Rhondda Radio is run by volunteers for the community and is based at the Treorchy & Boys & Girls Club. If you wish to join us and become part of our friendly team while learning to broadcast on internet radio, broadcasting around the world, please contact us. There are no age restrictions but volunteers under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an appropriate adult. There are no upper age limits. All we ask for is a small monthly member contribution (Currently set at £5.00 per month) and a good level of commitment. CISWO (Coal Industry Social Welfare Organisation) is starting up a new social group in . The group is open to anyone who worked within the mining industry and will offer activities, which includes free trips, guest speakers, entertainment and bingo. It all starts on Thursday 6th October from 10.30am- 12.30pm and every other Thursday thereafter at the Cwm Welfare Hall (opposite the surgery). Glyncoch Befriending Group has been developed by Communities First and a dedicated team of volunteers to offer activities to older people. The group will meet fortnightly and will offer regular creative activities aimed at leaving participants feeling good. The meetings will initially run up to Christmas and if successful will continue into the New Year with quizzes, bingo and craft activities.

The meetings take place at Community Centre every other Wednesday from 12.30pm-2.30pm. 5th October–Stain glass painting, 19th October - Mosaic photo frame. Contact Matthew on 07880044595 for more information.

Cwm Taf UHB Taff Ely Public Forum is being held on Friday 14th October at 1.30pm-3.30pm (1.15pm registration) at St David’s Uniting Church, Gelliwastad Road, . The following topics will be discussed to which you are invited to express your views:  Understanding our communities: What is important to you and how you feel about your own wellbeing?  Primary Care: Ynysangharad and Pontypridd Surgeries are planning to merge: What does this mean to you as one of their patients?

Digital Fridays will be starting from Friday 7th October at Pontypridd Library and Capel Farm Resource Centre, . These are open access and are for anyone looking for low level digital support and will run from 10am-12Noon.

Temple Baptist Church, High Street, Pontypridd have two weekly meetings during school terms. Time Off for the over 50s takes place at 1:30pm until 3:00pm every Tuesday during school terms. Top Up Cafe meet at 2pm until 4pm every Friday at Temple on the Graig in Pontypridd. It's a casual drop-in cafe which is free to anyone who'd like to come in for a cuppa tea and cake. Occasionally there is armchair exercise (with many a comical moment) at a minimal fee given by a trained coach but joining in is optional, others just enjoy the company and a chat. The exercise is geared towards better co- ordination which is much needed as we get older but is suitable for all ages. Please ring 01443 651232 for more details.

The Llantrisant Parish Support is a group for those living with Dementia and their Carers. This is a joint project between Llantrisant Parish Church in Wales and Cwm Taf Memory Assessment Service providing an informal, safe and supportive environment within the community. This group is open to anybody in the Cwm Taf area that is affected by Dementia and is regardless of any religious persuasion or beliefs. The support group will meet on the 5th and 19th October from 11am to 2.30pm in Llantrisant Church Hall, Swan Street, Llantrisant Refreshments always provided but please bring your own packed lunch. Pontyclun Support Group for those living with dementia and their carers at Café 50, Day Centre, Pontyclun, from 1.30pm–3.30pm, on the 2nd and 4th Monday of the month. Enjoy a cup of tea, chat and social activities.

Aberfan Disaster 50th Anniversary Commemorations To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Disaster, where 116 children and 28 adults lost their lives, Cyfarthfa Castle Museum and Art Gallery will be holding an exhibition using reproduction newspapers, photos and archive footage from the time, to tell the story of the first 7 days of the disaster. Runs from October 21st to December 18th. In addition to this a series of events will also be held throughout the month:

Saturday 8th October: a commemorative concert at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff will include Ynysowen Male Choir and a combined choir from Ynysowen Primary and Rhyd Y Grug schools. It will also feature Sian Phillips and Michael Sheen amongst others performing newly commissioned poetry and prose in English and Welsh. Wednesday 12th October: a commemorative tree planting ceremony will take place at 1.30 pm at the Memorial Garden in Aberfan with children representing local schools. Her Worship The Mayor of Merthyr Tydfil will also be in attendance. Saturday 15th October: a commemorative event will take place at the Memorial Garden, Aberfan with representatives of The King’s Own Royal Border Regiment and The Royal Welsh Fusiliers who were part of the rescue team in 1966 and wish to pay their respects again. They will march from the Community Centre car park to the Memorial Garden at 11am. Refreshments will be provided afterwards in the Community Centre by Merthyr Leisure Trust. Monday 17th October: a poetry reading event (especially commissioned for the occasion) will take place at the Redhouse (former Town hall) in Merthyr Tydfil. There will also be the opportunity to view the digital photographic exhibition by American photojournalist I.C. (Chuck) Rapoport which runs until 29 October. Wednesday 19th October: the Presiding Officer of the National Assembly for Wales will be holding a commemorative event at the . Also Statements are due be made in the Senedd by First Minister Carwyn Jones AM and Dawn Bowden AM. Thursday 20th October: a commemorative service will take place at 7pm at St. David’s Church, Merthyr Tydfil including the Ynysowen Male Choir. This is being

