The data were in the forms of words, phrases, sentences, and dialogues between the characters in the novel, which were then categorized into four types of characterization according to Rimmon-Kenan (2003), namely act, appearance, speech, and environment. Furthermore, the data were framed by conflictual points while identifying certain events and narrations that are considered as the portrayal of an antihero using the theory of antihero by Wilson et al. (2013). The data were then analyzed through a descriptive qualitative method to obtain deeper explanation and understanding. The result shows that the novel portrays Michael Corleone as an antihero for having the identical characteristics of an antihero proposed by Wilson et al. (2013), namely empathy, humility, self-awareness, flexibility, and an ability to acknowledge the uncertainty. Therefore, it is found that the characteristics of an antihero are not entirely dominated by negative traits as argued by Pangestu (2017), Jati (2018), and Garcia (2013). An antihero may have some negative traits, but they also have some positive ones. The findings of this study also indicate that the original antihero is the antithesis of a hero because an antihero portrays human nature in general. Using Teun van Dijk’s concept of ‘news as discourse’ as the framework, I found that this newsgame followed the narrative structure of a traditional newspaper editorial very closely. I explain how the situation–evaluation–conclusion discursive model best describes how Easy Level Life conveys its political ideologies. I conclude by suggesting that this discursive model should perhaps become a benchmarking tool for future newsgame developers who aim to strengthen their arguments for social justice. Section Cultural Studies. AATI Online Working Papers. ISSN: 2475-5427. All rights reserved by AATI. ABSTRACT: This article examines the portrayal of Italian Americans in American media. The Order Sons of Italy in America (OSIA), the largest and longest-established national organization for men and women of Italian heritage in the USA, denounces the entertainment industry for damaging the collective reputation of Italian Americans. Particularly, the OSIA charges Coppola’s trilogy The Godfather with being “the principal agent responsible” for promulgating a discriminatory ethnic stereotype that all Italians are criminals, while accusing the series The Sopranos of having reinforced this notion. Yet, the authors of these works of fiction, both Italian Americans, maintain that exploring their own ethnic identities led them to utilize the Mafia as a metaphor for American society. We will see that, not only it is unjust to accuse a movie trilogy to be the “the principal agent responsible” for such stereotype, but I would submit that The Godfather has helped to mitigate the negative image of the Mafioso existing in American cinema long before Coppola’s films, turning it into a liminal figure conveying a positive impression formerly missing. An examination of early American gangster movie stereotyping and scholarship on Italian American studies will substantiate the claim that neither The Godfather nor The Sopranos have truly damaged the image of Italians in America. Paradoxically, the Italian-as-a-gangster stereotype has helped Italian Americans to break out of the margins.

    A GENEALOGY OF ANTIHERO∗ Murat KADİROĞLU∗∗ Abstract “Antihero”, as a literary term, entered literature in the nineteenth century with Dostoevsky, and its usage flourished in the second half of the twentieth century. However, the antihero protagonists or characters have been on stage since the early Greek drama and their stories are often told in the works of the twentieth century literature. The notion of “hero” sets the base for “antihero”. In every century, there are heroes peculiar to their time; meanwhile, antiheroes continue to live as well, though not as abundant as heroes in number. The gap between them in terms of their personality, moral code and value judgements is very obvious in their early presentation; however, the closer we come to our age, the vaguer this difference becomes. In contemporary literature, antiheroes have begun to outnumber heroes as a result of historical, political and sociological facts such as wars, and literary pieces have tended to present themes of failure, inaction, uncertainty and despair rather than heroism and valour. This study argues that Second World War has the crucial impact on the development of the notion of modern antihero. As a consequence of the war, “hero” as the symbol of valour, adventure, change and action in the legends and epic poems has been transformed into “antihero” of failure and despair, especially in realist, absurdist and existentialist works written during/after the Second World War. While a family may have fewer constituents than other social units, such as nations, the family may be more complex, as personal boundaries are blurred by intimacy. The needs and values of individual family members come into conflict not only with each other, but also with the necessities and conventions of the family as a collective entity. Authors and artists have regularly examined the issues and values of their respective societies through the lens of the family dynamic and its associated tensions.
