Listed on these pages are the burial sites of personnel who served in the and Marine Corps during the war. Details have been obtained from various sources, as shown at the end of the list. It is to be assumed that there are errors in certain details and I invite readers to send in any corrections or additions to the list, which be included in future updates, which will be posted periodically. John Adams, Ordinary Seaman, CSS , joined at , August 15, 1863, reduced to Landsman, February 16, 1864; missing in action, June 19, 1864, during the engagement with the USS Kearsarge , off Cherbourg, , presumed drowned. [1]

George Appleby, Yeoman, CSS Alabama born in New Brunswick, resided in Liverpool; reduced in rank to Seaman on May 21, 1863; killed in action, June 19, 1864, during the engagement with the USS Kearsarge , off Cherbourg, France. [1]

Fred W. Arents, of Richmond, , Third Assistant Engineer, CSS Chattahoochee , killed aboard that vessel, when a boiler accidentally exploded on Wednesday, May 27, 1863, on the Apalachicola River, . He is buried at the First United Methodist Church cemetery, Chattahochee, Florida. [5]

Richard F. Armstrong, Lieutenant, CSS Alabama , born in Georgia; wounded, June 19, 1864, off Cherbourg, France, during the engagement with the USS Kearsarge . Died in 1904, at Halifax, , . [1]

Harrison Baker served in the CS Navy during the war. He was born on March 7, 1824 and died on January 5, 1904. He is buried at Magnolia Cemetery, East Baton Rouge, LA. [4]

Raphael Barbee served in the CS Navy, aboard the CSS William H. Webb . He was born on February 21, 1842 and died on September 10, 1909. He is buried at Graceland Orange Grove Cemetery, Lake Charles, LA. [4]

A.G. Bartelli, Captain's Steward, CSS Alabama, drowned June 19, 1864, off Cherbourg, France, during the engagement with the USS Kearsarge. [1]

Marsden Bellamy was born on January 14, 1843 and died on December 1, 1909. During the war he served as Assistant Paymaster aboard the CSS Richmond. He is buried at the Oakdale Cemetery, Wilmington, . [5]

Charles H. Berry, of Tampa, Florida, Quartermaster, CSS Chattahoochee , killed aboard that vessel, when a boiler accidentally exploded on Wednesday, May 27, 1863, on the Apalachicola River, Florida. He is buried at the First United Methodist Church cemetery, Chattahochee, Florida. [5]

William B. Bilbro, of Columbus, Georgia, Pilot, CSS Chattahoochee , killed aboard that vessel, when a boiler accidentally exploded on Wednesday, May 27, 1863, on the Apalachicola River, Florida. He is buried at the First United Methodist Church cemetery, Chattahochee, Florida. [5]

Charles H. Bishop, Private, Company B, CSMC; born December 15, 1844; resided in Beaufort County, North Carolina; died September 18, 1877; buried First Presbyterian Church Cemetery, , North Carolina. [8]

Samuel Peters Blanc was a Midshipman in the Confederate Navy. He is shown as being Executive Officer of the ill fated CSS Chattahoochee in May 1864, and commanded the torpedo boat Hornet , on the , Virginia, in January, 1865. He died in 1888 and is buried at St. Louis Cemetery, , LA. [4]

George Washington Bowen, Private, CSMC; born December 30, 1833; died July 21, 1898; buried family cemetery, Route 32, Washington County, North Carolina, over the border from Beaufort County. [8]

William Bradford, Ordinary Seaman, CSS Alabama , missing in action, June 19, 1864, off Cherbourg, France, presumed drowned. [1]

Harrison Graves Brady, Landsman, CSS Baltic , was born on July 29, 1844. He had also served as a Private in Company D, 19 th Mississippi Infantry. He died on July 19, 1908, and is buried at the Barbee Cemetery, Coahoma County, Mississippi. [10]

James T. Brady, Ordinary Seaman, CSS Virginia; born May 5, 1839; died November 28, 1908; buried at Marlin, . [Information courtesy of Mr. Joseph C. Ford, 2374 N. A.R. Brand, Fireman, died at Elmira Prison Camp, New York, on January 4, 1865, and is buried at the cemetery there. [9]

