It appears eligible for designation as a West Hollywood Cultural Resource as an individual property through survey evaluation (5S3). It is significant in the context of Modern West Hollywood under criterion C for its association with persons or events significant in local history. The Source was one of the first popular organic vegetarian restaurants in Los Angeles and was a fixture on the Sunset Strip. Though its 1969 beginning made it the last of three restaurants opened on the Sunset Strip by organic food pioneer Jim Baker, The Source made the largest cultural impact. Unlike Baker’s other restaurants (The Aware Inn and The Old Country), it featured a 100% vegetarian menu, which soon attracted a celebrity clientele including Marlon Brando, John Lennon, Julie Christie and Warren Beatty. Its notoriety led to Woody Allen choosing it for the final break-up scene in 1977’s Oscar-winning movie "Annie Hall". It is also the source of the name of Baker’s cult, which, as Father Yod, he named “The Source Family”. Baker sold the restaurant in 1974 when he moved his followers to Hawaii, but the restaurant lasted until the 1980s, and its influence can be seen in the present spate of organic vegetarian restaurants ranging from Café Gratitude to Native Foods. Based on visual observation, the property retains all aspects of integrity from the period of significance. There are no apparent alterations visible from the public right-of-way. Though… B11. Creative workers like actors, producers, and writers come to L.A. to pursue dreams of stardom, especially in the Hollywood film and television media industries. For most, a “big break” into their chosen field remains perpetually out of reach despite their constant efforts. Expensive workshops like acting classes, networking events, and chance encounters are seen as keys to Hollywood success. Within this world, rumors swirl of big breaks for devotees in the city’s spiritual and religious organizations. For others, it is in consultations with local spiritual advisors like professional psychics that they navigate everyday decisions of how to achieve success in Hollywood.

Cline, B.A.; M.A. Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of The University of Texas at Austin in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy The University of Texas at Austin May 2012 Dedication This dissertation is dedicated to my mother and father, Gary and Linda Cline. Without their generous hearts, tolerant ears, and (occasionally) open pocketbooks, I would have never made it this far, in any endeavor. A second, related dedication goes out to my siblings, Nicholas and Elizabeth. We all get the help we need when we need it most, don’t we? Acknowledgements First and foremost, I would like to thank my dissertation supervisor, Mark Smith. Even though we don’t necessarily work on the same kinds of topics, I’ve always appreciated his patient advice. I’m sure he’d be loath to use the word “wisdom,” but his open mind combined with ample, sometimes non-academic experience provided reassurances when they were needed most. Following closely on Mark’s heels is Karl Miller. Although not technically my supervisor, his generosity with his time and his always valuable (if sometimes painful) feedback during the dissertation writing process was absolutely essential to the development of the project, especially while Mark was abroad on a Fulbright.

    Hamburgers, Hemorrhages, and Haute Cuisine

HAMBURGERS, HEMORRHAGES, AND HAUTE CUISINE by Lynne Friedman SC Hospital, Central Los Angeles. “Where are you, Hal?” “I’m with a pretty nurse.” That’s how I knew my dad was “with it” in the wee hours of January 14, 2016, after he suffered a brain hemorrhage that put him into emergency surgery. UThe surgery had gone well, but sedating an eighty-four-year-old has its risks and it took him a long time to come out of it. He was agitated and fighting to get up, so they had to sedate him again, just for the follow-up CT scan. This last dose of sedative took away his ability to speak or respond for close to twenty-four hours. And that was scary for me, his only child. When he opened his eyes, the staff tried to evaluate him. They asked him questions about where he was and what year it was. Blank stare. But I knew how we would get a response: “Do you like Tommy’s chiliburgers or hot dogs better?” “Hot dogs.” “Dad, what’s your favorite pie? Apple or rhubarb?” “Rhubarb,” he said. [74] Lynne Friedman Then, he looked straight at me. “Will you make me a rhubarb pie?” And the answer was yes, absolutely yes. I am a chef who cooks upscale international cuisine, but getting that rhubarb pie exactly right for the man who has been my most forthright critic meant more to me than any praise I might get elsewhere. And I hoped I would get to go to Tommy’s with him again.

The Evolution of American Spiritual Communities, 1965–2009

NR1303_03 12/2/09 11:27 AM Page 14 The Evolution of American Spiritual Communities, 1965–2009 Timothy Miller ABSTRACT: The great outpouring of new religious and spiritual movements in the United States after 1965 led to the formation of thousands of spiritual intentional communities. Those communities were based in all the world’s major religions, as well as in new expressions of religion articulated by a rising generation of independent spiritual teachers. Many communities gathered around charismatic leaders, and quite a few of them continued after the leader died or stepped down. Over time those communities that survived evolved in form and outlook; in some cases once-authoritative leaders were deposed, and in others the death or departure of a leader led to changes in the group. External social pressure in several cases influenced various groups’ developmental trajectories. This paper examines the histories of several religious communal groups, focusing on ones that have survived and exploring the modifications they have undertaken as their members have matured. f the plethora of new religions that emerged in the United States after 1965, many are defunct, or essentially defunct; some Osurvive, but in heavily modified form; and a few survive without massive changes. In this article I will describe, rather anecdotally, the evolution of several American new religions, some of them fairly well known, some of them less so, and in keeping with the theme of this issue of Nova Religio, I am confining this discussion to the subset of new reli- gions that practice communal living. As a part of my overall examination of change over time, I will include some that continue to exist commu- nally, some whose communal patterns have undergone major changes, and some that have given up communal living entirely, or nearly so.

    Nice Pooper - Djin Interview

Nice Pooper - Djin Interview http://nicepooperzine.com/interview_djin.html Djin of the Yahowha Family Interviewed via email by AndyP- March 2003 Can you give us a little background on what you were up to before you met Jim Baker? Were you a musician before joining the Collective? I was a musician/singer/songwriter from Chicago who migrated to the West Coast in 68. In 72, at the time I joined the Source, I had pretty much developed my musical identity and talents. The Chicago scene was pretty rich with music back then. But, what those talents meant, to me, were opportunities for bringing much needed evolutionary change to humanity, which, obviously, Father Yod/Yahowha [formerly known as Jim Baker] put to wonderful use. I was sort of a musical messenger drifting with the winds up and down the West coast until I found the Source. How did you meet Jim Baker? I met Jim Baker, on his birthday July 4th, 1971, shortly after he “became” Father Yod. Father Yod was his midway transformation between Jim Baker and Yahowha. The way I met him, at that time, goes like this; I was living in Chicago, still Viet Nam war times, playing peace and love songs I had written, and was performing at a restaurant/cabaret called Ratzo’s. A friend, James Clouse, who was a busboy at Ratzos, knew about the recent formation of the Source Family in Hollywood. He strongly suggested that I should go with him and “meet my father.” The spiritual rebirth of those times was so strong in America, gurus and masters abound, religious dogmas falling, free thinking rising etc.
