These goals play an important role in promoting social progress. The key characteristic of progressive cities should be their openness to the general public and equal accessibility for everyone regardless of their gender, race, age, or social status, and under the same conditions. Public buildings with their associated public spaces form an integral part of the city. For public buildings to be truly public these should follow the same principles as the open city. And it is architecture that has the power to design such truly public buildings. Unfortunately, Slovenia has not yet recognized that it could constitute itself as a modern state through the architecture of public buildings. Keywords: state, values of social progress, public building This article deals with the topical issues of the architecture of public buildings in Slovenia after 1991 viewed through the social values of progress. The introductory presentation of the issues and key terms (state, social values of progress, public building) is followed by an attempt to find the answer to the question which principles of the modern state should public buildings reflect and enforce, using the listed references (the primary reference being an essay by Richard Sennett entitled The Open City). -

Architecture of the 2oth Century The present book is a somewhat different overview of 2oth cen tury architecture in Slovenia. The selection of presented buildings is austere since it was dictated by the purpose of the book and its scope. The selected works are not only the outstanding buildings that came into existence in Slovenia in the last century. The authors of the book, architects and art historians, have selected typical creations of the past, characteristic evidence of progress in land development, theo retical thinking and architecture in our surroundings. The purpose of this selection is to encourage public debate and conservation evalua tion, and to facilitate better and more professional protection of all the outstanding historical buildings of the 2oth century, not only cul tural monuments and the creations of famous authors, the mainstays of the development of fine arts. The artistic value was one of the prin ciples of selection, since individual buildings and entities are to be considered as to their function, social value and historical relevance. We attempted to include as many architects as possible and all re gions of Slovenia. The chronological context of the book is defined as the period af ter the First World War, since the architecture created before 1920 has already been presented in another publication within The Euro pean Heritage Days Series. The final chronologicallimit of the selec tion was dose to the year 2000, although it is usually preferred to conclude the period somewhat earlier and evaluate the artefacts from a more distant point in time. The chronological definition of the be: ginning was further conditioned by a new creative enthusiasm after the First World War and the establishment of the first university in Slovenia in Ljubljana with a department of architecture. -

Art Spiritual Dimensions of Ukrainian Diaspora: Collective Scientific Monograph DOI 10.36074/art-sdoud.2020.chapter-9 Nataliia Fedorniak UKRAINIAN MUSICAL FOLKLORE DISCOGRAPHY AS A PRESERVING FACTOR IN UKRAINIAN DIASPORA NATIONAL SPIRITUAL EXPERIENCE ABSTRACT: The presented material studies one of the important forms of transmission of the musical folklore tradition of Ukrainians in the United States and Canada during the XX – the beginning of the XXI centuries – sound recording, which is a component of the national spiritual experience of emigrants. Founded in the 1920s, the recording industry has been actively developed and has become a form of preservation and promotion of the traditional musical culture of Ukrainians in North America. Sound recordings created an opportunity to determine the features of its main genres, the evolution of forms, that are typical for each historical period of Ukrainians’ sedimentation on the American continent, as well as to understand the specifics of the repertoire, instruments and styles of performance. Leading record companies in the United States have recorded authentic Ukrainian folklore reconstructed on their territory by rural musicians and choirs. Arranged folklore material is represented by choral and bandura recordings, to which are added a large number of records, cassettes, CDs of vocal-instrumental pop groups and soloists, where significantly and stylistically diversely recorded secondary Ukrainian folklore (folklorism). INTRODUCTION. The social and political situation in Ukraine (starting from the XIX century) caused four emigration waves of Ukrainians and led to the emergence of a new cultural phenomenon – the art and folklore of Ukrainian emigration, i.e. diaspora culture. Having found themselves in difficult ambiguous conditions, where there was no favorable living environment, Ukrainian musical folklore began to lose its original identity and underwent assimilation processes. -

