Resource Guide P a g e | 1 Welcome to the 2020-2021 True Colors Resource Guide! Updated annually, the Guide offers an extensive array of resources across a wide range of sexual and gender minority youth issues and services in Connecticut, regionally, and in some cases, nationally. In addition, the Guide provides a wealth of information on such topics as risk and protective factors, talking with children about gender, impact of family response, etc. True Colors works to create a world where LGBTQ+ youth thrive. Our mission is to ensure LGBTQ+ youth — of all backgrounds — are safe, valued, and able to be their authentic selves. We do this by providing education, advocacy, and support to LGBTQ+ youth, their families, communities, and those who work with them. Our work is supported by a volunteer Board of Directors, five full-time staff, numerous student interns, scores of volunteers, donors, private and corporate funders—and people just like you! Although the True Colors Resource Guide is offered at no charge, donations to cover postage or printing are always welcome. The Guide is also available electronically at www.OurTrueColors.org. True Colors, Inc. Programs Include: One-on-One Mentoring Program True Colors provides Connecticut’s only LGBTQ+ Youth Mentoring Program, bringing the benefits of mentoring directly to LGBTQ+ youth in out-of-home care since 2005. In addition to One-on-One Mentoring, this program provides weekly group activities giving youth the opportunity for healthy peer interactions. Annual Conference Our flagship program, the annual True Colors conference, began in 1994 and is now the largest and most comprehensive LGBTQ Youth issues conference in the world! Each year, more than 3,500 youth, educators, social workers, clinicians, family members and clergy participate in 250+ workshops, films, activities and events over the course of the two-days. Youth Leadership Development When we began working with schools in 1994, there were only four Gay/Straight Alliances in Connecticut. Now, there are more than 250. True Colors played a role, directly or indirectly, in the development of many of them. We’ve conducted dozens of GSA Summits, forums and trainings for youth, empowering them to launch, grown and maintain programs in their schools. We also offer many leadership development opportunities for our organizers and volunteers. Safe Harbors Task Force True Colors collaborates with the State Department of Children and Families to identify and meet the needs of LGBTQ+ youth in out-of-home care through policy, programming and advocacy work. In addition, we recruit foster parents for adolescents. Cultural Competency Training Our nationally recognized Values Clarification and Cultural Competency Training Curriculum stands as the only curriculum ever published by the Child Welfare League of America. Each year, we train approximately 6,000 youth-serving professionals, who in turn touch the lives of countless youth and families. The True Colors Resource Guide is an expanding, evolving resource, and many of the topics included have been requested by its users. JESUS CAME TO EARTH FOR THOSE CAST OUT BY RELIGIOUS AUTHORITIES AND SOCIETY. WE ARE THOSE OUTCASTS. LGB youth seriously contemplate suicide at almost three times 3X the rate of heterosexual youth. (The Trevor Project) LGB youth are almost five times as likely to haveattempted suicide compared to heterosexual youth. (The Trevor Project) 5X LGB youth from highly rejecting families are 8.4 times as likely 8.4X to have attempted suicide as LGB peers who reported no/low levels of family rejection. (The Trevor Project) 40% of transgender adults reported having made a suicide attempt. 92% of these individuals reported having attempted 40% suicide before the age of 25. (The Trevor Project) After I came out as gay at 17, I hoped that by being out, I would find the other gay people around me and we would share something in common. I didn’t meet many gay friends at the time, but I did meet Christians who insisted that being gay wasn’t God’s plan for my life. These new Christian friendships led to eight years of me trying to renounce homosexuality and become heterosexual. We can. Dear Family in Christ, It is hard to believe that it has been 20 years since our community was founded as an online discussion group! What began as a small group of gay Christians conversing on a virtual message board has grown into a long-standing, vibrant, in-person and virtual family of tens of thousands of LGBTQ+ Christians, parents, and allies representing a multiplicity of beliefs, traditions, ethnicities, abilities, gender identities, sexualities, and nations. We express our most sincere gratitude to those brave souls in our community who risked and endured so much along the way, sacrificed time and resources, and created this lush, green pasture in the wilderness for us to experience safety, affirmation, joy, and ultimately, God’s divine love. Not only can we thank the leaders of this community, but those who rioted in Stonewall; those who helped make gay marriage legal in the Netherlands, in Massachusetts, and eventually the entire United States; those who taught us to look beyond just the gay and lesbian experience into the vast expanse of sexualities and gender identities that constitute the LGBTQ+ family; those who helped secure increased employment protections under federal law; those who resisted racism and structural marginalization in LGBTQ+ communities and across society; those with disabilities who have advocated for increased access in every capacity and countless other siblings in Christ.