Daniel Gonzalez Brent, 2 nd Lieutenant, Confederate States Marine Corps, was born on April 17, 1842, and died on November 28, 1918. He is buried in St. Michael's Cemetery, Pensacola, Florida. [5]

Samuel Brewer, Seaman, CSS Alabama , aged 23 in 1862; born in Liverpool; transferred to CSS Tuscaloosa on June 21, 1863; died in Liverpool, 1886. [1]

William Briggs, Corporal, Company C, CSMC; born Baltimore, Maryland; enlisted at Mobile, Alabama, August 15, 1861; died at Camp Beall, Drewry's Bluff, Virginia, June 22, 1862; buried Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond, Virginia. [8]

William Browne, CSMC, died April 4, 1865, at the Elmira Prison Camp, New York, and is buried there. [9]

John Buckley, Ordinary Seaman, CSS Alabama , missing in action, June 19, 1864, off Cherbourg, France, presumed drowned. [1]

Levi Francis Buckner, Private, Company D, CSMC; conscripted Blount County, Alabama, March 3, 1863; died November 11, 1923; buried Hullett's Chapel Cemetery, Springfield, Alabama. [8]

James Dunwody Bulloch, CS Navy. Born near Savannah, Georgia, June 25, 1823. Well known Confederate naval agent who operated out of during the war. Gave an account of his services in the two volume work THE SECRET SERVICE OF THE CONFEDERATE STATES IN EUROPE. Remained in England after the war, as he was excluded from the amnesty. Died on January 7, 1901 and is buried at Toxteth Park, Liverpool, England. [2]

Edward Dean Burrell, Seaman, CSS Alabama, captured June 19, 1864, and paroled. After the war, joined the merchant marine service and died at sea, November 28, 1865. Buried in Colaba, Bombay, India. [2]

Ceorge Caigh, who served in the Confederate States Navy, is buried at Chestnut Street Cemetery, Apalachicola, Florida. [5]

John Caren, CS Navy, died in March 1914. Buried in Anfield Cemetery, Liverpool, England, plot 7, grave 642, Church of England. [2]

Dominic Cattinetti, who served in the Confederate States Navy, is buried at Chestnut Street Cemetery, Apalachicola, Florida. [5]

Henry de Ballatin Claiborne was a Lieutenant in the Confederate Navy, aboard the CSS Atlanta. He was born in 1838, died in 1872 and is buried at the Metairie Cemetery, Metairie, LA. [4]

John E. Clark, Seaman, CSS Resolute , was born on February 11, 1837 and died January 12, 1929. He is buried at St. Vincent de Paul Cemetery, New Orleans, LA. [4]

J.W. Clark served in the Confederate Navy during the war. He died on November 11, 1864 in New Orleans, but his exact burial site is unknown. [4]

John F. Clooney was a builder in the Confederate Navy during the war. He was born on October 14, 1836, died April 22, 1924, and is buried at Graceland Orange Grove Cemetery, Lake Charles, LA. [4]

Charles Colson, Ordinary Seaman, CSS Alabama , born in England; missing in action, June 19, 1864, off Cherbourg, France, presumed drowned. [1]

Edward Conn, of Apalachicola, Florida, Coal Heaver, CSS Chattahoochee , killed aboard that vessel, when a boiler accidentally exploded on Wednesday, May 27, 1863, on the Apalachicola River, Florida. He is buried at the First United Methodist Church cemetery, Chattahochee, Florida. [5]

William Conn, Seaman aboard the CSS General Beauregard, died on May 9, 1862, and is buried at Soldier's Rest, Elmwood Cemetery, Memphis, Tennessee. [3]

Edward Cope, Seaman, CSS Chattahoochee , had also served in the Confederate Army. He was born on September 8, 1841, died on September 3, 1894, and is buried at St. John's Cemetery, Pensacola, Florida. [5]

W.D. Crocker, Seaman CSS Albemarle, died at the Elmira Prison Camp, New York, on March 25, 1865, and is buried there. [9]

Thomas M. Crossan, (1819-1865), Lieutenant in the North Carolina Navy, is buried at the Somerville Cemetery, Warrenton, North Carolina. [5]

Thomas C. Cuddy, Gunner, CSS Alabama , born in Charleston, South Carolina; drowned January 19, 1865, in the foundering of runner Lelia .

