New York-bred Yearlings Soar Along with Record-Setting Keeneland September Market

While the 13-day Keeneland Sep- tember yearling sale set a new mark for average ($129,335) and grossed more than $337 million, the contingent of New York-breds in the marathon sale set its own benchmarks. The New York-bred average price and median improved by 24.1% over last year, total sales were up by more than 31.1%, and buy-backs—while elevated in the ear- ly books—posted a significant decline compared to last year. This year 76 New York-bred yearlings were offered, comparable to last year’s group of 75. Gross sales were $5,530,500, up from $4,064,200 in 2017. According- ly, this year’s average price of $97,026 was up over $78,158 last year. The me- dian price of a New York-bred, $45,000, was up 25% over last year’s $36,000.

New York-bred buy-backs, too, went in the right direction year-over-year. Over the course of the auction, 25 of the year- lings were listed as buy-backs, which was significantly lower than 2017 when 52 of 75 sold for a 30.7% buy-back rate. While the strong New York-bred me- dian is always a positive indicator for the marketplace as a whole, there was significant action at the very top of the Look for NY-sired NY-breds market. Cartwheelin Lulu, Frosted Ice step Juveniles’ Journey forward in BY PAUL VOLPONI 2-year-old stakes BREEDER/OWNER RODDY VALENTE and co-breeder Dr. Jerry Bilinski must be doing cartwheels to celebrate. Their homebred 2-year-old filly Cartwheelin Lulu ran her race record to two-for-two with a determined front-running score Sept. 19 in the $150,450 Joseph A. Gimma Stakes. The big and rangy daughter of Bustin Stones, out of Repreive, by Successful Ap- peal, began her career with a snappy four-length score against male rivals at Finger Lakes Aug. 16. In making the trek downstate to Belmont Park, however, there ap- peared to be a pair of obstacles Cartwheelin Lulu needed to overcome for trainer Jeremiah Englehart. The first, obviously, was the step up in class. The second was 1 the seven-furlong distance of the Gimma, after the chestnut filly’s 5⁄2-furlong debut. Valente, though, wasn’t overly concerned about the added yardage. “The reason I bred Repreive to Bustin Stones was she went long and Beyered (Beyer Speed Figures) twice in the 90s going two turns,” he said. “With Bustin Stone’s speed, and distance on the bottom, that made it a good fit. “Plus, I love Successful Appeal mares.” Cartwheelin Lulu was also picking up the services of Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez. And that probably made all of the difference. In a race packed with speed on paper, Velazquez seized the front at the break, Catherine Adams-Hutt, breeder from the outermost stall in the field of seven. After an opening quarter-mile of :23.17, and owner of Frosted Ice, with Joel the rider guided his filly over to the rail, which had been kind to speed-types for sev- Rosario aer the Bongard eral previous race days. October 2018 | nytbreeders.org | New York Breeder 33 Peter Brant’s Fiy Five wins the Hettinger by two lengths JOE LABOZZETTA/NYRA Surf and Turf Fifty Five, Black Tide make ‘good’ on the Belmont grass BY TERESA GENARO

ALTHOUGH FIFTY FIVE didn’t have to break the speed limit at Belmont Park Sept. 23, the 4-year-old filly turned in an impressive performance to win the $129,188 John Hettinger Stakes. In her last three races Fifty Five finished third in the Yaddo Stakes for state- breds at Saratoga, beaten a neck and a nose; she won an allowance optional claiming race at Belmont over open company by a neck; and she was second in the May 28 Mount Vernon Stakes for state-breds by a neck. In the Hettinger, at nine furlongs on the turf, she finally got some breathing room. Conquest Hardcandy, Lady Joan, and Feeling Bossy took the early lead on a “good” inner turf course, with Fifty Five racing three-wide while five lengths off the lead. Conquest Hardcandy drew even with Lady Joan, the two of them saun- tering through early fractions of :24.59 and :49.96.

She was purchased privately by Peter Brant on the advice of Alan Quartucci after winning the Flori- da Oaks (G3T) at Tampa Bay Downs in March 2017. “She won a great race there,” said Quartucci, “and she wasn’t for sale, but Mr. Brant pursued her and we got her in the end.” “She’s one of my favorite fillies,” said Brant. “She’s a very feminine, very nice filly.” Fifty Five is out of the Brahms mare Soave and has earned $545,788.
