Sandman, Aesthetics and Canonisation Today I want to examine the ways in which Neil Gaiman’s Sandman has used narrative, format and aesthetic to move ever closer to the notion of the literary text. Particularly going to consider how it exploits the author function and enacts the struggle for cultural worth that comics seem consistently engaged in. Sandman is an epic series rewriting a golden-age superhero into an immortal deity. It is best remembered for its mythological content and literary references, and these elements have allowed it to claim its place as a canonised graphic novel (despite not actually being a singular GN but a maxi-series across multiple trade paperbacks!). Neil Gaiman’s authorship and authority dominate the text and epitomise Michel Foucault’s author function. But Sandman also draws heavily on mixed media and artistic variation and these aspects are less often discussed. Far from supporting a singular author function, Sandman’s visual style is multiple and varied. But despite this, in paratexts the artistic contributions are frequently subsumed into Gaiman’s authorship. However, a closer reading demonstrates that in fact this artistic variety destabilises clear-cut authorship and enacts the particular status struggles of comics as a collaborative medium struggling against the graphic novel branding. SLIDE: literary pix Sandman was launched in 1989 and became the flagship title for DC’s new Vertigo imprint. Vertigo’s publications contributed heavily to the mainstream cultural revaluation of comics as graphic novels, and critics such as Candace West have argued that Sandman in particular was instrumental here due to the attention the series received from mainstream media such as Rolling Stone magazine. -

DOI: 10.4312/elope.8.2.45-62 Davorin Dernovšek University of Ljubljana Faculty of Arts, English Department The Divine Sandman Summary "e article discusses the intricacies of Neil Gaiman’s comics work !e Sandman through the lens of reception; particularly it examines how Dante Alighieri’s masterpiece !e Divine Comedy echoes through this epic comic. It not only tries to bring together (or rather deconstruct) these two profound works of art from diverse eras of human expression, it also discusses how two di#erent modes of artistic expression – comics and poetry – converge on a metalevel. It furthermore treats the general nature of comics; denoting both their connection with literature and art in general, though in this respect also stressing the need for a separate study of the comics medium, and not as merely a genre of either literature or art. Natishan Unless otherwise stated Returning the King: The Medieval King in Modern Fantasy Georgia Kathryn Natishan ABSTRACT In an interview with Hy Bender, Neil Gaiman states, “We have the right, and the obligation, to tell old stories in our own ways, because they are our stories.” While fantasy stands apart from other types of fiction, it still provides a particular kind of commentary on the culture/time it is being created in, often by toying with older themes and conventions. Stories of the quest for kingship tend to fall by the wayside in favor of the “unlikely hero” tale. While the king’s story is not always vastly different from that of the hero, there are some key points that need to be taken into consideration. Unlike many heroes, especially in the modern sense, kings (whether recognized at first or not) are born for the duty they must eventually fulfill. A hero may be unaware of the problem at first or later reluctant to engage it; more often than not in tales of kingship there is a deep awareness of the problem and the knowledge of their potential in solving it. -

Kiernan’s writing for the DC/Vertigo comic series The Dreaming, a spin-off of Neil Gaiman’s Sandman. It places Kiernan’s writing for the series in the wider context of both her prose fictional writings and representations of LGBTQI+ characters in American comics. It uses Moira Weigel’s concept of “sadomodernism” to characterize Kiernan’s writings, demonstrating how Kiernan’s use of this mode in The Dreaming anticipated signature characteristics of her later fictions. Close reading of selected excerpts from the published comics, as well as Kiernan’s scripts, emails, and editorial remarks alongside the work of queer and trans theorists, including Judith Butler and Jack Halberstam, reveal how groundbreaking Kiernan’s unsettling work with the series was and remains. ‘You can be me when I’m gone’ Mixed media in Sandman: Overture DC Vertigo’s Sandman series is best remembered as Neil Gaiman’s magnum opus: an epic maxi-series that ran for 75 episodes across 7 years and launched DC’s Vertigo imprint. Its use of mythological content and literary references allowed Sandman to claim its place as a canonised graphic novel (despite not actually being a graphic novel at all!) and Gaiman’s authorship and authority dominate the text and epitomise Michel Foucault’s author function. But Sandman also draws heavily on mixed media and artistic variation and these aspects are less often discussed. Far from supporting a singular author function, Sandman’s visual style is multiple and varied. But despite this, in paratexts and intertexts the artistic contributions are frequently subsumed into Gaiman’s authorship. However, a closer reading demonstrates that in fact Sandman’s mixed media visuals and eclectic art destabilises its singular authorship and enacts the particular status struggles of comics as a collaborative medium struggling against the literary graphic novel branding. SLIDE DC’s Vertigo imprint contributed heavily to the mainstream cultural revaluation of comics as graphic novels. Its use of the graphic novel format to collect stories into distinct arcs, often bookended by short epilogues and prologues, prompts Maaheen Ahmed (69) to claim that QUOTE ‘The difference between these issues and the chapters in a novel is small’. Alongside a bookish structure, Sandman also offers weighty literary content: adapting multiple religious mythologies and literary allusions (for example, Shakespeare and Chaucer). It consistently sold 100,000 copies per issue during its run and won Gaiman four Eisner awards and, somewhat controversially, the 1991 World Fantasy Award for Best Short Fiction for the MSND issue (#19). -
