In fact, our instinct was to use the more formal style. However, when I asked his family what his preference would be, they were unequivocal: Barry! So, with all due respect, we’ve acquiesced and kept it casual. 2 EDITOR’S LETTER 4 BARRY GOLDWATER Although Barry Goldwater is best known nationally as a longtime senator and one- time presidential candidate, his love of poli- tics may have been surpassed by his passion for photography. He spent a lifetime carry- ing around a camera, and his favorite sub- jects were the ancient cultures of Arizona and the state’s unparalleled landscapes. INTRODUCTION On July 11, 1958, the Navajo Tribal Council created the Monument Valley Tribal Park by withdrawing 29,817 acres for protection and the development of tourism. The park contains the most spectacular mesas, buttes and pinnacles that rise above the high desert floor in the region. The park is located east of U.S. Highway 163. It is triangular-shaped with the north corner at Saddleback Butte, the southeast corner is 4.5 miles southeast of Rooster Rock and the south corner is 8 miles south of Wetherill Mesa (figure 1). The oldest rocks exposed in the area of this log are the reddish-brown mudstones and siltstones of the Permian Organ Rock Shale. The upper half of this 600 foot thick unit is exposed around the base of the mesas and buttes. Above the Organ Rock is the Permian DeChelly Sandstone that forms the massive cliffs of the mesas, buttes and the pinnacles. It is a fine-grained, quartzose sandstone that has a reddish color due to hematitic coatings on the sand grains. This eolian unit is 400 feet thick in the park. Unconformally overlying the DeChelly is the Triassic Moenkopi Formation which is a thin redbed sequence capping many of the buttes.

This study presents a cultural-historical framework of VCNP land use that will be useful to land managers and researchers in assessing the historical ecology of the property. It provides VCNP administrators and agents the cultural-historical background needed to develop management plans that acknowledge traditional associations with the Preserve, and offers managers additional background for structuring and acting on consultations with affiliated communities. Over the years the location of this occurrence has been lost and/or misplaced. This occurrence is not shown on the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission (ABC) map ofthe Monument Valley area (Young and others, 1964). Scarborough (1981, p. 221) reported that this shipment came from Hunts Mesa but did not show its source on plate 7 in that report. Recently, some information was located in the ABC files stored at the Department of Energy's Grand Junction Projects Office in Grand Junction, Colorado. This brief report summarizes what is known about the Sam Charlie No.1 uranium ­ vanadium prospect. LOCATION AND LAND STATUS The Sam Charlie No.1, uranium - vanadium prospect was located on Hunts Mesa approximately 10 miles northeast of Kayenta, Arizona at latitude 36° 53' 50" and longitude 110° 03' 30" (Figure 1). Hunts Mesa (in older reports, spelled Hunt's) forms the south rim of the Inter Valley of Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park (Figure 2).

    Harvey Butchart’s Hiking Log DETAILED HIKING LOGS (June 4, 1962 - March 16, 1963) Nankoweap Basin [June 4, 1962 to June 5, 1962] Allyn and I sat around resting and eating on Sunday. He wanted to try to beat Willie Steinkraus' record of four hours and 47 minutes for the cross canyon trip on Monday morning. (He did break the record with a time of three hours and 56 minutes and again with an incredible time of three hours and eight minutes.) Bob Powers and I saw him off at 5:05 a.m. after which I set out to see Saddle Mountain and various points in the Nankoweap Basin. At first I had planned for it to be a five day trip, but I finally decided to spend three days at it. As I get older, I seem to be getting less self-sufficient, and between loneliness and my shoes coming unstitched, I turned around after spending one day going to the bottom. First I drove outside the park and tried the road marked Saddle Mountain. I moved one fallen tree out of the way but I soon came to another that I couldn't budge. In trying to drive around it off the road, I got the car stuck and had to jack for at least 30 minutes to get it loose. I drove through some very pretty country but the road didn't seem to be taking me close to Saddle Mountain. In fact, from certain signs, I got the impression that it was going off the plateau down towards South Canyon.
