SUMMERLIN BY DERICK CORDOBA DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fuLfiLLment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts in Music with a concentration in Jazz Performance in the Graduate CoLLege of the University of IlLinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2017 Urbana, IlLinois Doctoral Committee: Associate Professor Lawrence Gray, Chair Professor GabrieL SoLis, Director of Research Associate Professor Tito CarriLLo Professor Erik Lund ABSTRACT This dissertation discusses the Lineage of Liturgical jazz with a particuLar focus on Edgar Eugene “Ed” SummerLin (1928-2006). This Lineage stretches back into the Late 1950s, but has LargeLy been unexplored beyond a seLect few high-profiLe artists. I trace the evoLution of Liturgical jazz from several composers’ earLiest attempts to the present day. ALthough the Liturgical jazz movement began in the Late 1950s, it was primariLy a product of the turbuLent 1960s in America. This was a period of great change and expLoration not onLy in jazz but in organized reLigion as weLL. A deep and frank discussion emerged as to what Liturgical music shouLd and wouLd be alLowed to sound Like. These decisions at the highest LeveLs of denominations had ramifications that are stiLL being feLt today in the churches of America; however, the primary focus of this dissertation is on the formative period of Liturgical jazz during the 1960s and earLy 1970s. These years give a basis for better understanding and appreciating the deveLopment and defining features of Liturgical jazz. SummerLin is a figure that is often cited as a pioneer in Liturgical jazz, but no one has offered a history of his Life, his music, or why his Liturgical music was so revoLutionary.

THE MOSLEY STREET SUITE A THIRD STREAM CHAMBER WORK FOR SIX PLAYERS JAMES PETER BROWN A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS GRADUATE PROGRAM IN MUSIC YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO JUNE, 2019 © JAMES PETER BROWN, 2019 Abstract In 1957 Gunther Schuller coined the term Third Stream as a description of a developing trend wherein elements of jazz and 20th century art music were being combined, creating a new body of compositions, performances and recordings by a diverse community of musicians. This thesis presents an original composition entitled The Mosley Street Suite, demonstrating some of the trends of third stream music and consisting four movements entitled: "Song Within The Story”, “Paper Air Plane”, “Chalet Music” and “Mbira Kids.” A brief overview of third stream music from its inception in 1957 to the present day is included, as well as a discussion of some of the musical techniques and styles that embody third stream, citing examples from a variety of composers, arrangers and performers. A final section of this thesis contains a detailed description of the methodology and score of The Mosley Street Suite. !ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to thank Professors Al Henderson and Dr. Mark Chambers for their guidance and assistance. I would also like to thank my parents for supporting my musical journey from the very beginning and my children for inspiring my creative spirit. • VIII. Jazz Concertos, Cool Jazz, Modern 1954-1962
VIII: Jazz Concertos, Cool Jazz and Modern (1954-1962) As the year of 1954 began, most people probably didn’t have a clue that this would become, in the long view of history, the demarcation line between the rock ‘n’ roll era and “everything else” in the history of popular and jazz music. The handwriting had been on the wall for some time anyway; with the exception of the Dorsey Brothers, who hated bop and refused to play it, nearly every other jazz musician of the time, even Count Basie and Benny Goodman, had a flirtation with it and some went into it full tilt. And then after bop came “modern jazz,” an umbrella term that seemed to cover everything from Monk, Mingus and the Brubeck Octet to Miles Davis, the MJQ and Sauter-Finegan. White middle-class America re- treated into the easy-to-understand music of pop singers like Frank Sinatra, Nat Cole, Dinah Shore, Perry Como, Doris Day and Patti Page; black America gravitated towards R&B. For some there was also country and western, but with the exceptions of Hank Williams and Eddy Arnold, these performers seldom crossed over into the mainstream hit parade. But 1954 brought Bill Haley’s Rock Around the Clock, and even though it really didn’t become a huge hit until it was featured in the movie Blackboard Jungle the following year, it made a convenient demarcation line between older-styled pop music and the new breed. Of course there had to be a precedent that would allow a record like this to find its way into the pop market, and that pivotal disc was Billy Ward and the Dominoes’ Sixty Minute Man (1951), which not only made it to #1 on the R&B charts but, more surprisingly for a disc of such music at that time, made it to #17 on the Billboard Hot 100, normally the arbiter of white America’s music.

The Adaptation of Saxophone-Like Phrasing into the Improvisatory and Compositional Vocabulary of Jazz Guitar: A Comparative Analysis of Phrasing, Articulation, and Melodic Design in the Styles of Jimmy Raney, Jim Hall, and John Scofield. Doctor of Musical Arts (Performance), May 2020, 195 pp., 11 tables, 15 figures, 92 musical examples, 1 appendix, bibliography, 50 titles, discography, 8 titles. This study investigates how different guitarists introduced saxophone-like phrasing into the improvisatory and compositional vocabulary of jazz guitar through their collaborations with saxophonists. This research presents a comparative analysis of phrasing, articulation, and melodic design in solo improvisations. The mixed approach to this study includes analysis of motives, voice leading, articulation, length of phrases, melodic contour, and the execution of bebop vocabulary on the guitar. The findings are based on original transcriptions from significant recordings by guitar-saxophone pairs. These highlight the similarities between and adaptations of musical devices from saxophonists Stan Getz, Jimmy Giuffre, and Joe Lovano into the jazz guitar styles of Jimmy Raney, Jim Hall, and John Scofield.