Simeon W. Cummings, Third Assistant Engineer, CSS Alabama ; born in New York; accidentally killed at , South , on August 3, 1863. Originally buried at Saldanha Bay, but remains removed in 1994 and reburied at Columbia, Tennessee. [1] & [5]

Joseph Diggs served in the Confederate Navy and also as a Private in Company B, Chalmette Regiment, Militia. He was born in 1832, died on November 8, 1867, and is buried at the Locust Grove Cemetery, New Orleans, Louisiana. [4]

Isaiah Dillon, Landsman, CSS Arctic died on May 6, 1864, and is buried at the Oakwood Cemetery, Raleigh, North Carolina. His headstone shows his rank as Gunner and service aboard the CSS Neuse. [5]

Asa Douglas, Captain, CSS Sumpter, died on May 18, 1906, and is buried at the St. Vincent de Paul Cemetery, New Orleans, Louisiana. [4]

Charles Douglas, Second Class Fireman, CSS Chattahoochee , killed aboard that vessel, when a boiler accidentally exploded on Wednesday, May 27, 1863, on the Apalachicola River, Florida. He is buried at the First United Methodist Church cemetery, Chattahochee, Florida. [5]

James Duncan, Captain of the Maintop, CSS Florida, killed in action off Fort Morgan, Alabama, September 4, 1862; buried at Melrose, Mobile, Alabama, on September 5, 1862. [See page 767, Series 1, Volume 1, Official Records of the Union and Confederate Navies in the War of the Rebellion. ]

Peter Duncan, Coal Trimmer, CSS Alabama , born in Liverpool; killed in action, June 19, 1864, off Cherbourg, France. [1]

James Eccles, born? 1837, Philadelphia, or February 2, 1833, Tyrone County, Indiana; enlisted June 12, 1861, at Warrington, in Company A, First Florida Infantry; mustered out April 6, 1862; reenlisted April 24, 1862 in Gamble's Artillery, at Tallahassee; transferred to Kilcrease Artillery, May 27, 1863; transferred to Confederate States Navy August 24, 1864; died September 11, 1867; buried in Old Warrington Cemetery, Escambia County, Florida. James F. Flinn (Flynn), Private, CSMC; enlisted Mobile, Alabama, August 7, 1863; died New Orleans, Louisiana, December 25, 1864; buried Cypress Grove Cemetery, New Orleans, Louisiana. [8]

Henry F. Frater, Seaman, CSS Selma , also served in the Confederate Army. He was born on December 27, 1841, died July 5, 1929, and is buried at the Beulah Baptist Church Cemetery in Beulah, Florida. [5]

George Townley Fullam, Master's Mate, CSS Alabama , was born on March 21, 1841, at Kingston-upon-Hull, in England. Joined the CS Navy at the age of 21, and signed aboard the Alabama on July 29, 1862. After the war, joined the merchant marine and commanded the steamer Marlborough, which was lost with all hands, at or near the Bay of Biscay, in November or December, 1879. Fullam left a journal of his service aboard the Alabama which was later published as THE JOURNAL OF GEORGE TOWNLEY FULLAM , edited by Charles G. Summersell. [1]

Francis L. Galt, Surgeon, CSS Alabama , born in Norfolk, Virginia; appointed Paymaster, January 25, 1863; died November 17, 1915, at Upperville, Virginia. [1]

Edmund Nicholas Gardien, Sergeant, Company D, CSMC; born La Rochell, France; resided Wayne County, Mississippi; married Elizabeth Caroline Langford, August 23, 1856; died Birmingham, Alabama, November 7, 1910; buried Elmwood Cemetery. [8]

John Glass, Seaman, CSS Manassas, was born in South Carolina in 1828. He died on January 30, 1877, and was buried at the Girod Street Cemetery, New Orleans, LA. This cemetery no longer exists. [4]

