Chasing Wild Space Narrative Outsides and World-Building Frontiers in Knights of the Old Republic and The Old Republic Cody Mejeur As introduced in the iconic line that precedes the first film’s opening crawl, Star Wars’s galaxy far, far away is the foundation for the franchise’s world- building efforts. It is the backdrop and context for the story told by any Star Wars film, novel, game, or other text,1 and as such it functions as a narrative world or storyworld. David Herman describes a storyworld as the “mental model” of the larger world of a text, one that audiences construct from “textual cues and the inferences that they make possible.”2 In other words, the Star Wars galaxy is only partially represented by any particular text, and audiences use that partial representation to imagine how the rest of the galaxy works. However, it seems strange to call the Star Wars galaxy, itself an agglomeration of inconsistent and contested narratives, characters, and worlds, a singular storyworld. Marie-Laure Ryan’s recent conception of the narrative universe as an accumulation of storyworlds seems more apt.3 This chapter therefore explores the space of the Star Wars galaxy as a narrative universe, arguing that it renews itself and its transmedial franchise through the mystery of outside spaces. The use of these outside spaces in Star Wars suggests a new modification or addition to existing theories of narrative world-building, and draws critical attention to the ethical and political dimensions of world-building processes. A narrative universe relies on the creation of narrative space, including a dynamic process of expanding and exploring that space.

Laub’s first monograph, Testimony (Aperture 2007), began as a response to the media coverage during the second Intifada in the Middle East, and a desire to create a dialogue between apparent enemies. This work is comprised of portraits and testimonies from Israeli Jews, Israeli Arabs, Lebanese, and Palestinians all directly and indirectly affected by the complicated geopolitical context in which they lived. Laub spent over a decade working in Georgia exploring issues of lingering racism in the American South. This work became Laub’s first feature length, directed and produced, documentary film, Southern Rites that premiered on HBO in May 2015. Knopf Keywords: Star Wars, Resistance, Women’s March A January 2017 article from the Independent led with the words, “Across the world, Carrie Fisher's rebel princess turned general become [sic] a source of hope and inspiration for women everywhere” (Loughrey 2017, para. 1). The article was loaded with images from Twitter of protest signs bearing Carrie Fisher’s visage with her iconic hair rolls superimposed with such slogans as “Woman’s Place is in the Resistance,” “We are the Resistance,” and “Rebel Scum.” Signs found in Twitter posts, news articles, and published archives revealed numerous Star Wars-inspired messages of feminist rebellion and resistance. Some featured Princess Leia as Rosie the Riveter, the emblem of the Resistance fighters tattooed on her arm or taking the place of Rosie’s employment badge on her collar. Signs recreated the Star Wars’ ITC Serif Gothic Heavy font to proclaim that “The Women Strike Back,” “The Fempire Strikes Back,” “The Estrogen Empire Strikes Back,” and “The Female Force Awakens,” others presented the Resistance insignia and/or Princess Leia’s face stating “Resistance is Built on Hope.” Some protestors dressed in a full Princess Leia costumes from A New Hope, promising to defeat the Dark Side. Some marchers paraphrased Leia’s iconic plea to Obi Wan, and declared, “We are Our Only Hope.” A sign paraphrasing Yoda argued that “Fear leads to anger.
