Richard Leahy SIX YEARS AGO RICHARD LEAHY bred his homebred, graded stakes-placed stakes winner Akilina to Malibu Moon. In February 2013 she foaled a chestnut bred and sold colt, and pragmatic, commercial breeder that he is, Leahy entered the colt in the 2014 Keeneland September yearling sale with Winter Quarter Farm, selling him Derby contender for $175,000. “I was disappointed with the price I sold him for,” Leahy recently admitted. “So Audible when the colt came back in a 2-year-olds in training sale, I bought him back.” Leahy paid $135,000 for the New York-bred colt he named Governor Malibu, but because he focuses on selling colts and racing fllies, he worked with his trainer to fnd partners, and Jump Sucker Stable joined Leahy’s Oak Bluff Stables as the majority partner in the horse that went on to be a multiple graded stakes-placed stakes winner, with runner-up fnishes in the Peter Pan Stakes and Jim Dandy Stakes (both G2). He earned just more than $650,000. In the summer of 2016, Leahy found himself in a similar position. He had sold his yearling colt by Into Mischief out of homebred Blue Devil Bel (by Gilded Time) at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga sale of preferred New York-bred yearlings for $175,000, the same price Governor Malibu had brought, with the same seller’s remorse, but not, unfortunately, the same outcome. “I felt exactly the same way as I did with Governor Malibu,” Leahy said. “And I