Samuel Z. Gonzalez was naval storekeeper in the Confederate Navy. He was born on November 3, 1817, died on March 16, 1907, and is buried in St. Michael's Cemetery, Pensacola, Florida. [5]

Thomas Gordon, who served in the Confederate States Navy, is buried at Chestnut Street Cemetery, Apalachicola, Florida. [5]

Alexander Grant was a Lieutenant in the Confederate Navy, who served aboard the CSS Missouri. He was born in 1825, died in 1902, and is buried in St. Michael's Cemetery, Pensacola, Florida. [5]

Israel C. Greene, CSMC, died on May 25, 1909, and is buried at Mitchell, South Dakota. [5]

Green Hall, Captain in the Confederate Navy, commanded the CSS Uncle Ben and the CSS Sachem in 1863, and later the CSS John F. Carr. He was captured off Indianola, Texas, on April 6, 1864. He died on November 18, 1890 and is buried at the Graceland Orange Grove Cemetery, Lake Charles, LA. [4]

James Hally, Private, Company C, CSMC; born Waterford, Ireland; died Richmond, Virginia, May 8, 1863, aged 28; buried Hollywood Cemetery. [8]

J.R. Hanna served in the Confederate Navy during the war. He died on July 12, 1864, and is buried at the Cypress Grove Cemetery, in New Orleans, Louisiana, which no longer exists. [4]

William Harbin served in the Confederate Navy. He died on September 30, 1864, and is buried at the Greenwood Cemetery in New Orleans, Louisiana. [4]

Samuel Hardige served in the Confederate Navy during the war. He died on October 19, 1864 in New Orleans, Louisiana, but his burial site is unknown. [4]

Andrew J. Hays, Captain, CSMC; previous service in USMC; died December 25, 1896; buried at Monroe County, Alabama. [5]

John Helms was Ordinary Seaman aboard the CSS Arctic. He was born on November 7, 1837 and was a resident of North Carolina. He died on November 3, 1920, and is buried at the Good Hope Cemetery, Bunnell, Flagler County, Florida. [5]

Eugene Henderson, of Tuskegee, Alabama, Paymaster's Clerk, CSS Chattahoochee , killed aboard that vessel, when a boiler accidentally exploded on Wednesday, May 27, 1863, on the Apalachicola River, Florida. He is buried at the First United Methodist Church cemetery, Chattahochee, Florida. [5]

James Hicks, born in Hampton, Virginia, June 14, 1805; listed as being a Captain in the Confederate States Navy, but this is not borne out in official documents; died in Mathews County, Virginia, September 5, 1872; buried at St. John's Episcopal Church Cemetery, Hampton, Virginia. [8]

Ben Holzman was a sailor in the Confederate Navy who is listed as the last survivor of the CSS Virginia. He was born on April 3, 1844, died on January 4, 1922, and is buried at the Hebrew Rest Cemetery, Shreveport, Louisiana. [4]

George Horwood, CS Navy. Died October 5, 1888; buried at St. James Cemetery, Liverpool, England, plot C, grave 28. [2]

William Wallace Hunter served in the Confederate Navy during the war. He was born in 1803, died in 1892, and is buried at the Metairie Cemetery, Metairie, LA. [4]

Duncan Nathaniel Ingraham, Captain in the US Navy, and then Captain in the Confederate States Navy, was born in South Carolina, December 6, 1832, and died October 16, 1891. He is buried at Magnolia Cemetery in Charleston, South Carolina. [5]

Frederick Mathew Johns, Paymaster's Steward, CSS Alabama , born in Liverpool; missing in action, June 19, 1864, off Cherbourg, France, presumed drowned. Family memorial in St. James Churchyard, Liverpool, Section C, Grave No. 432. [1] & [2]

John Johnson, Seaman, CSS Florida ; died of bilious fever, May 18, 1863, and buried at Rocas Island. [ORN 1, 2, 653.]