    The First Presbyterian Church July/August 2018 of Howard County Issue 7 Volcano in Guatemala Dr. O. Morton Harris, Jr. Volcan de Fuego erupted in Guatemala on Sunday, June 4, just seventeen days Co-Pastor before a small delegation from First Pres headed to Guatemala for a scheduled Dr. Sue Lowcock Harris visit. We knew that our partner presbytery, Union Maya Quiche Boca Costa, Co-Pastor wasn’t impacted; I’d gotten replies to my email queries the day after the Virginia Callegary eruption. The message was, “Thank you for checking on us. We’re ok, but please Director of Christian Education pray for those who are hurt, displaced or can’t find their family members.” The James Galdieri Boca Costa region is west of Volcan de Fuego, and the winds blew the ash cloud Director of Music Ministries to the east. Our usual route was impassable with as much as Church Sexton 3 meters (about 10 feet) of ash covering portions of the road. Even the detour Marla Youkers didn’t take us close enough to see too much of the impact. We crossed rivers Child Care Coordinator whose courses were diverted by large rocks deposited in river beds and saw gray Kathy Moore clouds that continue to rain ash near the cone of the volcano.

To be sure, over the years I’ve collected my fair share of rainbow-themed paraphernalia, and the Glitter of Pride Past still haunts every nook and cranny of my home. That such delightful visuals have become icons of hope and joy which are synonymous with the LGBTQ+ community is nothing short of redemptive, revealing that the glory of God shines through every life lived fully and authentically. But remember: clear, sunny skies don’t produce prismatic phenomena. Only storms give rise to rainbows. I was 16 when my older sister Rosemary came out as a lesbian. Given that our parents raised us in a conservative Pentecostal church, they did not take the news well. I followed their lead, doing my best to love the sinner, hate the sin, and pray the gay away. But these tidy proverbs could only delay the inevitable reckoning for so long.

    FILE NO. 190552 RESOLUTION NO. 258-19 1 [Supporting the Induction of Jose Julio Sarria into the California Hall of Fame] 2 3 Resolution supporting the inducting of Jose Julio Sarria into the California Hall of 4 Fame. 5 6 WHEREAS, Jose Julio Sarria was born on December 12, 1922, in San Francisco, 7 California; and 8 WHEREAS, Jose Julio Sarria was a Latino veteran of World War II serving in the 9 European theater and was honorably discharged in 1947; and 10 WHEREAS, During the 1950s, Jose Julio Sarria was a vocal critic of the criminalization 11 of queer people and queer meeting places, and would promote a groundbreaking sense of 12 gay pride and positive gay identity in performances at gay establishments such as the Black 13 Cat Cafe in North Beach; and 14 WHEREAS, In 1961, Jose Julio Sarria became the first known openly gay candidate 15 elected office anywhere in the world by running for the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, 16 and although he did not win his election, with more than 5,000 votes he placed 9th in a field of 17 32 candidates, thus demonstrating for the first time the existence of a "gay voting bloc"; and 18 WHEREAS, Jose Julio Sarria's fight paved the way for many lesbian, gay, bisexual, 19 transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) candidates who followed to seek and win elected office 20 across San Francisco, elsewhere in the United States and around the world; and 21 WHEREAS, In 1962 Jose Julio Sarria co-founded the Tavern Guild, the country's first 22 gay business association; and 23 WHEREAS, In 1964, Jose Julio Sarria proclaimed
