University of Rijeka Madam Universities are the confluence of the most educated Rector people in society, scientists and artists who devote their life experiments to incessant research for the everyday benefit of society. However, we have never been exposed to such movements that disprove or relativize science in favour of pseudo - scientific and dogmatic ideologies, and which are falsely represented as critical or pluralistic. It is not necessary to mystify or romanticise the role of universities and their research, but it is certainly necessary to oppose the nameless and unreasoned culture of ignorance that questions the importance of universities and the sciences. We must never lose sight of Goethe's words: 'There is nothing more frightening than ignorance in action.' I deeply believe that there is no alternative to science and scientific research. There will be no hope for us should we falter in our belief in the value of education and science, and in the public good that only education and science can bring. If we stop believing, we will lose our greatest fortune in these times of crisis. Disagreement and diversity are an inseparable part of science, and failure is often as important as success. All of us should consider these thoughts chosen from Marcus Aurelius’ 'Meditations'. 'Let us try to be focused on what is ahead of us every minute, with the right fortitude, the will to do good and to be just. Let us not assume that something is impossible if it seems difficult. We can do anything and everything that is not humanly impossible. Should we be warned that we are wrong because we made a mistake or we have a wrong perspective, we should change our attitude. Truth cannot do any harm to anyone, but persistence in self - deception and ignorance can.' 007 228 PROJECTS 008 UNIRI projects UNIRI PROJECTS represent a system of tendering process allowed a convergence fundamental institutional funding of of the institutional terminology in line the University of Rijeka’s research with the valid acts of the University and activities, conducted on a competitive ensured the implementation of a system basis, through the tendering process, of scientific visibility for project and with external independent scientific managers and associates in international evaluation. • A Unique Type of Archaic Oral Poetry
Oral Tradition, 6/2 3 (1991): 200-224 Bugaršćice: A Unique Type of Archaic Oral Poetry Josip Kekez Historical and Geographical Defi nition In the context of oral literature, bugaršćice1 represent an important and unique genre in many respects. They are, among other things, striking proof that oral literature is not simply a discovery of the nineteenth century—as was long maintained in South Slavic regions—and that two literatures, oral and written, were in contact from the earliest times in a number of ways, including the manner of their recording and study. On the other hand, we would know nothing of the genre in question and its aesthetic values if interest in oral literature had not existed from the beginning; many passages in the early literature of Croatia would have forever remained obscure, while Croatian poetry of the present day would have assumed a different profi le. Scholars have not so far taken suffi cient account of the fact that the poetic system of the bugaršćica is distinctly indigenous and in many of its features remote from other verse forms of oral literature; nor is there evidence that it existed at any time or in any national community or setting other than those discussed below. Apart from one or two examples, all bugaršćice have been recorded on the eastern Adriatic strip from Istria in the north to the Gulf of Kotor in the south, so that they are geographically strictly defi ned. One poem was recorded on the western side of the Adriatic, in southern Italy, but it was sung in their own language by settlers from the eastern side of the Adriatic.

They arrived in an organized manner to the eastern Adriatic coast and the re- gion bordered by the Drina, Drava and Danube rivers in the first half of the seventh century, during the time of major Avar-Byzan- tine Wars and general upheavals in Europe. In the territory where they settled, they organized During the reign of Prince themselves into three political entities, based on the previ Branimir, Pope John VIII, ous Roman administrative organizations: White (western) the universal authority at Croatia, commonly referred to as Dalmatian Croatia, and Red the time, granted (southern) Croatia, both of which were under Byzantine su Croatia international premacy, and Pannonian Croatia, which was under Avar su recognition. premacy. MENTAL MAPS IN THE SERB-CATHOLIC IMAGINATION IN DUBROVNIK Abstract This article describes the experience of the community of Serb-Catholics living in Dubrovnik in the early twentieth century. It is based primarily on an investigation of the literary and cultural periodical Srdj (1902–08). This study focuses, fi rstly, on the conceptual ambivalence resulting from efforts to apply linguistic criteria to determine Serbian identity and, secondly, on the efforts to construct a mental map that would serve projections of Serbian symbolic territory. While the presence of the Serb-Catholic milieu in the city was short-lived (from the mid-nineteenth century to the First World War), it nevertheless left traces on the urban landscape that typifi ed the ambivalent formation of national identity along religious lines, as Croatians were associated with Catholicism and Serbs with Orthodoxy. Keywords: Serb-Catholics, Dubrovnik, Dalmatia, nation-building, Serbia, Habsburg monarchy I INTRODUCTION A glance at the map of the Habsburg Monarchy following the Aus- tro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867 reveals emphatically just how peripheral a place Dalmatia (offi cially the Kingdom of Dalmatia) had in the Empire. Dubrovnik had an even less important position. This once wealthy commune that had competed with Venice in terms of status was now located at the periphery of a periphery, squeezed into a narrow isthmus between the Adriatic and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Owing to its exceptionally rich culture – which is evident both in the cultural landscape (architecture) and in writing (in documents from the past and in literature) – Croatians and Serbians alike, as well as Italians http://dx.doi.org/10.12775/APH.2020.121.07 144 Maciej Czerwiński in some sense, have staked claims to Dubrovnik.

