  • THE EMERGING INEQUALITY of CUSTOMER LIFETIME VALUE Nelson D
ChangeThis 186.01 THE EMERGING INEQUALITY OF CUSTOMER LIFETIME VALUE Nelson D. Schwartz 186.01 Adam Goldstein walks Schwartz Nelson D. Inequality ofThe Emerging Customer Lifetime Value a fine line. As vice chairman of Royal Caribbean, he wants the cruise ship line’s most elite passengers to have a superior experience—but at the same time, he needs to make sure ordinary guests don’t feel like second-class travelers when they come aboard his ships. It’s a job that’s gotten harder in recent years as Royal Caribbean has broadened its offer- ings to attract more deep-pocketed cruisers. Like many consumer-facing businesses, Royal Caribbean has gone after the one percent because that’s where the growth is. The result is what I call the Velvet Rope Economy. On Royal Caribbean cruises, a virtual velvet rope divides passengers who dine at the Windjammer Café, which is open to everyone, from an elite oasis next door called Coastal Kitchen. There are no crowds at Coastal Kitchen and the calm atmosphere inside is a world away from the hectic scene at Windjammer. When jealous refugees from Windjammer work up the courage to open the frosted glass doors and inquire about a table, they are politely—but firmly—informed that Coastal Kitchen is only open to guests in the ship’s Royal Suite Class or members of Pinnacle, Royal Caribbean’s version of elite frequent-flier status on the airlines. The split between Windjammer and Coastal Kitchen is a metaphor for contemporary consumer life. Whatever the arena—health care, education, work, travel and leisure—on the right side of the rope is a friction-free existence where, for a price, needs are antici- pated and catered to.

Finally, I would like to thank the support and contributions of my peers in the Economic and Social History Senior Thesis class. 4 Abstract The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the impact of city policy changes and the processes of gentrification on 1980s nightlife subculture in New York City. What are important to this work are the contributions and influence of nightlife subculture to greater New York City history through fashion, music, and art. I intend to prove that, in combination with the city’s gradual revanchism of neighborhood properties, the self-destructive nature of this after-hours sector has led to its own demise.

  • Gillian Laub CV 2021
Gillian Laub (b.1975, Chappaqua, New York) is a photographer and filmmaker based in New York. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a degree in comparative literature before studying photography at the International Center of Photography, where her love of visual storytelling and family narratives began. Laub’s first monograph, Testimony (Aperture 2007), began as a response to the media coverage during the second Intifada in the Middle East, and a desire to create a dialogue between apparent enemies. This work is comprised of portraits and testimonies from Israeli Jews, Israeli Arabs, Lebanese, and Palestinians all directly and indirectly affected by the complicated geopolitical context in which they lived. Laub spent over a decade working in Georgia exploring issues of lingering racism in the American South. This work became Laub’s first feature length, directed and produced, documentary film, Southern Rites that premiered on HBO in May 2015. Her monograph, Southern Rites (Damiani, 2015) and travelling exhibition by the same title came out in conjunction with the film and are being used for an educational outreach campaign, in schools and institutions across the country. Southern Rites was named one of the best photo books of 2015 by TIME, Smithsonian, Vogue, LensCulture, and American Photo. It was also nominated for a Lucie award and Humanitas award. "Riveting...In a calm, understated tone, Southern Rites digs deep to expose the roots that have made segregated proms and other affronts possible. Southern Rites is a portrait of the inequities that lead to disaster on the streets of cities like Baltimore and Ferguson, Mo.” - The New York Times Laub has been interviewed on NPR, CNN, MSNBC, Good Morning America, Times Talks and numerous others.

  • Lycra, Legs, and Legitimacy: Performances of Feminine Power in Twentieth Century American Popular Culture
LYCRA, LEGS, AND LEGITIMACY: PERFORMANCES OF FEMININE POWER IN TWENTIETH CENTURY AMERICAN POPULAR CULTURE Quincy Thomas A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2018 Committee: Jonathan Chambers, Advisor Francisco Cabanillas, Graduate Faculty Representative Bradford Clark Lesa Lockford © 2018 Quincy Thomas All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jonathan Chambers, Advisor As a child, when I consumed fictional narratives that centered on strong female characters, all I noticed was the enviable power that they exhibited. From my point of view, every performance by a powerful character like Wonder Woman, Daisy Duke, or Princess Leia, served to highlight her drive, ability, and intellect in a wholly uncomplicated way. What I did not notice then was the often-problematic performances of female power that accompanied those narratives. As a performance studies and theatre scholar, with a decades’ old love of all things popular culture, I began to ponder the troubling question: Why are there so many popular narratives focused on female characters who are, on a surface level, portrayed as bastions of strength, that fall woefully short of being true representations of empowerment when subjected to close analysis? In an endeavor to answer this question, in this dissertation I examine what I contend are some of the paradoxical performances of female heroism, womanhood, and feminine aggression from the 1960s to the 1990s. To facilitate this investigation, I engage in close readings of several key aesthetic and cultural texts from these decades. While the Wonder Woman comic book universe serves as the centerpiece of this study, I also consider troublesome performances and representations of female power in the television shows Bewitched, I Dream of Jeannie, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the film Grease, the stage musical Les Misérables, and the video game Tomb Raider.

  • No Velvet Rope
No Velvet Rope Luke 2: 1-14 During the late 1970’s, when disco music’s sun shone at its biggest and brightest, an exclusive dance club made the scene in New York City. Named Studio 54, the club hit upon the marketing genius of having world-famous celebrities mingle elbow to elbow with everyday folk who were lucky enough—or interesting enough—or attractive enough--to gain admission. Celebrity regulars in the Studio 54 crowd included Bianca Jagger, Liza Minnelli, Andy Warhol and Truman Capote. Elizabeth Taylor and Michael Jackson sometimes made the scene. But the nightly scene outside the club was as significant as inside. Hopefuls massed on the sidewalk, jockeying to get in, or at least to catch a glimpse of arriving celebrities. Clubowner Steve Rubell would perch atop a fire hydrant, scan the crowd, and hand-pick who would be waved past the club’s velvet rope and who would be left on the outside looking in. One old youtube documentary I watched follows two women from Kansas City, a homemaker and her friend who is a “Mom and Pop” restaurant owner, as they wait in the hopeful crowd outside the club.1 It is clear from their attire and their actions that the big city scene is new to them. The homemaker reassures the restauranteur, “They’ll never let me in, I’m a nobody, but you’ll be certain to get in, honey—as soon as you talk to the manager, they’ll let you in in a minute.” And the restaurant owner replies confidently, “That Dale Carnegie Course will come in real handy, won’t it?” But Dale Carnegie or no, the conversation with the manager goes nowhere.
