That tournament led directly to the founding of the U.S. Seniors Golf Association, which today is administered by the MGA at Golf Central. This legacy of senior golf was taken a step further in 1928 with the inaugural MGA Senior Amateur Championship. Over the ensuing 80 years, the MGA Senior Amateur has grown in stature to become the premier event for senior amateur golfers (aged 55 years and older by May 5, 2015). It is one of the most sought-after titles in the Met Area, and has been contested at many of the finest championship courses. The first player to exert some dominance in the Senior Amateur was Samuel Graham, who won in 1943 and 1944, and then again in 1946. Three years later, Thomas Robbins won the first of his four Senior Amateur titles, the last coming in 1955. He and Mike Mattwell, who dominated the event in the 1980s, are the only players to win four Senior Amateur titles. Other prominent champions of the Senior Amateur include three-time winner J. Wolcott Brown (1967-69), Mal Galletta Sr. (1984), Jerry Courville Sr. (1992), and Dick Siderowf (1996). The championship consists of 36 holes of stroke play over two days, with the field cut to low 30 and ties after the first round. All entrants must have a current USGA Handicap Index not to exceed 8.0 under the Men's USGA Handicap System and are subject to MGA Rules and Regulations. Age Classifications Senior: 55-59 years Masters: 65-69 years Super Senior: 60-64 years Legends: 70 years & older Prizes Overall Champion Runner-up Third Place Class Winners Low Gross and second Low Gross for all age classifications. *Except for the overall championship winner, all ties will be decided by date of birth. A player may win only one prize. Rather, John McEntee Bowman, a former stable boy who rose to become president of the Bowman- Biltmore hotels, envisioned a community for millionaire sportsmen, the first residential development built around a golf course. Focal point of the community would be an 8-story hotel, including private apartments for full-time residents and luxurious rooms for the well- heeled traveler. Private homes would be built on the grounds, serviced by the hotel. In 1919, Bowman purchased 583 acres from the Hobart J. Park estate on a hilltop in Rye, overlooking Long Island Sound. Work on the hotel began late that summer. Bowman then com - missioned Walter Travis to design 45 holes of golf – an 18-hole championship course, a sporty, less-demanding 18-hole test, and a 9-hole course for beginners and practice.

The club joined the USGA on Jan. 13, 1922, several months before the courses opened for play that summer. The West Course has hosted many memorable golf events over its history. Beginning with the 1923 U.S. Women’s Amateur, the course went on to host 44 PGA Tour events. The Thunderbird Classic came to Westchester in 1963, with Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus winning two of the first three years.

Vol. 42, No. 2, March–April 2012, pp. 146–165 ISSN 0092-2102 (print) ISSN 1526-551X (online) http://dx.doi.org/10.1287/inte.1120.0626 © 2012 INFORMS Assessing Golfer Performance on the PGA TOUR Mark Broadie Graduate School of Business, Columbia University, New York, New York 10027, [email protected] The game of golf involves many different types of shots, including long tee shots (typically hit with a driver), approach shots to greens, shots from the sand, and putts on the green. Although determining the winner of a golf tournament by counting strokes is easy, assessing which factors contributed most to the victory is not. In this paper, we apply an analysis based on strokes gained, introduced previously, to assess professional golfer performance in different parts of the game [Broadie M (2008) Assessing golfer performance using Golfmetrics. Crews D, Lutz R, eds. Sci. Golf V: Proc. World Sci. Congress Golf (Energy in Motion, Inc., Mesa, AZ), 253–262]. Strokes gained is a simple and intuitive measure of each shot’s contribution to a golfer’s score and was imple- mented by the PGA TOUR to measure putting in May 2011. We apply strokes gained analysis to extensive ShotLink™ data to rank PGA TOUR golfers in various skill categories and to quantify the factors that differen- tiate these golfers. Long-game shots (those starting over 100 yards from the hole) explain about two-thirds of the score variability among PGA TOUR golfers. Tiger Woods is ranked first in total strokes gained, and at or near the top of PGA TOUR golfers in each of the three main categories: long game, short game, and putting.

20th MGA Senior Open Championship BROOKLAWN COUNTRY CLUB Fairfield, CT August 29-30, 2016 History of the MGA Senior Open Though it is young as far as MGA championships go, the MGA Senior Open has a high profile among the top players in the Met Area. The already strong fields who gathered for the championship’s early years became even stronger in 2003 with the influx of several very accomplished 50-year-olds, headed by Darrell Kestner of Deepdale, a three-time Met Open champion, who won in his first year of eligibility in 2003 and again in 2005. Other recent champions of note include former PGA Tour winner Bill Britton of Trump National-Colts Neck (2006), two-time Met Open winner Bruce Zabriski (2007), and back-to-back winner Bobby Heins (2008 and 2009). Together with an ever-increasing number of top amateur competitors, these players have produced drama and excitement at recent playings of the Senior Open. The MGA Senior Open has been held at such storied venues as Tuxedo, Century, Metropolis, Fenway, Fresh Meadow, and Nassau. It is the largest event in local senior golf. The 36-hole event is contested at stroke play over two consecutive days, with the field cut after the first round to the low 40 and ties, and anyone within five shots of the lead. Due to the growing popularity of this event, the MGA added an 18-hole Sectional Qualifying Round for the Senior Open in 2013 to accomodate the growing demand of the championship. Past MGA Presidents Jeff Holzschuh (left) and Allan Small (right) are in the field for this year’s MGA Senior Open.