Edward J. Johnston, First Assistant Engineer, CSS Atlanta , was captured and imprisoned at Fort Warren prison, , where he died on October 14, 1863, aged 36 years and 9 months. [5]

B. Joince, Seaman, steamer Arrow, died on March 4, 1865, at the Elmira Prison Camp, New York, and is buried there. [9]

John Joliff, Seaman, CSS Chattahoochee , killed aboard that vessel, when a boiler accidentally exploded on Wednesday, May 27, 1863, on the Apalachicola River, Florida. He is buried at the First United Methodist Church cemetery, Chattahochee, Florida. [5]

Catesby ap R. Jones was born in Clark County, Virginia, on April 15, 1821. He resigned from US naval service in April, 1861 and was appointed Lieutenant in the Confederate Navy some weeks later. He was executive officer aboard the CSS Virginia during the engagement with the USS Monitor at in March, 1862. He later commanded the CSS Chattahoochee. He died in Selma, Alabama, on June 21, 1877, and is buried at the Live Oak Cemetery. [5]

George M. Jones, Engineer in the Confederate Navy, was born in 1832, and died on May 24, 1885. He is buried at the Catholic Cemetery in Madisonville, Louisiana. [4]

William W.J. Kelly was Paymaster in the Confederate Navy. He was born in 1792 and served at the Pensacola, Florida Navy Yard, and the Savannah station during the war. He died in 1878, and is buried at the St. John's Cemetery, Pensacola, Florida. [5]

Ferdinand B. Kennett, Midshipman in the CS Navy, served aboard the CSS Patrick Henry and the CSS Virginia (No. 2), during 1864-65. He is buried at the National Cemetery, Little Rock, Arkansas. [6]

William Kenyon, CSS Shenandoah , was born in Victoria, Australia about 1844, and died on November 14, 1915 at Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. He is buried at the Melbourne General Cemetery. James King, Ordinary Seaman, CSS Alabama , killed in action, June 19, 1864, off Cherbourg, France. [1]

Edgar L. Lambert, Lieutenant in the Confederate Navy, served aboard the CSS Gaines during the Union attack at in August, 1864. He died on February 13, 1901, and is buried at the Metairie Cemetery, Metairie, LA. [4]

Morris Lane served aboard the CSS Ponchatrain. He died on March 10, 1862, and is buried at Soldier's Rest, Elmwood Cemetery, Memphis, Tennessee. [3]

Enoch C. Lanpher, of Columbus, Georgia, Second Class Fireman, CSS Chattahoochee , killed aboard that vessel, when a boiler accidentally exploded on Wednesday, May 27, 1863, on the Apalachicola River, Florida. He is buried at the First United Methodist Church cemetery, Chattahochee, Florida. [5]

William S. Layard, painter by trade; aged 19, at enlistment, April 21, 1861, as Private in Company G, First Virginia Infantry; wounded and captured at Gettysburg; returned to duty, October 31, 1863; transferred to Confederate Navy, April 10, 1864; captured at Sayler's Creek; released at Newport News, June 15, 1865, after taking oath; died February 11, 1893, at R.E. Charles E. Lea, Master of the Issabel , was born in 1826 and died in 1864. His is buried at a private cemetery at Southport, (previously Smithville), North Carolina. [5]

Charles Harvey Levy, Chief Engineer in the Confederate Navy, was born on August 18, 1837, in Virginia. He had previously served in the US Navy before being dismissed in July, 1861, after he had accepted an appointment in the CS Navy. He saw service aboard several Confederate naval vessels, including the CSS Jackson, CSS McRae and the CSS Tallahassee. He died on January 17, 1926, and is buried at the Forest Park Cemetery, Shreveport, LA. [4]

Jacob Lind, who served in the Confederate States Navy, is buried at Chestnut Street Cemetery, Apalachicola, Florida. [5]

David Herbert Llewelyn, Assistant Surgeon, CSS Alabama , born in Wiltshire, England; drowned June 19, 1864, off Cherbourg, France. [1]

John Low, Lieutenant, CSS Alabama , born January 24, 1836, at Aberdeen, (resided in Savannah, Georgia, before the war); joined a Georgia cavalry unit at the start of the war, but resigned to accept an appointment in the CS Navy; transferred to CSS Tuscaloosa , June 21, 1863; died September 6, 1906, in Liverpool. Junius J. Lynch, Assistant Paymaster, CSS Florida ; died July 13, 1863, of consumption; buried in the Episcopal graveyard at . [ORN 1, 2, 654.]

