NBA Court Realty Dan Cervone (New York University), Luke Bornn (Simon Fraser University), and Kirk Goldsberry (University of Texas) The Court is a Real Estate Market Throughout a basketball possession, teams fight to control valuable court space. For example, - being near the basket or in the corner 3 areas leads to high-value shots - having the ball at the top of the arc keeps many pass options open - being open and undefended anywhere on the court eases ball movement and minimizes turnovers. Using only patterns of ball movement such as passes, we are able to infer which regions of the court teams value most, and quantify the effects of controlling such regions. This leads to new spatial characterizations of team/player strategy, and value quantifications of positioning and spacing. For instance, we can compare the value of the space the ballcarrier controls with the value of the space his teammates control to better understand how different lineups manage on- and off-ball resources. Essays in Basketball Analytics Suraj Keshri Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2019 c 2019 Suraj Keshri All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT Essays in Basketball Analytics Suraj Keshri With the increasing popularity and competition in professional basketball in the past decade, data driven decision has emerged as a big competitive edge. The advent of high frequency player tracking data from SportVU has enabled a rigorous analysis of player abilities and interactions that was not possible before. The tracking data records two-dimensional x-y coordinates of 10 players on the court as well as the x-y-z coordinates of the ball at a resolu- tion of 25 frames per second, yielding over 1 billion space-time observations over the course of a full season. This dissertation offers a collection of spatio-temporal models and player evaluation metrics that provide insight into the player interactions and their performance, hence allowing the teams to make better decisions. Conventional approaches to simulate matches have ignored that in basketball the dy- namics of ball movement is very sensitive to the lineups on the court and unique identities of players on both offense and defense sides. In chapter 2, we propose the simulation in- frastructure that can bridge the gap between player identity and team level network. We model the progression of a basketball match using a probabilistic graphical model. We model every touch event in a game as a sequence of transitions between discrete states. We treat the progression of a match as a graph, where each node represents the network structure of players on the court, their actions, events, etc., and edges denote possible moves in the game flow.

  • Classification of NBA Salaries Through Player Statistics
1 Classification of NBA Salaries through Player Statistics William Wu, Kevin Feng, Raymond Li, Kunal Sengupta, Austin Cheng Sports Analytics Group at Berkeley Abstract This research creates a classification-based model that predicts the salary amounts given to NBA players in free agency. This was done through collecting player salary data through Spotrac and player statistics through Basketball Reference. Correlation analysis demonstrated that points, turnovers, VORP, and rebounds created a balanced and effective set of variables for unweighted KNN-classification. The former three statistics were standardized by year, while the latter statistic was standardized by year and position due to underlying relationships between those categories. After classification, the model revealed that volume statistics were most indicative of salaries within lower and mid-level players, while high VORP was common among all players making near-max to max salaries. Using test set data, the model was off by 1.21 clusters on average, but many outliers were due to gross over and undervaluation on the part of the franchises. The model was used to predict salaries for incoming free agents in the 2018 class, with reasonable projections that meet qualitative expectations. 1 Motivation In the NBA, player acquisitions in free agency can often have a critical impact on the fortunes of a franchise. In fact, several dynasties have been built on them - with the Miami Heat of the turn of the decade and the Golden State Warriors of today coming to mind. But perhaps more so than any other form of player acquisition in professional basketball, free agency is a double-edged sword.