  • Count Ivan Anž Frankopan, the Royal Steward of the Estate in Sweden 1426 - 1434
COUNT IVAN ANŽ FRANKOPAN, THE ROYAL STEWARD OF THE ESTATE IN SWEDEN 1426 - 1434 Mladen Ibler Within the framework of medieval history of Europe and its own geostrategic location, Scandinavian royalties and nobility entertained contacts with central and western Europe. Less known however, is the relationship between Eric of Pomerania, the King of the three Scandinavian realms and the Croatian nobility of Frankopans. This paper attempts to provide the short description of the conditions in Croatia and Scandinavia at the beginning of XV century, the relationship between Eric of Pommerania and count Ivan Anž Frankopan, and the role of the Republic of Dubrovnik (Ragusa) during King Eric’s travel on his way to the Holy Land 1424-5. Based on Dubrovnik, Budapest, Vatican, and Scandinavian sources, a special emphasis is beeing given to the events surrounding Ivan Anž Frankopan’s visit to Sweden. In Venetian and Scandinavian sources, he is reffered to under the name of Gian Franchi and Johan Franke. Due to this reason, historians have been unaware of the real identity of King Eric’s steward of the estate (fief) Stegeborg in Sweden 1426-34, count Ivan Anž Frankopan. Key words: Frankopan, Ivan Anž; the King Eric of Pommerania; Stegeborg; Kalmar Union I. The Kingdom of Croatia, Dalmatia and Slavonia has been in personal union with Kingdom of Hungary since 1102. Its main parts, Dalmatia and Croatia were governed by a viceroy (Ban), and Slavonia, as the third part, was governed by its own viceroy. In the beginning of the fifteenth century the Kingdom was the object of fight between King Ladislas of Naples and his rival Sigismund of Luxemburg.

  • Kvarner Fact-Sheet
KVARNER FACT -SHEET Various information brochures can be obtained from Croatian tourism offices free of charge. More information about the Kvarner region is available at www.kvarner.hr . IN SHORT The Kvarner tourist region includes some of Croatia's most diverse natural landscapes: coast, islands and highlands. The name Kvarner comes from the Latin word Quaternarius meaning "four cardinal points". Thanks to the favourable climate on the coast, winter health tourism started developing as early as 1880, later shifting to the summer months. GEOGRAPHY The Kvarner region connects the Istrian peninsula in the west with the Croatian Littoral in the east, and includes the Gorski kotar highlands and the Primorje littoral. This is where Central Europe turns into the Mediterranean. The harsh hill country with its fortresses, castles and baroque churches flows into a Mediterranean landscape with fashionable coastal towns, harbours, beaches, islands and stone houses. CULTURAL HISTORY Thanks to its sheltered and appealing geographic location, Kvarner Bay has always attracted the interest of settlers and invaders. As early as 1200 BC, the Illyrian tribe of Liburnians settled on the Kvarner coast and traded in amber. The remains of the walls of their hill forts are still visible today. They were followed by the Greeks, Romans, Ostrogoths, Slavs, Franks, Byzantines, Hungarians, Venetians and Austrians. These all left indelible traces of their civilisations. Today, the Kvarner region has 278 protected cultural monuments, including 177 historical zones and 161 buildings and complexes. Interested visitors can read the history of the region from these monuments as if from a book. CLIMATE Kvarner Bay has one of the mildest climates in the Adriatic.

Međimurje je 1720. stvarno i pravno pripojeno županiji Zala, dakle Mađarskoj. Tako ostaje punih dvjesto godina (do Trianonske konferencije 1920.), s kraćom neuspjelom Jelačićevom epizodom (1848. – 1861.) pripojenja toga kraja Hrvatskoj.