John Newland Maffitt commanded the CSS Florida . He was born in Ireland in 1819, and resided in North Carolina before the war. He had served previously in the US Navy before resigning in May, 1861, to join the Confederate Navy. He also commanded the CSS Savannah and the CSS Albemarle. Maffitt died in 1886 and is buried at the Oakdale Cemetery, Wilmington, North Carolina. [5]

James Mair, Fireman, CSS Alabama , born in England; killed in action, June 19, 1864, off Cherbourg, France. [1]

John Malin served aboard the CSS Col. Lovell. He died on June 21, 1862, and is buried at Soldier's Rest, Elmwood Cemetery, Memphis, Tennessee. [3]

Charles King Mallory, Midshipman, CSS Chattahoochee ; killed in the boiler explosion aboard that vessel on May 27, 1863. Remains returned to his home in Virginia and interred at St. John's, Hampton. [See Maxine Turner's volume "Navy Gray: A Story of the Confederate Navy on the Chattahoochee and Apalachicola River's," page 89.]

Adolphus Frederick Marmelstein, Quartermaster, CSS Alabama , born in Baltimore, Maryland (resided in Savannah, Georgia, before the war); transferred to CSS Tuscaloosa, June 21, 1863; died November 21, 1922, at Savannah, Georgia. [1]

Michael Mars, Seaman, CSS Alabama , born in Ireland (resided at Bristol, England); died August, 1878, in , England. [1]

Henry McCormick, who served in the Confederate States Navy, is buried at Chestnut Street Cemetery, Apalachicola, Florida. [5]

Lewis M. McKinney, born in Alabama, served as a Private in the Confederate States Marine Corps. He died on September 20, 1911, and is buried at the Catholic Cemetery, Mobile, Alabama. [5]

S.H. McMasters, served in the Confederate Navy. He is buried at Beauvoir Cemetery, Biloxi, Mississippi. [5]

William Minnick served in the Confederate States Marine Corps. He died on September 24, 1864, and is buried at the Greenwood Cemetery, New Orleans, Louisiana. [4]

William Moore, of Florida, Landsman, CSS Chattahoochee , killed aboard that vessel, when a boiler accidentally exploded on Wednesday, May 27, 1863, on the Apalachicola River, Florida. He is buried at the First United Methodist Church cemetery, Chattahochee, Florida. [5]

John Robert Murray, Acting Master's Mate, CSS Selma, was born in 1841, and was killed in action at Mobile Bay, August 5, 1863. He was buried at the Odd Fellows Cemetery, New Orleans, LA. [4]

John Blount Muse, Ordinary Seaman, son of Commander William T. Muse, served aboard the CSS Arctic and the CSS Raleigh. He died, June 30, 1861, aged 19, at Warrenton, North Carolina; buried at the Old Warrenton Cemetery. [5; see also ORN 2, 1, 278 and 302.]

Frederick Myers, Ordinary Seaman, CSS Alabama ; missing in action, June 19, 1864, off Cherbourg, France, presumed drowned. [1]

George H. O'Neal, Assistant Paymaster, Confederate Navy was born on July 24, 1822. He served on the Savannah and Mobile stations during the war. He died on June 20, 1887, and is buried at the St. John's Cemetery, Pensacola, Florida. [5]

Benjamin Franklin Owens, who served in Company E of the Confederate States Marine Corps, is buried at the Hopewell Cemetery, near Hampton, South Carolina. [5]

Karl Pajorva, Ordinary Seaman, CSS Alabama ; killed in action, June 19, 1864, off Cherbourg, France. [1]

Thomas Potter, Fireman, CSS Alabama ; born in Liverpool; died February 3, 1867, in Liverpool. [1]

Joseph Price was born in North Carolina on October 26, 1835. He served as a Lieutenant in the Confederate Army before being appointed Lieutenant in the Confederate Navy. His service included stints on the CSS Georgia, CSS Sampson and the CSS Neuse. He died on May 15, 1895 and is buried at the Oakdale Cemetery, Wilmington, North Carolina. [5]

