The importance of the science is apparent. The truths which form the basis" of sanitary science have been discovered by the medical profes- sion, scientists, boards of health, and sanitary engineers. In almost all classes of society there is a great and growing interest in sanitation. -

Landmarks Preservation Commission September 11, 1984; Designation List 171 LP-1287 PUBLIC BATH NO. 7, 227-231 Fourth Avenue, Borough of Brooklyn. Built 1906-10; architect Raymond F. Almirall. Landmark Site: Borough of Brooklyn Tax Map Block 955, Lot 1. On April 4, 1982, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a Landmark oJ Public Bath No. 7 and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site (Item No. 11). The hearing had been duly advertised in accordance with the provisions of law. Two witnesses spoke in favor of designation. There were no speakers in opposition to designation. The hearing was continued to June 8, 1982. One witness spoke in favor of designa tion. There were no speakers in opposition to designation . Two letters have been received in favor of designation. DESCRIPTION AND ANALYSIS When opened in 1910, Brooklyn 1 s Public Bath No. 7 was described as being the most ornate public bath which had been constructed in that borough; it was also the first in Brooklyn to boast a 11 plunge11 or swimming pool. None of . tts predecessors survive today. Designed by Raymond F. Almirall, Public Bath No. 7 is a striking example of the nee-Renaissance style employed for many of the public baths constructed in New York City during the first decade of this century. Use of this style had the effect of giving the act of bathing as much importance as those activities conducted in such similarly styled buildings of the per- iod as banks and libraries; cleanliness was thereby promoted. -

n Tuesday night, December 5, 1876, a fire occurred in the City of Brooklyn that shocked the nation. The Brooklyn Theater was situated at the corner of Johnson Street and Washington Street (now, it is Cadman Plaza). On the night of the fire, the play “Two Orphans” was being performed. The stars of the show were Harry Murdoch and Kate Claxton. When the fire was extinguished, it was discovered that 278 people were killed. In this essay, I will explore the events of the day of the fire, and what measures we still take today to prevent such a tragedy. The Building: The Brooklyn Theater opened on October 2, 1871. It was “L-shaped”. It touted many appointments and comforts for the day. It was built of brick and wood joist (Class 3). Most buildings of that time were either Class 3 or wood frame (Class 4). Its dimensions were 70 foot x 121 foot. It had two balconies and a main “orchestra level”. The “orchestra” level was also known as the “Parquet” and it could seat 600 people. The first balcony was known at the “Dress Circle” or “Gallery”. The first balcony could seat 550 people. The top balcony was known as the “Family Circle” and could seat 450 people. Illumination was provided by gas jet flames that were enclosed in wire cages. The flame for the gas lanterns could be controlled from a remote location. The Washington Street side was the main entrance to the lobby of the theater. Exposure 4 was the 1st Precinct of the Brooklyn Police Department. -

Alrashed All Rights Reserved 4 ABSTRACT Agent Based Modeling and Simulation of Pedestrian Crowds In Panic Situations Mohammed M. Alrashed The increasing occurrence of panic stampedes during mass events has motivated studying the impact of panic on crowd dynamics and the simulation of pedestrian flows in panic situations. The lack of understanding of panic stampedes still causes hundreds of fatalities each year, not to mention the scarce methodical studies of panic behavior capable of envisaging such crowd dynamics. Under those circumstances, there are thousands of fatalities and twice that many of injuries every year caused be crowd stampede worldwide, despite the tremendous efforts of crowd control and massive numbers of safekeeping forces. Pedestrian crowd dynamics are generally predictable in high-density crowds where pedestrians cannot move freely and thus gives rise to self-propelling interactions between pedestrians. Although every pedestrian has personal preferences, the motion dynamics can be modeled as a social force in such crowds. These forces are representations of internal preferences and objectives to perform certain actions or movements. The corresponding forces can be controlled for each individual to represent a different variety of behaviors that can be associated with panic situations such as escaping danger, clustering, and pushing.
