Penny Dreadfuls and the Gothic Edited Collection Abstracts due: 18 December 2020 Articles due: 30 April 2021 Famed for their scandalous content and supposed pernicious influence on a young readership, it is little wonder why the Victorian penny dreadful was derided by critics and, in many cases, censored or banned. These serialised texts, published between the 1830s until their eventual decline in the 1860s, were enormously popular, particularly with working-class readers. Neglecting these texts from Gothic literary criticism creates a vacuum of working-class Gothic texts which have, in many cases, cultural, literary and socio-political significance. This collection aims to redress this imbalance and critically assess these crucial works of literature. While some of these penny texts (i.e. String of Pearls, Mysteries of London, and Varney the Vampyre to name a few) are popularised and affiliated with the Gothic genre, many penny bloods and dreadfuls are obscured by these more notable texts. As well as these traditional pennys produced by such prolific authors as James Malcolm Rymer, Thomas Peckett Press, and George William MacArthur Reynolds, the objective of this collection is to bring the lesser-researched, and forgotten, texts from neglected authors into scholarly conversation with the Gothic tradition and their mainstream relations. This call for papers requests essays that explore these ephemeral and obscure texts in relevance to the Gothic mode and genre. -

Zawia DEAN OF THE GRADUATE SCHOOL UNIVERSITY OF RHODE ISLAND 2018 Abstract Works of Epic Fantasy often have the reputation of being formulaic, conservative works that simply replicate the same tired story lines and characters over and over. This assumption prevents Epic Fantasy works from achieving wide critical acceptance resulting in an under-analyzed and under-appreciated genre of literature. While some early works do follow the same narrative path as J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, Epic Fantasy has long challenged and reworked these narratives and character tropes. That many works of Epic Fantasy choose replicate the patriarchal structures found in our world is disappointing, but it is not an inherent feature of the genre. -

No No Wave - Film Notes A Selection of Films Produced in New York between 1978-1986 This cultural construction ‘bohemia’ is continuously carbonated by music, film, television, and advertising, window-dressed for sale in cycles of generation and appropriation that, while decades old, have become increasingly sophisticated and entangled, even vivified, with irony. Nonetheless, people still live for this fugitive and often-prostituted ideal, understanding themselves as revolutionaries, criminals, and whores. Bohemia contains real aspiration and real human stories – the raw material of narrative art.1 The short film Not a Warhol Factory by David Blair documents an installation and performance of artist Mike Bidlo, which was presented in 1984 at P.S. 1 in Long Island City, New York. Photocopied or silk-screened Marylins hang on the walls. The rooms themselves are populated with people whose appearance and costumes simultaneously reference the ‘fun-chic’ of the early eighties and the glamour of Warhol's Factory. Bidlo himself strolls through the screen as Warhol; someone else wears a Marilyn Monroe dress. All of those present mimic various roles - revolutionaries, criminals, and whores - from a chapter in the script of the avant-garde, which has already been commercialized and become a part of the canon of art history. Tropes of underground, stardom, art and commerce are played upon here - half in love, half tauntingly, rather foolishly yet with much energy. -

The typical critical move, that is, has been to read such stories meta phorically, as murderous ideation against the raced, classed, and colonized subjects whose extermination is no longer wished for openly but whose dif ference is still _perceived as a dire threat to white middle-class subjectivity in the industrialized West. 1 This is true even of more politically utopian readings of zombie narrative, such as Sarah Juliet Lauro and Karen Embry's widely cited ''A Zombie Manifesto" (2oo8), which accedes to the basic terms of the violence but chooses instead to take the zombies' side, identifying their bru tal destruction of the existing order as a sideways vision of a longed-for revolution. Novels, films, and video games may nominally be about fantastic encounters with zombies (or robots, or orcs, or alien invaders, or sentient apes), the argument goes, but on the more abstract level of ideology they are actually about reproducing and/or critically reexamining cultural narratives about who in real-world society is "killable" and who is not. -

There are no prototypal urban fantasy texts, as each com bination of A Literature of the Unseen roots creates its own set of central works. Second, calling urban fantasy a "sub genre" would not onl y belittle it, it would raise the issue of to what the form wou ld be subordinated: would it be to fant asy, to horro r, to romance, to crime Stefan Ekman fiction , or to any other possible genre? For th ese reasons, I will refer to urban fantasy as a genre in my discu ssion . (l invite readers with strong views on the subject to read "subgen re" where it says "genre" below.) Determining what specific date or writer marks the appearance of a par ticu lar type of literature is always fraught with difficulties and entails a certa in amount of arbitra riness. The beginnings of urban fantasy have been assigned to various points in time and con nected to different origin ators. In his entry in T he Encyclopedia of Fantasy (1997), John Clute traces the history of urban fantasy from the edifices of Horace Walpole's The Castle of Otranto (1764) to contempo rary urban fantasists. It is proved that symbols have always been deeply investigated in Poetics and Text Linguistics; they play an important role in any text; both in ancient and in modern texts many colour, number, animal or graphical images can be found as different symbols.It’s also defined that universal symbols are easily recognizable and that’s why remain in the reader’s memory. Writers often use symbolic images in their literary works, sometimes very overtly, sometime more implicitly. The article also focuses on the fact that S. King uses plenty of symbols and word images to convey some important messages for his readers, to scare them even more or to tell a story of his life. Some examples of these symbols like special animals, colours, numbers, graphical images are discussed in our research. The author states that one of the key themes of his works is the motif of alcoholism or the strength of addiction which can be presented by many symbols, for example the dog’s rabies.