William Crapon Price was born in 1846 and died in 1932. He is buried at a private cemetery in Southport (formerly Smithville), North Carolina. His headstone mentions that he was a Captain in the Confederate Navy at the age of 18, but there is no official record of this. [5]

Christian Pust, Coal Trimmer, CSS Alabama , born in Germany; killed in action, June 19, 1864, off Cherbourg, France. [1]

David G. Raney, Lieutenant, CSMC, is buried at Chestnut Street Cemetery, Apalachicola, Florida. [5]

Charles W. Read, Lieutenant, was born in Mississippi, May 13, 1840; previously served in US Navy; served aboard CSS McRae; CSS Florida and CSS W.H. Webb ; died January 25, 1890, buried Rose Hill Cemetery, Meridian, Mississippi. [5]

J. Laurens Read, Acting Assistant Paymaster, CSS Florida, was the stepson of John Newland Maffitt. He died of , aboard the CSS Florida, off Cardenas, , on August 30, 1862; buried at Cardenas. [See page 765, Series 1, Volume 1, Official Records of the Union and Confederate Navies in the War of the Rebellion. ]

Francis B. Renshaw, Commander in the Confederate Navy was born on May 23, 1815, and during the war served at the Jackson station. He died on June 9, 1867, and is buried in St. Michael's Cemetery, Pensacola, Florida. [5]

John Seeley, Third Assistant Engineer, CSS Florida, died of yellow fever, August 30, 1862; buried at Cardenas, Cuba. [See page 766, Series 1, Volume 1, Official Records of the Union and Confederate Navies in the War of the Rebellion. ]

Raphael Semmes, Commander, CSS Alabama ; born September 27, 1809, in Maryland (resided in Mobile, Alabama before the war); died August 30, 1877, at Mobile, Alabama; buried at the Catholic Cemetery. [1] & [5]

James M. Sheffield, Landsman, CSS Virginia , was born in 1827 and died in 1895. He is buried at the Oakwood Cemetery, Raleigh, North Carolina. [5]

Christopher Shepherd, Boy, CSS Selma, was one of the wounded prisoners taken in Mobile Bay, August 5, 1864. Died, the same day, aboard the USS , and was buried in the Bay. [See the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Navies in the War of the Rebellion , Series 1, Volume 21, page 844.]

Michael Sheridan served in Captain Hay's company of the Confederate Marine Corps. He died on September 16, 1861, and is buried at Soldier's Rest, Elmwood Cemetery, Memphis, Tennessee. [3]

Arthur Sinclair, Jr., Sailing Master, CSS Alabama ; born in Norfolk, Virginia; died November 15, 1925, at Baltimore, Maryland. [1]

Mathew Sloan, Landsman, CSS Baltic , was born on June 25, 1848 and died on October 8, 1901. He is buried at the Magnolia Cemetery, Mobile, Alabama. A person of the same name is also listed as having served in the Confederate States Marine Corps, and it is unknown if they are one and the same. [5]

James Robert Smithwick, Ordinary Seaman, CSS Virginia (formerly USS Merrimack ) and CSS Albemarle, born March 25, 1822, son of Jimmie and Frances Smithwick. Died May 30, 1872; buried at Brown's Baptist Church Cemetery, Warrenton, Warren County, North Carolina. Gale W. Sparks was a Lieutenant in the Confederate Navy, who was involved in Torpedo service. He also served aboard the CSS Chattahoochee in June 1864. He is buried at the Magnolia Cemetery, East Baton Rouge, Louisiana. [4]

John S. Spear, of Florida, Landsman, CSS Chattahoochee , killed aboard that vessel, when a boiler accidentally exploded on Wednesday, May 27, 1863, on the Apalachicola River, Florida. He is buried at the First United Methodist Church cemetery, Chattahochee, Florida. [5]

William A.W. Spotswood, a Surgeon in the CS Navy, had originally served in the US Navy since 1828, resigning in January 1861, when his home state of Virginia seceded. He served at the Pensacola Navy Yard in 1861, and was later appointed head of the Officer of Medicine & Surgery in Richmond, Virginia. He died on September 7, 1891, aged 84 years and is buried at the Magnolia Cemetery, Mobile, Alabama. [5]

