WGA CADDIE SCHOLARSHIP FUND Est. 1956 2017 ANNUAL REPORT A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT BENJAMIN C. KIRSCHENBAUM PRESIDENT WGA CADDIE SCHOLARSHIP FUND Friends of the Caddie Scholarship Fund, This past year marked the start of a transition that creates both challenges and new opportunities. Since 1962, the Caddie Scholarship Fund has been linked with the Westchester Golf Association. The WGA provided staffing and support for all CSF activities. In 2017, the Metropolitan Golf Association assumed the responsibility of administering the operations of the WGA. This elevated the operation of the WGA tournaments and has been a great success. For the 2017-18 school year we granted 76 new scholarships to young men and women who worked in “service to golf” at our member clubs. We now have a total of 292 Caddie Scholars from our member clubs attending 147 different educational institutions and trade schools - a $4 million tuition commitment. We continue to grow our endowed scholarships. The first Tom Nieporte, Sr. Memorial Scholarships were awarded to two outstanding Winged Foot caddies. Sleepy Hollow honored their long-time caddie manager, Joe Barreiro, on his retirement with a new endowed scholarship. Joe has been a loyal supporter of the CSF and the members at Sleepy Hollow raised a record $166,000 for scholarships in his name. We hope other clubs and individuals will consider starting an endowed scholarship. Our golf events were again very successful. The Pro-Am was held in August, at Westchester Country Club; thank you to the membership and staff who helped make it a spectacular day. In July, we reconnected with CSF alumni who enjoyed a great day of golf at Manhattan Woods. The Marathon was held at Siwanoy and raised over $ 90,000. The Friends of the Fund event, which has created another means of connecting with our supporters, was hosted by Hudson National for the third year in a row. Greg Hickey held the second annual event to honor his brother, Chris, at the Country Club of Darien and raised in excess of $ 80,000 for the Christopher C. Hickey Scholarship Fund. As part of our partnership with the Evans Scholarship Fund, all of our CSF applicants were encouraged to complete their application in the fall to be considered for the Westchester Evans Scholarship and our own scholarship. 2 Seventeen of our area caddies submitted applications for both scholarships. Finally, I would be remiss not to advise all of our friends that after sixteen years at the CSF, Lauren Weller, our Chief Operating Officer, is leaving. Lauren has been a critical factor in our success and she will be missed. We wish her the best. As I started the letter, change creates opportunities. Effective January 1, 2018, the administrative services for the CSF will be provided by the Metropolitan Golf Association and the MGA Foundation. This will significantly increase our resources, particularly related to growing youth caddie opportunities and fund raising. We will have more about this partnership soon. Thank you to all our supporters. WGA CADDIE SCHOLARSHIP FUND OUR MISSION The WGA Caddie Scholarship Fund (CSF) fosters the core val- ues of personal responsibility, integrity and perseverance by giv- ing young men and women in service to golf the opportunity to further enhance their lives through the pursuit of higher educa- tion. The Fund provides college scholarships to qualified candi- dates based on financial need. OUR HISTORY The WGA Caddie Scholarship Fund was established in 1956 by renowned amateur golfer Willie P. Turnesa and his good friend Udo Reinach. With over 2,664 recipients since its founding, the Caddie Scholarship Fund has provided in excess of $20,000,000 in scholarship funding. OUR SCHOLARSHIPS The CSF is one of the largest organizations of its kind in the na- tion. Caddie scholarship awards range from $1,000 to $10,000 per year for undergraduate study or for study at an accredited trade school. Maximum awards are reserved for exceptional stu- dents with exceptional need. ELIGIBILITY Applicants must demonstrate financial need, have applied to or currently attend an accredited school, and have worked a minimum of two seasons in service to golf at a WGA member club. Service to golf includes caddying, golf course maintenance, and work in the golf shop, bag room or on the practice range. Club members and their children are not eligible to apply. 33 FUNDING The CSF finances scholarship awards primarily through contribu- tions from individuals, WGA member clubs, alumni, corporations, and foundations. NAMED AND ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIPS Named and Endowed Scholarships give donors an opportuni- ty to celebrate their commitment to education and golf.