It begins by summarizing the history and literary works of the Gottschee Germans, and secondly it deals with the historical novel Rebellion in der Gottschee by Karl Rom. Te novel was published in 1938 in German. It focuses on the great peasant revolt in Slovenia (Carniola) that took place in 1515. Te revolt was organized by the inhabitants of the Gottschee area against the violent landlord and was soon supressed. Based on image studies (imagology), the paper analyses the portrayal of the Slovenes and Gottschee Germans and discusses how Slavs (Slovenes) and Germans (Gottschee Germans) are represented in the novel. Belinsky was in good company with his assessment. Such sentiments are rife in the critical essays and articles of the first third of the nineteenth century. A decade earlier, Aleksandr Bestuzhev had declared that, “we have a criticism but no literature” (Leighton, Romantic Criticism 67). Several years before that, Pyotr Vyazemsky voiced a similar opinion in his article on Pushkin’s Captive of the Caucasus : “A Russian language exists, but a literature, the worthy expression of a mighty and virile people, does not yet exist!” (Leighton, Romantic Criticism 48). Spomeniki padlim v prvi svetovni vojni na Kočevskem v luči povojnih razmer Anja Moric UVOD Velika vojna ni prizadela le držav oziroma območij, kjer so bitke ne- posredno potekale, temveč tudi tako imenovane kraje v zaledju, med katere sodi tudi območje širše Kočevske na jugovzhodu Slovenije.1 Redko obljudeno kočevsko pokrajino so po dognanju jezikoslovcev v 14. stoletju večinoma poselili kolonisti z ortenburških posesti na zgor- njem Koroškem in vzhodnem Tirolskem (Petschauer 1984: 87). Možno je, da so bili med kolonisti v manjšem številu tudi koroški Slovenci (Simonič 1971: 9).2 Zaradi priselitve iz različnih krajev, kjer se je govorilo različne jezike in narečja, kot tudi zaradi stikov z okoliškim prebivalstvom, se je na Kočevskem razvilo zanimivo mešano jezikovno območje, kjer je 600 let – vse do preselitve večine prebivalstva v nemški rajh v letih 1941/42 – prevladovala raba Kočevarščine3 – srednjeveške nemščine s primesmi slovenščine (glej Schröer 1869; Hauffen 1895; Tschinkel 2004 itd.). -

The symbol’s broad ability to personify tragic events created a versatile system of imagery that transcended its folkloric derivations into the realm of Russian literature, becoming a constant literary device from eighteenth century to post-Soviet fiction. The vampire’s literary usage arose during and after the reign of Catherine the Great and continued into each politically turbulent time that followed. The authors examined in this thesis, Afanasiev, Gogol, Bulgakov, and Lukyanenko, each depicted the issues and internal turmoil experienced in Russia during their respective times. By employing the common mythos of the vampire, the issues suggested within the literature are presented indirectly to the readers giving literary life to pressing societal dilemmas. The purpose of this thesis is to ascertain the vampire’s function within Russian literary societal criticism by first identifying the shifts in imagery in the selected Russian vampiric works, then examining how the shifts relate to the societal changes of the different time periods. -

MAY 2012 President’s Message: We hope that you enjoy receiving this newsletter three times a year instead of two. One of the requests made at our special meeting for members in August 2010 was to get information about Maennerchor activities to all of you in a more timely manner. We think this has been a big step in achieving that goal. Many thanks to Herman who really shines as Newsletter Editor. Thanks also go out to our Thursday Men’s Group. Many have become active in helping the club in one way or another and this is appreciated. To all of you who enjoy seeing new sights and doing a bit of traveling. We are considering two overnight trips during 2012. One is to the Thousand Islands in August and the other to Longwood Gardens and Philadelphia’s European Christmas Market in December. You will find more information later in this newsletter. Also, if there are any destinations that you would like us to consider for future trips please let Walter/Doris or Richard/Hildegard know. CALL FOR SINGERS!!!!!S I know you are out there someplace. Please consider joining us and our chorus. Although we have been fortunate to maintain our chorus, we have also lost far too many due to illness or failing voices. We rehearse during the months of September through May with January off. Rehearsals begin at 6:45 p.m. and end about 8:30 p.m. Our music director, Dr. Dorcinda Knauth, along with the Music Committee, choose the music for our spring concert and fall sing along keeping in mind the abilities of the singers and the desires of our audience.
