Staff & Volunteer List ……………………………………………. 36 – 37 RacingThePlanet is a unique category of rough country footraces that take place over seven days and some 250 kilometers in remote and culturally rich locations around the world. Competitors must carry all their own equipment and food, are only provided with water and a place in a tent each day but are supported by professional medical and operations teams. RacingThePlanet is international; the events typically involve competitors from over 20 different countries who are able to mingle around the campfires and in their geographically mixed tents. Currently the events consist of the 4 Deserts, a series which encompasses the Gobi Desert in China, the Atacama Desert of Chile, the Sahara Desert of Egypt and Antarctica, and a fifth event, which roves to a new location each year. In 2010, this location will be Western Australia. RacingThePlanet also operates an online store which is now Asia’s largest. The online store features the world’s best outdoor clothing, gear and nutrition sourced from around the world and tested in the most grueling sporting events in the world -- RacingThePlanet and the 4 Deserts. The store is located in Hong Kong and the United Kingdom and ships to more than 40 countries worldwide. The store can be found at www.racingtheplanet.com/store. • Iwalk 2016- Ifast Marching 6,045Km for Charity in Australia3
Marching 6,045km for Charity in Australia iFAST Corp brought its largest ever contingent, consisting of 76 employees, wealth advisers and directors to Oxfam Trailwalker Brisbane, as part of its iWALK Initiative (“iFAST Wealth Advisers Lead Kindness Initiative”) What started as a challenge issued by a few extreme sports veterans in iFAST Corporation Ltd. (“iFAST Corp”) in 2011 quickly engulfed others who were new to this type of endurance sports. From sending one team of four employees in 2011 to tackle Hong Kong’ mountainous terrain as part of Oxfam Trailwalker, this year’s contingent from iFAST Corp to Oxfam Trailwalker Brisbane was its largest ever at a total of 76 walkers. Over the 17-19 June 2016 period, the 76 walkers achieved a magnificent feat of covering a total of 6,045km in Brisbane! This year, iFAST Corp decided to spread the joy and excitement over endurance sports to raise funds for charity with the wealth advisers using its Business-to-Business (B2B) platform. Over 5,500 wealth advisers from 170 financial advisory companies, financial institutions and banks use the B2B platform across iFAST Corp’s regional markets. A total of 76 walkers, including 40 wealth advisers and two directors from iFAST Corp’s board of directors took the leap of faith to travel to Brisbane, with many wanting to kill two birds with one stone: challenge themselves physically and mentally for an endurance event, and raise funds for the causes Oxfam Trailwalker supports. Oxfam Trailwalker Brisbane o ers two distances to participants: 60km and 100km. 11 teams consisting of 44 walkers took on 100km (which has to be completed within 48 hours), while 8 teams with 32 walkers participated in 60km (which has to be completed within 24 hours).

  • OTW2019 Booklet ENG Online Outline.Indd
Foreword Ordinary People doing the Extraordinary Have your ever imagined that the people around you every day, whether they are chefs, teachers, shoemakers, or domestic helpers, are talented experts? Incredible people in our midst, fulfilling countless legends; these people include our enduring Oxfam Trailwalkers (OTW). They are determined to thrive, humble yet extraordinary, truly admired by all of us. The hardest challenge along the 100 km trail is not the rugged path, but four people working together unceasingly and unwaveringly within those 48 hours. The trailwalkers would have gone through rigorous training, meticulous planning and close communication with each other before being able to reach the finish line. These bittersweet experiences are just like what we have encountered in our lives. To make the OTW a success and even better every year takes great teamwork. Last year, we were happy to have the support of 5,000 walkers, 3,000 volunteers, over 38,000 donors, more than 5,000 support team members, and close to 20 sponsors. Since 1986, Hong Kong has seen over 100,000 people participate in the OTW and raise over HK$600 million. It originally started as a city-wide event and has now become an international one, with 14 regions taking part this year, including Korea, Australia, India, Spain, Belgium, the United Kingdom, France, and New Zealand. The effort and perseverance demonstrated by our walkers, volunteers, and support teams, echoes with our determination to fight against poverty, growing with the support of the people to forge head with our anti-poverty, advocacy, humanitarian, and education programmes to achieve our goal of creating a world without poverty! See you all at the starting and finishing lines on 15-17 November! Stephen Fisher Acting Director General Oxfam Hong Kong 1 2 A MESSAGE FROM AIA, PRINCIPAL SPONSOR 2019 is the fifth consecutive year that AIA is serving as the Principal Sponsor of Oxfam Trailwalker in the name of “AIA Vitality”.

  • Marathon Des Sables’ 2003–2012 Christoph Knoth1, Beat Knechtle2,3*, Christoph Alexander Rüst2, Thomas Rosemann2 and Romuald Lepers4
Knoth et al. Extreme Physiology & Medicine 2012, 1:13 http://www.extremephysiolmed.com/content/1/1/13 RESEARCH Open Access Participation and performance trends in multistage ultramarathons—the ‘Marathon des Sables’ 2003–2012 Christoph Knoth1, Beat Knechtle2,3*, Christoph Alexander Rüst2, Thomas Rosemann2 and Romuald Lepers4 Abstract Background: The purpose of this study was to investigate participation and performance changes in the multistage ultramarathon ‘Marathon des Sables’ from 2003 to 2012. Methods: Participation and performance trends in the four- or six-stage running event covering approximately 250 km were analyzed with special emphasis on the nationality and age of the athletes. The relations between gender, age, and nationality of finishers and performance were investigated using regression analyses and analysis of variance. Results: Between 2003 and 2012, a number of 7,275 athletes with 938 women (12.9%) and 6,337 men (87.1%) finished the Marathon des Sables. The finisher rate in both women (r2 = 0.62) and men (r2 = 0.60) increased across years (p < 0.01). Men were significantly (p < 0.01) faster than women for overall finishers (5.9 ± 1.6 km·h−1 versus 5.1 ± 1.3 km·h−1) and for the top three finishers (12.2 ± 0.4 km·h−1 versus 8.3 ± 0.6 km·h−1). The gender difference in running speed of the top three athletes decreased (r2 = 0.72; p < 0.01) from 39.5% in 2003 to 24.1% in 2012 with a mean gender difference of 31.7 ± 2.0%. In men, Moroccans won nine of ten competitions, and one edition was won by a Jordanian athlete.
