DAY ONE HIGHLIGHTS

 The 2017 US Open begins on Monday with 2014 champion Marin Cilic and #NextGenATP superstar Alexander Zverev celebrating the 20th anniversary of Arthur Ashe Stadium with matches inside the largest arena in the world. Cilic takes on Tennys Sandgren, one of 11 Americans in action on opening day. Zverev meets qualifier Darian King, who is the first men’s player from Barbados to play a main draw match at a tournament.

 Cilic has not played a match since the Wimbledon final due to an adductor injury. Should Cilic capture his second Grand Slam title in New York, he will become the first player in the Open Era to win this tournament without playing a match between Wimbledon and the US Open. The No. 5 seed was originally drawn to meet former World No. 6 Gilles Simon, but moved to the bottom of the draw when No. 2 seed withdrew due to a hip injury.

 Zverev is 10-1 in his last 11 matches with back-to-back hard-court titles at Washington and ATP Masters 1000 Montreal, where he defeated in the championship match. The 20-year-old German is tied with Federer for the ATP-lead with five titles this season. However, Zverev has yet to reach a Grand Slam quarter-final. As the No. 4 seed and World No. 6, he is the highest-seeded and top-ranked player in the bottom half of the draw.

 The Top 4 Americans in the 2016 year-end rankings -- No. 10 seed John Isner, No. 13 seed Jack Sock, No. 17 seed Sam Querrey and unseeded Steve Johnson -- are all playing first-round matches on Monday. The only one with a winning record against his opponent is Isner, who is 1-0 versus Pierre-Hugues Herbert. Eleven American men are on Monday’s schedule and 19 are in the field, including qualifying wild cards Evan King and JC Aragone. The Michigan alum King and Virginia alum Aragone make their US Open main draw singles debuts on Monday.

 Andy Roddick, the 2003 US Open champion, is the last American man to win a Grand Slam championship. The 2017 US Open is the 56th Slam since Roddick’s triumph, the longest gap ever between Grand Slam titles for US men. Roddick and Andre Agassi are the only America Grand Slam finalists of the last 14 years. They lost to Federer in all five of their Grand Slam finals following the 2003 US Open. Roddick was runner-up to Federer at the 2006 US Open and at Wimbledon in 2004, 2005 and 2009. Agassi fell to Federer in the 2005 US Open final.
