in 1871. This unique item bears a typed clipping attached to the rear of the number plate, though not entirely readable, it recounts the return of Sir Charles Gavan Duffy to New Gate prison prior to its demolition in 1893 wherein he visited his old cell and asked the new owner of the property for the lock so that he might return to Australia with it. The transcription of this text is as follows: Mr. T Byrne… sends us the… “After the purchase of Newgate Jail… by my father, the late Mr. ____ Byrne b____ 38 and 39 J_____ street. In the course of his taking down the old building, the late Sir Charles Gavan Duffy called into the jail and asked to be shown the cell he was confined in. -