J.P. Steiner was Clerk/Purser aboard the CSS Col. Lovell. He died on May 18, 1862, and is buried at Soldier's Rest, Elmwood Cemetery, Memphis, Tennessee. [3]

John C. Stickney served in the Confederate Navy as Assistant Surgeon at Pensacola, Florida. He died on February 25, 1906 and is buried at the Greenwood Cemetery, New Orleans, Louisiana. [4]

John M. Stribling, Lieutenant, CSS Florida, died of yellow fever, September 12, 1862; buried at Melrose, Mobile, Alabama. [See page 767, Series 1, Volume 1, Official Records of the Union and Confederate Navies in the War of the Rebellion. ]

Constantine Sygalas, CSS Morgan ; originally served in the Confederate Army as a Private in Company G, 21 st Alabama Infantry. He was born on May 5, 1829, and died October 14, 1914. He is buried at the Magnolia Cemetery, Mobile, Alabama. [5]

George W. Tennent, First Assistant Engineer; previously served in US Navy; served aboard CSS Atlanta, CSS Fredericksburg and CSS Virginia II.

Died on October 2, 1906 at age 73, of congestion of the brain. Buried at the American National Cemetery, Mexico City, Mexico. His headstone mentions that he was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, but another source shows his birthplace as Georgia. Patrick Thompson, served in the Confederate Navy, vessel unknown, and is buried at the National Cemetery, Little Rock, Arkansas. [6]

James Hamilton Tombs was a Chief Engineer in the Confederate Navy. He was born in 1839, and was one of the operators of the Torpedo Boat David , when it attacked and sank the USS Housatonic in 1864. He died in 1929, and is buried in the Evergreen Cemetery in Jacksonville, Florida. [5]

Walter Van Ness, Ordinary Seaman, CSS Alabama ; drowned June 19, 1864, off Cherbourg, France. [1]

Leopold Ramie Vogel's headstone lists him as Acting Master's Mate aboard the CSS Florida during the war, but the list of Confederate States Naval Officers does not include anyone of this name. His gravestone shows he was born in 1842 and died in 1907. He is buried at the San Lorenzo Cemetery, St. Augustine, Florida. [5]

Joseph G. Walker served in the Confederate Navy. He was born on February 22, 1830, died on April 22, 1907 and is buried at the Graceland Orange Grove Cemetery, Lake Charles, Louisiana. [4]

William Anderson Wayne, First Lieutenant, and previously lieutenant in the US Navy, was born in Georgia, March 21. 1819. He died at Warrenton, North Carolina, August 4, 1863, and is buried at the Old Warrenton Cemetery. [5]

John Welham, Ordinary Seaman, CSS Alabama ; drowned June 19, 1864, off Cherbourg, France. [1]

John Welsh served aboard the CSS General Bragg. He died on May 13, 1862, and is buried at Soldier's Rest, Elmwood Cemetery, Memphis, Tennessee. [3]

J.S. Westmoreland, a sailor in the Confederate States Navy, is buried at the Elmwood Cemetery, Columbia, South Carolina. [5]

John Taylor Wood, Captain, C. S. S. Tallahasse , was born in Minnesota, and appointed from the state of Louisiana in the US Navy before the war. He resigned in April, 1861, and was commissioned in the Confederate Navy in October, 1861. Promoted to Commander in September, 1863, and then to Captain in the final months of the war, he had also seen service aboard the CSS Virginia , and also later participated in the capture and destruction of the USS Underwriter. He died in 1904, and is buried in Halifax, Nova Scotia , Canada. [7]

C. Worrell, Wardroom Steward, CSS Florida , died of yellow fever, August 15, 1862, off Nassau, New Providence; buried at Green Cay. [See page 764, Series 1, Volume 1, Official Records of the Union and Confederate Navies in the War of the Rebellion. ]

Clarence Randolph Yonge, Paymaster, CSS Alabama ; born in Savannah, Georgia; deserted January 24, 1863, at Kingston, Jamaica; later served as a recruit in the 25 th New York Cavalry under the alias J. Edward Davies; died about 1866, in Washington, D.C. [1]
