The race route starts at the Fuencaliente lighthouse at sea level and follows the GR all the way to Tazacorte port, finishing with a sting in the tail as runners are tested with a final climb up to the town in Los Llanos de Aridane. The south of the island is dominated by the dramatic Cumbre Vieja — a central spine of steep volcanos that create a blackened wasteland in stark contrast to the wild and green vistas of the north. The final sections of the volcano route offer good, fast running to El Pilar. Ian Corless has travelled across the globe to document the stunning beauty and incredible routes of some of the world's most iconic ultra trails. Everest was just the starting line. Show More. Although the island is relatively small, it is shaped like a question mark and each curve has many surprisingly different areas of natural beauty. I wasn't at all worried or concerned, as my main aim was to improve upon my time and position [ and 11th place] and hopefully have a good race with the top runners along the course. The path climbs the successive and increasingly high peaks to the Taburiente crater. But wait! Photography is stunning and it's easy to read. Stunning ridges and single-track trails are overshadowed by a key feature of the racing — a stunning, near-vertical climb, aided by rope, from the sea to the summit at Guinate. Uh-oh, it looks like your Internet Explorer is out of date. Despite the drop to the line, the terrain mostly remains relentless; a mix of dust, sand and rock only made increasingly worse as the temperatures and humidity increase with the passing of the day. Refresh and try again. It is one of the few sections of race course I've experienced that closely mimics the kind of track I enjoy most in training — steep, technical, heads-up, sometimes barely-there trail. It is a key tourist attraction and one of the highest points on the island. For me, I just knew it was nothing in the bigger picture, I knew I could hold on and keep going at a decent pace. The Canary Islands, a Spanish autonomous community located in the Atlantic Ocean just kilometres from the southern border of Morocco, have become a haven for trail- and mountain-running enthusiasts over recent years. It covers all kinds of "rather them than me" trail running, from the marathon-but-a- lot-hillier along the north coast of Menorca, to the Marathon des Sables, and hugely mountainous scrambles where the runners are severely dwarfed by their surroundings, or just inches away from losing grip on the rock-fastened safety wire and plunging to their death. A cruel sting in the tail comes at the very end, with the most nontechnical running of the day — a stone-and-concrete river bed that leads the runners for many kilometres to the finish close to the sea. It's a logical route with no ambiguity. Flowing text, Google-generated PDF. The island of Lanzarote has long been a mecca for endurance sports. This is, after all, the home of Ironman Lanzarote, arguably one of the toughest in the world. About Ian Corless. Dropping from the summit to Tejeda at 71 kilometres , the penultimate big push of the day follows from Garanon to the highest summit of the race and the highest point of the island, Pico de las Nieves. Roque Nublo, a key and iconic marker, provides a short out-and-back section before the final and lengthy drop to the finish line via Tunte, Ayagaures, Parque Sur and the Maspalomas finish. Knoth et al. Extreme Physiology & Medicine 2012, 1:13 http://www.extremephysiolmed.com/content/1/1/13 RESEARCH Open Access Participation and performance trends in multistage ultramarathons—the ‘Marathon des Sables’ 2003–2012 Christoph Knoth1, Beat Knechtle2,3*, Christoph Alexander Rüst2, Thomas Rosemann2 and Romuald Lepers4 Abstract Background: The purpose of this study was to investigate participation and performance changes in the multistage ultramarathon ‘Marathon des Sables’ from 2003 to 2012. Methods: Participation and performance trends in the four- or six-stage running event covering approximately 250 km were analyzed with special emphasis on the nationality and age of the athletes. The relations between gender, age, and nationality of finishers and performance were investigated using regression analyses and analysis of variance. Results: Between 2003 and 2012, a number of 7,275 athletes with 938 women (12.9%) and 6,337 men (87.1%) finished the Marathon des Sables. The finisher rate in both women (r2 = 0.62) and men (r2 = 0.60) increased across years (p < 0.01). Men were significantly (p < 0.01) faster than women for overall finishers (5.9 ± 1.6 km·h−1 versus 5.1 ± 1.3 km·h−1) and for the top three finishers (12.2 ± 0.4 km·h−1 versus 8.3 ± 0.6 km·h−1). The gender difference in running speed of the top three athletes decreased (r2 = 0.72; p < 0.01) from 39.5% in 2003 to 24.1% in 2012 with a mean gender difference of 31.7 ± 2.0%. In men, Moroccans won nine of ten competitions, and one edition was won by a Jordanian athlete.

  • Sahara Desert Travel Information
Sahara Desert Travel Information Extending from Morocco to Egypt, Sahara is third largest desert in the world. “All sunshine makes the desert” says an Arabic proverb. Sahara Desert is a natural oven of biblical proportions in which every oasis is a refuge for intrepid travelers. From the coast of Casablanca to the Nile delta in Cairo, the transgressing sheet of sand fades out into infinity. In this fount of solitude where sand is as orange as it gets, the only god is water and night is the only deliverance. This uncharitable land, which is roughly as big as the United States, evokes an irresistible sense of antiquity and mystery. History The desert began to form as the land eroded after the water evaporated in the late Ice Age about 100,000 years ago. The fringes of the desert were inhabited by early human civilizations. The extensive rock art of Palaeolithic period, which stretches back at least 10,000 years, shows that nomadic tribes like Berber, Tuareg, and Bedouin have called this area home. Over the years, their culture and traditions evolved as they interacted with the Greeks, Romans, Egyptians, Vandals, Arabs, and most recently Europeans. Things to Do in Sahara Desert Contrary to popular notion, only about 25 percent of its area is blanketed with sand. Thus, activities in this otherworldly landscape can be as varied as the desert itself. Camel Safaris – Since our salad days, most of us dream of sitting on a camel, be it on the Atlas Mountains or in the Nile River Valley. Hop on the flat hump of a ‘ship of the desert' and slowly march into the Saharan countryside.