8 organised by Merthyr Tydfil Council and is an opportunity for everyone in the area to pay their respects. Friday 21th October: the usual commemorative services will take place in the village of Aberfan. The first will take place at the Aberfan Cemetery Memorial at 0915 and will be the Mayor’s service and led by the Mayor’s Chaplain, including a wreath- laying ceremony. Later, in the evening, a commemorative service will take place at St. Mary’s Church Merthyr Vale, beginning at 7pm.

Free Lip Reading Class - Do you or a family member, friend, or work colleague suffer from hearing loss? Lip reading classes can help and are for those with hearing loss, their families, carers, friends & work colleagues as well as members of the public. Peer Support Group – Do you experience mild to moderate anxiety or depression? If so you are welcome to join a new peer support group to share experiences, provide mutual support and gain information and advice on how to manage

9 symptoms. Come along to the launch meeting at Dowlais Library on Monday 3rd October from 2 – 4pm for coffee and cake with friendly people.

Knit and Natter group meet at Dowlais Library on Fridays from 1.45 to 3.45pm to knit, crochet and natter. New members and learners are welcome for a chat and a cuppa.

IT Drop in Sessions – Do you need help to use the internet, websites, smartphones, tablets, emails and more? If so, call in to Merthyr Tydfil Library on Wednesdays from 2 – 3pm for some useful advice and support.

Merthyr Tydfil Anglers – meet every other Wednesday at the Ex Servicemen’s Club in Merthyr Tydfil and events and competitions are run throughout the year. Cwm Taf Stroke Prevention Campaign Coordinators will be supporting this new campaign which starts on the 24th October with World Stroke Day on Saturday 29th October. We will be highlighting the campaign messages with community groups and with patients at GP Practices and clinics.

Ashgrove Surgery 3rd Sector event We have worked with Ashgrove surgery to organise an event to showcase local 3rd sector organisations at the surgery during their busy Sat Morning Flu Clinic on Saturday 8th October. Among the organisations attending are NEST, Your Medicines Your Health, Welcome Friends, Volunteering advice, Drink Wise Age Well and Cwm Taf Care and Repair.

Flu Myth Busting at GP Practices. We have been attending GP Practices across Cwm Taf and speaking to patients to encourage them to have their flu jab. We have found this to be a very worthwhile

10 exercise and some patients who were planning not to have the flu jab reconsidered and took the opportunity to get their vaccine.

We are currently working in partnership with RCT Homes, Merthyr Valleys Homes and Merthyr and the Valleys MIND project “5 Ways to Well Being”, to arrange delivery of our Community based Fly Myth Busting sessions to residents of sheltered housing schemes throughout Cwm Taf.

World Mental Health Day: Two events are planned: RCT: Monday 10th October at the Rhondda Fach Sports Centre, East Street, Tylorstown, CF43 3HR from 9.30am - 3.30 pm.

Cwm Tâf Care & Repair Managing Better Casework Service For people aged 50+ with hearing loss and/or vision loss living in Merthyr & RCT to prevent hospital admissions. This is a cross tenure service and can help Owner Occupiers, Housing Association tenants and private tenants. A Healthy Homes Check will be carried out including a benefit check. Care & Repair are working in partnership with the RNIB & Action on Hearing Loss and aim to target home safety, home security, falls prevention, warm homes, digital inclusion and maximising income. Deafblind Cymru We work with a spectrum of people who have dual sensory loss i.e. both sight and hearing loss, varying degrees thereof. The vast majority of our members are older people who have acquired their sight and hearing loss over time, and use speech to communicate. Digital Communities Wales is a Welsh Government project which is delivered by the Wales Co-operative Centre. The Princes Trust in Merthyr and Pontypridd are currently looking to do a community project in both areas. Please contact Mandy Keating [email protected] with any information of projects that could benefit from their support.It could be a school or Youth Club that needs painting or gardening. 12

The idea of the project is that they fundraise for equipment needed, for example paint, and then complete the project. The dates that we are looking for are Week commencing 17 October and week commencing 24 October.
