Highlights in May/June This walk is a part of my sabbatical this spring and summer, which I have the privilege to take every five years for three or four months. One of my favorite memories from those first few weeks was the parish the Youth Room picnic at Auerfarm in Bloomfield, a day on which I encountered so much of what I would come to love about St. James’s: the heartfelt worship, the gleeful noise of children, the May 5 fantastic music, the delicious food, and the many hands joyfully working together to make Confirmation Class #12 at it all possible. I knew for sure that I was going to love being your priest that day. 11am Wednesday, May 29 When the opportunity presented itself to have Confirmation take place at the picnic at Pre-Confirmation Dinner, Auerfarm this year, I couldn’t think of a better way to welcome our newest Episcopalians. 5:30pm The confirmands have spent the year learning about the Episcopal Church, its history, liturgy, and theology, and discerning what it is they believe. This year’s picnic is the perfect opportunity to celebrate their profession of faith and welcome them as members of this amazing parish. Youth Events Alongside the plans and preparations for this year’s confirmation, we are also working hard May/June to prepare for the mission trip to Ecuador! Ten youth and five adults will make this journey together, and we could not be more excited about the work that God is calling us to do Saturdays, April 27, alongside the Partners for Andean Community Health in the clinic in Riobamba. May 18 and June 9 Mission Trip Car Washes in In addition to an international medical mission, this summer has another adventure in the St. James’s Parking Lot store for me, as Bob leaves for his sabbatical. I am so grateful to all of you who have offered to help in lots of different ways while he is away. Sunday, May 26 Youth Group Olympics! Thank you, everyone, for a great first year at St. James’s, and I’m looking forward to all that 5-7pm lies ahead for us this summer! Sunday, June 2 Confirmation and Parish Picnic at Auerfarm in Bloomfield, 10am July 6-15 Mission Trip to Ecuador Bring a Friend to Church 2 From the Organist & Choirmaster ear Parishioners, D Thanks to the many volunteers who managed a crowd of nearly 500 people, the Vienna Boys Choir concert on April 2nd was a huge success! And on the heels of this concert we are planning what I know will be another extraordinary evening of music and outreach to the community. The concert on April 2nd alone brought several hundred new people into the church, drawing lots of attention to what we do here. If you attended the concert, missed it, or weren't sure if you wanted to go, I highly recommend coming to hear VOCES8 [pronounced voh-ches-eight (eight voices)]. VOCES8 is one of the very few leading choral ensembles in the world. We are truly thrilled to have them come to St James's on Tuesday, October 22 at 7pm. Tickets are available at www.eventbrite.com. VOCES8 has performed at many notable venues including Wigmore Hall, Bridgewater Hall, Elbphilharmonie, Cité de la Musique, Vienna Konzerthaus, Tokyo Opera City, NCPA Beijing, Mariinsky Theatre Concert Hall, Victoria Concert Hall Singapore and the Palacio de Bellas Important Dates Artes Mexico City. This season they will add the Sydney Opera House, Muziekgebouw aan’ t Sunday, May 5 IJ and La Seine Musicale Paris to that list. Keen musical collaborators, this season will see Choral Evensong, 5pm concerts with the Academy of Ancient Music, Manchester Camerata, the Edvard Grieg Kor, Hugo Ticciati, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte-Carlo, and with baroque violinist Rachel Podger, with whom the critically acclaimed ‘Guardian Angel’ project will continue. Concerts at St. James’s Touring highlights of the season include concerts throughout the UK and Europe, across USA Friday, May 31 and Japan, and debut visits to Australia and Lithuania. Grand Organ Music of With an on-going programme of recordings, videos and live broadcasts, VOCES8 is heard Great Britain regularly on international television and radio. The ensemble is a Decca Classics artist and Re-dedicatory recital of the St. has released acclaimed recordings that have all reached the top of the classical charts.     Every Taylor Swift Song Ranked From Worst To Best So, I recently posted my blog post about how I ranked Taylor Swift’s Albums. That, in and of itself, was a hard thing for me to do. Taylor Swift is one of my, if not my, favorite singer of all time. There is just something about her music that I connect to really well, more so than a lot of other artists. In the interest of wanting to make more posts about music in general (Not only T-Swift), but I’ve also decided to rank her songs from worst to best. Now, a quick disclaimer. I am only doing the songs from her albums, including the ones on deluxe editions. I am not rating any acoustic versions or anything like that though. I am also not rating any songs that she appears on. (Such as “I Don’t Want To Live Forever” and Highway Don’t Care”). I am, however, including songs on her albums that other people appear on (“Everything Has Changed” “End Game”). I also forgot to add in “Safe and Sound” feat. The Civil Wars, so I apologize for that. Also, please be aware that these are my own personal opinions as of right now. I’m ranking the songs based on 1. Lyrics and 2. How much I actually enjoyed the song. For me, a song that I can enjoy is better than a song that might be better “lyrically.” Enough of this explanation though.     What liking Taylor Swift taught me about deviating from societal norms Graphic by Emily Qian I’ve never had a good answer when people asked me what music I liked. Usually, I would default to an evasive response, like “oh, everything” or even better, “anything but country.” Sometimes, I found myself trying to give answers that aligned with the other person’s taste or, worse, with what I thought they expected me to listen to. But in truth, none of these answers were completely accurate. My music taste has always been hard to define. I love kicking back to Kendrick Lamar albums, but can also jam to hits from the 70s and 80s at the same time. And perhaps most jarring of all, I love Taylor Swift. Revealing this fact would almost always precipitate some level of surprise. When you think of Swifties, you probably don’t envision 16-year-old boys. Gut-reactions like these are fundamentally built upon perceptual categorizations of others into what they “should” be. Teenage boys should be interested in trap or rock, not Taylor Swift. Likewise, the traditional Swiftie should be a teenage girl who became infatuated with Taylor’s definition of music and femininity at a young age. Few of these characteristics are mine. A problem arises when we stereotype and label others at first glance, even if it’s on an implicit level, because they fuel specious and misleading societal norms. These norms are what end up dictating our music tastes, boxing people into what tunes they ought to be drawn to and ultimately controlling our enjoyment.
