Curated by Luca Massimo Barbero, this 6-month cycle of installations will assemble paintings, sculptures and works on paper - both European and American, but predominantly Italian – from the holdings of the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Venice and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, New York, with a small number of additional private loans. This dynamic and innovative project sets out to provide a fuller understanding and contextualization of the post-war works in the Peggy Guggenheim Collection. A series of three two-month installations – examining in turn a succession of movements and artists with which Peggy Guggenheim was affiliated first in New York and later Venice - will present works by a strong group of post-war 20th century artists, including Edmondo Bacci, Francis Bacon, César, Joseph Cornell, Jean Dubuffet, Marcel Duchamp, Alberto Giacometti, Asger Jorn, Bice Lazzari, René Magritte, Henry Moore, Ben Nicholson, Mimmo Rotella, Giuseppe Santomaso, Tancredi, Laurence Vail, Victor Vasarely and Emilio Vedova. Themes and Variations provides an opportunity to present for the first time recent acquisitions of post-war art, including important works by Carla Accardi, Agostino Bonalumi, Costantino Nivola, Mimmo Rotella and Toti Scialoja, alongside previously acquired works by Edmondo Bacci, Lucio Fontana, Conrad Marca-Relli, Giuseppe Santomaso and Armando Pizzinato. A series of private loans will further strengthen the representation of Italian post-war art; it is in this context that the work of Mirko Basaldella will be presented in depth in the course of the initial February- March installation. -

PEGGY GUGGENHEIM @ ORDOVAS Peggy Guggenheim (1898-1979) is probably best known for her Venice collection, but the American born socialite turned art collector actually first exhibited her pieces in London and New York before settling in Italy. In fact, she even established a gallery in Britain, Guggenheim Jeune, which ran between 1938 and 1939, and which is now the subject of a new exhibition Peggy Guggenheim and London at Ordovas in Mayfair. RMN-Grand Palais/Gisele Freund © ARS, NY and DACS, London 2019 Located at 30 Cork Street, the location of Guggenheim’s London outfit is still a hub of contemporary art today and is just around the corner from the exhibition that is now commemorating its existence on Savile Row. Open between January 1938 and June 1939, Guggenheim Jeune exhibited the work of Jean Cocteau, Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali, Henry Moore, Rene Magritte and Max Ernst against many others. The first ever artwork she acquired was a sculpture by Jean (Hans) Arp, Tete et coquille (1933), who featured in a quarter of all exhibitions in London. And, it is the work of Arp, along with Yves Tanguy – the artist behind the gallery’s most successful exhibition, Exhibition of Paintings by Yves Tanguy (6-16 July 1938) – whose work is on display at Ordovas today, 80 years after Guggenheim Jeune’s closure. Photo: Andrew Smart The name – Guggenheim Jeune – was the idea of Guggenheim’s friend Winifred Henderson and it associates itself with both Guggenheim as the younger of two Guggenheim art giants (the elder being her uncle Solomon), as well as comparing itself to Bernheim Jeune, the leading Parisian gallery at the time. -

Ernst first learned painting from his father, a teacher with an avid interest in academic painting. Other than this introduction to amateur painting at home, Ernst never received any formal training in the arts and forged his own artistic techniques in a self-taught manner instead. After completing his studies in philosophy and psychology at the University of Bonn in 1914, Ernst spent four years in the German army, serving on both the Western and Eastern fronts. Early Training The horrors of World War I had a profound and lasting impact on both the subject matter and visual texture of the burgeoning artist, who mined his personal experiences to depict absurd and apocalyptic scenes. -

So even between my wife and me, ‘looking’ is an issue.” Giuseppe Panza, 20091 Giuseppe Panza di Biumo, along with his wife Giovanna, is recognized as one of the world’s foremost collectors of contemporary art. The collection, originally composed of around 2,500 works of art, is mainly representative of the most significant developments in American art from post- World War II to the 21st century. Along with a need to fulfill spiritual and inner quests, both intuition and reflection have inspired the collectors’ choice that would demonstrate, retrospectively, their far- sightedness. By devoting themselves to an in-depth focus on emerging artists and specific creative periods, the Panzas contributed to acknowledging the new art forms among both the general public and the art market. The Beginnings of the Collection: On the Road to America The collection ideally began in 1954 when Giuseppe, at the age of thirty years, traveled to South America and the United States, from New York to Los Angeles, where he discovered the continents’ captivating vitality of economy and culture. Upon his return to Milan, he felt the need to take part in the international cultural milieu. In 1955, shortly after his marriage with Giovanna Magnifico, Giuseppe purchased his first work of art by Italian abstract painter Atanasio Soldati. -

Guggenheim Presents Focused Exhibition on Seminal Work by Jackson Pollock, Opening October 3 Exhibition: Away from the Easel: Jackson Pollock’s Mural Venue: Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, 1071 Fifth Avenue, New York Location: Thannhauser Gallery 4 Dates: October 3, 2020–September 19, 2021 (NEW YORK, NY – September 18, 2020)—As part of the public reopening of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum on October 3, the museum presents Away from the Easel: Jackson Pollock’s Mural, a focused exhibition dedicated to the first monumental painting by American artist Jackson Pollock (1912–1956). Commissioned by visionary collector and dealer Peggy Guggenheim for her Manhattan home in the summer of 1943, during a pivotal moment in the evolution of Pollock’s artistic style, Mural was completed by the end of that same year. The current presentation is the first time this work has been on view in New York in more than 20 years and marks the painting’s debut at the Guggenheim Museum. Along with Mural, the exhibition features three additional works by Pollock. Nearly 20 feet wide by 8 feet tall, Mural is Pollock’s largest painting. The work was a breakthrough for the artist and marked a transformational year. During his brief time working as a custodian and preparator at New York’s Museum of Non-Objective Painting (the first inception of the Guggenheim Museum) in 1943, Peggy Guggenheim gave him a contract with a monthly stipend that permitted him to paint full-time. Her early support of Pollock’s work arguably established his career. Following the commissioning of this painting, the artist had his first solo exhibition, held at Guggenheim’s museum- gallery, Art of This Century, later that year. -

APRIL 2006 Charles Seliger with Phong Bui and John Yau by John Yau and Phong Bui On a sunny afternoon of last month, Rail publisher Phong Bui and art editor John Yau drove up to Mount Vernon to visit the home/studio of the painter Charles Seliger to talk about his life and work in conjunction with the current exhibit of his new paintings at Michael Rosenfeld Gallery (on view until May 13). While the three of us were sitting down for lunch after our conversation with his wife, Lenore, Seliger, in his casual and genteel manner, demonstrated an unusual gift—in a matter of less than five minutes, he duplicated all the American Presidents’ signatures nearly in order from memory. The list is included here in these pages. John Yau: The first observation I want to make is how much your work has changed. As far back as I can remember, paint has been your central medium, but you’ve recently been using colored pencils. Charles Seliger: It’s something I’ve wanted to try for a long time, to experiment and see what the results would be. I managed to prepare a surface with various mattegels and modeling paste, so that I could draw on it with colored pencils. There were limitations with pencils; you’re locked into their colors and can’t do very much blending. I explored it as far as I think I can go. But what I’ve accomplished satisfied me enough. Actually, three works in the show are made with this technique. Yau: You’ve gone as far as you can with colored pencils? Seliger: Yes, I think so.
